It is when tli, writer of the letter proceeds to confess that"a:l the attempts made to promote Liberal thought and education in th( I wiuoiD e j oi Liberalism have bien dismal failures that his communication becomes doubly interesting. After referring to the disgraceful abandonment of the local Parliamentary Society by the Liberal party, Mr. Perkins goes on: — "A well known Nonconformist minister vehemently attacked the Conservative can- didate while occupying his place as chair- man of the Board of Guard;ans, upon a question of ruling, in which Sir J. T. D. Llewelyn was perfectly right. The veriest tyro in politics should have known that such an outrage was exactly the way to benefit Sir J. Llewelyn's candidature and secure him votes and general support. During the contest men appeared upon the Liberal platform who are never seen at times when steady work (but unknown to the general public) is needed. 2\Lmy persons, to my knowledge, were dis- gusted at the buffoonery shown upon the platform at some of the Liberal meetings. ihsy wanted to hear, they said, good plain reasons why they should vote for Mr. Burnie, and not the sort of thing that they could hear far better at the Empire. Most injurious also is it to & cause when personalities are indulged in. Especially is this the case when tho attacked party is a gentleman whose local connection and general character inspires tespect throughout the constituency and while we cannot concede that Mr. Perkins has discovered and stated the causes of the recent defeat of the local Liberal party, we believe he has touched two or three weak spots in their armour. The Americans have been pleased to compliment Lord Dunraven Oil the appear- ance of Valkyrie III., and, judging from the reports sent over here, they aio some- ivhau tiiiaid for the destiny of the famous trophy for which the coming yacht race Will be sailed. Both contesting boats are new ones, the Valkyrie having been designed tobri.ig back the Arncrica Cup to this side again if possible, and the Defender tJ keep it in the Sbte. We hope the contest will be fought out to the finish with the sportsmanlike feeling that has greeted the advent of the English boat, but we must bear in mind the passion to retain possession of the cup "which exists among all classes on the other side of the silvet streak." In the interests of genuine spore it would be as well if we could bring the cup home again, but whether this will be done or not a noble I effort is to bo made, and our cousins do not appear to be in the most comfortable frame of mind with regard to the encounter. Football prospects in West Wales appear to be hopeful in the extreme. After a couple of years of mediocrity footballers in st Wales woke up last season to iind themselves possessed of young blood that was fit fur anything. Six young Westerners received their International caps, and others gave promise of fnture usefulness. those young players who did such ftp etuiid service last season for Swansea and Llanelly are again available—sturdier, stouter, with bone and muscle more fnlly developed than was the case last year. In the East it ia unfortunately not so. There is no greater authority on football in South Eastern Wales than Mr. A. J. (Luld, and be gave it as his pronounced « p'nion towards the end of last season that in Newport at any rate their salvation depended mostly upon "old crocks." Among their youhger plajors they had none who gavepromijeof more than average ability. It would appear then that there a prospect of West Walians again asserting that superiority on the football held that was their proud boast in days of yore, for so far as Wales ia concerned was it not in Llanelly that Rugby football was conceived and in Swansea that it was weaned ?

Anthony had been settled out of court, and we learn that the terms of settlement are as follows:—The plaintiff agreed to withdraw the action, and to pay defendants costs, subject to the hedge in question being the property of the plaintiff, but if the growth of the hedge becomes over 2ft. high the defendant is to be at liberty to reduce it to that height.
