GAS MOTOR XKAMCARS.I
GAS MOTOR XKAMCARS. ANOTHER RIVAL TO ELECTRICITY I To Blackpool, the flourishing Lancashire I resort of the Midland and NortM-eoontry excursionist, and tbo adjoining smallor t.@ of St. Anne's and Lytba*, belongs the hopour i of being the first- to utilise in England a system or traction which seems very likely to meet with widespread aeoeptanee for street ears. The question of sootors for these Tehie'ss, aDd f-, (" all horselesseamages. <tiU—though on the ere, it in to be hoped, of legislation—remains to be settled. The electric cars. needing expeesire installations and either overhead or underground wires, both of them objectionable; the cable ears wkich bare shown a teodeney to go wrong, and the unsightly and coisosse steam tram all of them leave mucb to be disired. The Blackpool, Su Anne's, and Lyihaai Tramway Company has laid and equipped a line on the principles which the Gas Traetion Company of London and Dresden is hovt iutredaeing. The inventor of the system, which liatAs from 1393, was the late Herr Luhrig, of Dresden. Owing te the expense of horse traetion in the Fatberland, and also to many rsfietieaw enforced by the Government, the tramways there have not in many oase,. been successful financially. In attempting to bring abent an eeonosay wbieh should produce the "divine dividend," which is probably ae effective a spur to human progress as "divine discontent," Merr Luhrig devised a means et connecting a gas m*tor aDd tbe gear of a ear by a set of friction elulehes, which allows the engine to run eon- tinuously, while the car can be stepped and completely controlled by the driver's levers. Herr Luhril made use of the well-known OUO type of gas ensine; ic faet, his invention consisted in the combination of several famfliar deviees, and ears worked according to his plan, wilkk »ub«equent improvements, have .eon running with success for two years, and for nearly so long at Dessau. It » experienee-that the^ias Traetion Company is enabled to-give figures, whicb, to sbueholder. in English, tramway eempaniss, wili pro" of great inwwott, Taking gas at 2e 6d per 1,000 eubic feet, tbe^oat per ear mile in Dresden is 1.23d, ;n Deeaaa 0.9d, the difference boins accounted for by tbe fast that tbe Dessau line ie slightly easier in gradients. Relative changes for every expense, exeept that of madntainiag tbe permanent way, are.; found to be m-Germany. For horse traction, i Sid per mile; eieetne traction, 3-td; gas j traction, 2id,J I

ASSURANCE AGENTS' PICNIC. The Swansea and Carmarthen representa- tives of the London, Edinburgh and Glaseow Asauranee Company, together with ssveral visitors, including Mr C. Weeding Skinner, deputy chairman ef the eompany, Mr W. .Abraham, M.P. (Mahon^, and Mr John Blee. cC Bristol, held their annual outing at the Gower Inn, Parkmill, yesterday, whither to the number of over 100 they were conveyed in a coach and breaks supplied by Mr Roster. An excellent dinner and tea was plaeed upon the tables by Host Morris in one of Ford's large marquees, to whieb, after a long dusty drive, all did ample justice. After dinner the usual loyal and patriotic toasts being disposed of, the Deputy-chairman addressed tbose present, stating that he bad just completed a tour of visit to every district of the company in England, Wales, and Scotland, and having experienced that the sort of representatives we company requires are men at business, of character, of courage, and determination, ho spoke of the iiipfa moral character of their work in encouraging thrift ameog the working elasses, and urged upon them te maintain and increase the very I encouraging returns of tll. present year and to reeovor the position which jfo. 3 formerly held (before the stoppage of so many worts) as the leading district in tha United Kingdom. — Mr W. Abraham (Maboii), M.P., followed with one of his characteristic speeches, sparkling with nit, good bumeur, and good advice everywhere interwoven, and claiming for life assuranee that it is a part-aad a very essential part— of the religion of the poor.—Mr Thos. Neill, general manager, stated that the Increase in the collections in the Industrial Branch in the first haif of 1896 are £ 10,000 is excess I of a similar period of 1895.—Mr John I Sloe aiss gave much good advice, and pre- sented silk umbrellas to Mr Hughes of Car- marthen, and Mr Samuel, Neath, for talking the highest returns in their respective dis- tricts over a given period, Mr Watkins the genial local manager, who appears to be Verv popular with the men, also spoke very briefly, and a few words from Messrs 'Chapman, For, Hughes, Samuels Matthews and Uses brought a rather lengthy meeting to a close. After tea. bad been partaken of .Mr Chapman photographed the agents in grocp, and scon afterwards the home journey was taken, everybody being satisfied vnth a most onjoyablo outing, and filled with enough good advice to last the •rm*<HU<ttr nac..ral life, if not longer,
