A Welsh University.
A Welsh University. The Subject Discussed by the Cambrian Society. Thst Cambrian Society met, at the Town-hall on vVYdnesuay evening, Professor Roberts presiding, to litn to and consider a paper read by Principal lirÎamu June, on the subject of a Welsh Univer- pity The latter. Princinal Jones said, was needed to give unity and consolidation of results to Welsh educational effurt. The functions of a University f were (1\ to teach, (2) to examine and to Confer degree', -3) t) cuide the Intermediate Education of th <)untry. and 4) to encourage original investigation in aJl branches. Dealing with these separate heads, he said the University <hou!d b. responsible for the good teaching of every graduate as well as for examining him, and care should be taken to avoid that mental dis-1 turbance of the mental digestion commonly called cramming. In t hig COil nee; ion it was shown that LOfHion University was merely an examining University. In his opinion teaching should be an I Ssential feature cf the Welsh University. As a tentative suggestion, the following faculties might 9 established, viz.Arts, Science, Engineering,! •>iv:nity, Law, and Medicine. But it would not be Scessary or desirable that every College in the mv^rsity should teach in every faculty This Knecue gave them the means of embracing in the University every institution in Wales properly equipped for collegiate work in one or more of ttio iacuHies. Passing on to the subject of the! nature Ci examinations. Principal Jones advocated the maintenance cf distinctions between pass and honours examinations, and asked whether'it would nrx bo possible to have an undenominational theological examination, admitting, however, that • he ddhculties to carrying it out, might prove insurmountable. After dealing with the govern- ment of the proposed University, the Principal invited discussion on these points;—(l) Whether the University was Lo be a teaching University; (2) how far the professors were to be also exami- iters; (3) tho position of the Theological College | the conferring of theological degrees; (4) the relation of tho University to Intermediate Kduca- tion. It was time to take action. The Interme-j diuto Education Bill had been so long delayed that they had a right to as!: for an University charter at tl." same time. Tha CHAIRMAN reviewed at some length the scheme propounded by Principal Jones, and said that, what they required in Wales were discipline and training. The resources of the Welsh people had not yet been called into play they had not; yet been disciplined. There had been schools and Colleges and individual efforts, but there had also been a lamentable absence of co-operation. Mr. 1 uooii EVAS commended the main outlines of tb", paper, which, he said, re-paid him for a11 his efforts during the year. Mr. Lewis WILUAMS declared that be had been afraid of the financial difficulty, which it would now seem had no existence. Mr. Ivos Jami-S urged that the Government should be compelled to give effect to the recom- mendations of the Education Commission. Mr. THOCNCK also spoke, declaring himself to be in thorough agreement with the substance of Principal Jones's argument. Principal JONKS proposed, and Mr. LEWIS: WILLIAMS seconded, th« following resolution, winch was adopted nem. con., viz.:— That the Cambrian Soeiel v of Sotuh Wales and Mon- iiiouthjl.ire desires 10 pre5' upon the attention of tbe Oovernment ana of the Kdncution Sub-committee of Wt-laU mmoors of Parliament the importance of o- ciatinj; the estubhsliment of rhe Welsh t: tiiversity with tht: passage of the rllermediate Education Bill through tarliamenc. 1: was further decided to send copies of the resolution to all the councils and senates of the' Welsh Colleges, in order that a scheme of com- bined action might be undertaken by them with a I view ot forwarding the establishment of the I niversity, and also to forward copies to every newspaper in Wales and Monmouthshire. Votes of thanks to Principal Jones and the chairman ter- j minated the proceedings. )

We have much pleasure in announcing that the pub- lication of a New Series of Short Steries by highly ponular Authors is this week commenced in the WEEKLY MAIL" The Authors will be at once recognised as Novelist holding high rank among the best and most deservedly popular writers of Fiction. Their names are :— D. CHRISTIE MURRAY, MRS. ALEXANDER, B. L. FARJEON, THE AUTHOR OF "MOLLY BAWN," AND THOMAS HARDY. Each of these five Authors lias well-known charac- teristics, developed in choice of subject and scene, nature of plot and style of treatment, and all will be reconised as Authors of powerful Stories, which have left their impress upou a constituency extensive as the reading world. Their works bave made US acquainted ".ith some of the most charming conceptions of the Domestic circle, some of the most thrilling sensations in Colonial adventure, and some of tbe most exquisite aspects of English rural life and character. We can most confidently recommend the Series as one which will afford to readers of Fiction a source of unbounded pleasure. No. 1. THE QUEEN'S SCARF, BY JJAVID QHRISTIE MURRAY, AUTHOR OF "First Person Singular," "Joseph's Coat," t6 The Way of the World," "Rainbow Gold," "Aunt Rachel," &c. The Author develops, in an intensely interesting and fascinating style, the Story of a young genius who raised himself from the gutter to become ultimately a distinguished Professor, and of how the eminent scientist comported himself when caught in the toils of lorn. Graphic and brilliant," says the Morning Post, of Mr. Ifurrav's work." Yields an abundant harvest of excite- ment," St. James's Gtutttc.observes; A vivid delineator otcosmopolitan life," remarks the New York Evening Post Few living novelists equal Mr. Murray," in the opinion of the Glasgow Herald; and "All Christie Murray writes is wholesome. Interesting, and worth reading," the Lyttleton Times (New Zealand) says-all of which eulogies, aud others, will find ample justi- fication in the Story by Mr. Murray now announced for publication in our columns. No. 2. The Second of the Series is by MRS. ALE X AND E R, Author of The Wooing The Admiral's Ward," Her Dearest Foe," Ralph Wilton's Ward." At Bay," &c. THE TITLE OF THE STORY 19 FORGING THE FETTERS. The hero is an Anglo-Indian soldier, who rises to dis- tinction, and the heroine a gifted lady of striking characteristics; and their lives, in union, in disunion, and in re-union, yield a story of all-absorbing interest, "A genuine plot," says the Saturday Review of one of her stories bright and deeply interesting," exclaims the Morning Post; thoroughly good," the Gulignani adds; and tue New York Telegram pays the Author the compliment of saying Mrs. Alexander seems to possess naturally the art of telling a story." We predict that our readers will fully endorse these opinions after perusing the new Story she haS written for publication in our columns, entitled Forging the Fetters." No. 3, The Third of the Series is by B.L.FAKJE0N- "Author of Christmas Angel," Joshua Marvel," At the Sign of the Silver Flagon," Bread and Cheese and Kisses," "The Great Porter-square Mystery," "The Sacred Nugget," Ac. )(1". Far j eon's past work is a sufficient assurance that the new Story on which be is now engaged will be a charm- ing and brilliant production. His plots are always god, his characters well-drawn, his incidents fresh, his style attractive, and his tone elevating, By his realism," the Athenaum says, Mr. iarjeon proclaims himself the last and best of a long line of story tellers descended through Mr. Wilkie Collins from Defoe." The Times says Farjeon is equally at home in depicting the emotional anù the prautioal aspects of existence." Tht British Quarterly Review esteems him "a preacher of the brotherhood of rich and poor, more powerful, graphic, and tender than any si noe Dickens while the Freeman's Journal ranks him with the lights bf literature-Fielding, Scott, and Dickens.' No. 4. The Fourth of the Series is by the author of "MOLLY jjawn->' Airy, Fairy Lillian," Doris," Phyllis," A Maiden All Forlorn," Rossmoyne," Lady Branksmere," &c. Touches of nature abound in every page," the Queen says of her work; Light, pleasant, and bright," is Truth's eulogy; Full of wit, spirit and gaiety," the Atheneeum remarks; containing "abundance of quaint, quiet, and playful humour," according to Vanity fair; and possessing, adds the Academy, a rare combination of wit, humour, and good sense." No, 6. The Fifth and Concluding Novel of the Series is by rp H O M A S JJARDY. Author of Far from the Madding Crowd," Laodi- cean," "Pair of Blue Eyes." "Under the Greenwood Tree," "The Mayor of Casterbridge," The Wood landers," Ac. Language could hardly be found to express higher praise than has been bestowed upon Mr. Hardy's work. That excellent authority on literary merit, the Athen- ian, regards him as in some respects probably the best of our living Novelists." "Those capable of admiring real Fictional art," the Court and Society Review says, will turn to these volumes (' Mayor of Casterbridge') again and again, and find new delight in every page." The Pall Mail Gazette affirms that" Time spent in read- ing Mr. Hardy is never mis-spent." The Dublin Review praises his "dramatic power," and the New York Tribune his fresh and vivid pictures of English rural life." We have the most sincere pleasure and the highest confidence in announcing a Series of Stories by writers so distinguished and so popular; and we bespeak the kindly interest of present Subscribers in widening the circle of our Readers by drawing the attention of their I friends to these announcements.
