-----------Merthyr School…
Merthyr School Board. The ordinary meeting of the Merthyr School Board was held on Friday, Mr. W. L. Daniel, chair- man, presiding. The School Management Com- mittee reported that on the 10th inst. they had before them a copy of a report intended for pre- sentation to the Local Board of Health, in which Dr. Dyke, the medical oi5.cer, suggested that all the schools of this board should be closed from the 17th inst. to the 3rd of January owing to the con- tinued prevalence of scarlet fever. The committee, therefore, recommended that the schools be closed during that period.—The Chairman remarked that this closure meant a loss of scores and scores of pounds in salaries. Representations had been made to him already with regard to the enormous amount of money the board w«?re draw- ing from poor-rate. They had received during jhis year £ 5.000, and they would require £500 joore before tiie er.d of March. Upon the out- jreak of the least epidemic of measies or anything, they were asked to close the schools, and, as the salaries amounted to about €1,500 a quarter, it was a verv serious matter. — The Clerk read Clause 98 of the code. which provided that managers must comply with any notice of the Sanitary Authority requiring them, with a view to preventing the spread of disease, to close the schools for a specified time In repty to the Chairman, the Clerk said no such notice had been received, only a communica- tion from Dr. Dyke.—The Rev. ReesEvansexplained that the committee thought it would be better to do voluntarily what the doctor advised rather than wait for it to he enforced upon them.—The Chair-nan said lie, -wished to give every support to the Sanitary Authority, bu' ha did not like the board to take .:r,j Ilietrseiv" the responsibility of saying when .,0 grave a step as the closing of the schools "Louid be taken. Notwithstanding that they had not received the prescribed notice, thev were prcDOsing to give an extra week's holiday at Christmas, and what it really meant wag a sixth of £ 1,500. He had no doubt Dr. Dyke was anxious to take time by She forelock, but he had privately pointed Jut to l'irl that lie hoped be would never recommend the shutting up of the whole of the schools without fully considering the immense loss Mvhich it entailed upon the parish.—After some dis- cussion the report w-<s adopted.—A letter was read from Mr. Beriah Gwyni'e Evans, secretary of the Society for the Utilisation of the WeJsh Language, I enclosing certain information calculated to assist the board in preparing a scheme for the teaching of Welsh as a specific subject, in the schools. The dan- gerous ingredient in all soothing medicines is the opium or morphia which they contain, but from which STEDMAN'S TEETHING POWDERS are entirely free, as witness Dr. Hassall's certifi- cate. Hence, for the welfare and safety of the child, purchasers should insist on seeing the Registered Trade Mark, a Gum Lancet, on every single powder and packet, and should refuse to have others imposed upon them. STEDMAN'S TEETHING POWDERS The Analytical Institution, 54, Holborn Viaduct, E.C., London, November 29,1877. Report on the Teething Powder prepared by Dr. btedman, Hoxtori -.— "I hereby certify that I have purchased a sample of Stedman's Teething Po Yder. and have, at the request of the proprietor, subjected it to analysis for Morphia or Opium in any form. I am enabled to state that I found the sample in question to be absolutely free from Morphia or any other alkaloid or constituent of Opium. "Thus Stedman's Teething Powder is favourably distinguished from similar preparations. ARTHUR H. H ASS ALL, M.D." I — — .J TESTIMONIAL FROM Mrs. HUGHES Rossall School, Lancashire.
