Q3 f amùrgmtia CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS THE HISTORY OF GWENT AND MORGANWG. (Continued ft on the Merlin of Jan. 1 st.) We observe next that churches had become pretty numerous indeed a very large number of the present churches of Wales had been founded as early as the sixth and seventh century. But though the churches were numerous, they were but small and of rude mate- rials-the dimensions of the cathedral of Llandaff, as given in the Liber Landavensis, as it stood up to the year 1120, will oone as an example. It is thus described by Bishop Urban:—28 feet in length, 15 in width, 20 in height, with two aisles, one on each side, of very small size and height, and a porch of the round form, 12 feet in length and 12 feet in breadth. Very probably the earlier Christians performed their worship within their ancient temples the Druidical circles- as the author of the Introduction to "Llywarch Hên" observes; and the fact that some of these circles retain still some Christian names is favourable to this supposition, as Carn Moesen," in Glamorganshire," Cam y Groes," on the mountain of Gellionen, Ty Illtyd," in Breck- nockshire, &c. This also may explain the cross in- scribed upon several of the old Druidical stones. But, as we have noticed, some kind of ecclesiastical structure became prevalent in the fourth and fifth century. Superstition also was extending her sway and her gloom over the Eiitish church. Old bones were coming to importance, miracles were performed, and we are told that the sentence of excommunication pronounced by Bishop Berthgwyn against the King was attended with making bare the altars of God, laying the crosses on the ground, inver.ing the bells, and forbidding baptism and communion to his adherents." The Church, in the .hands of her bishops, had become a great power, border- ing upon the supreme* and it served as a counter- balancing force to check the tyranny of kings, and the anarchy of the people. We have examples in the Liber Landavensis of kings and people interdicted fear- lessly, in their turn, for breach of justice and good neighbourhood. Order and liberty gravitated in the Church. 16. Trychan hccame the Bishop of Llandaff at the time of Ithel, King of Glamorgan and Glewysig, and died in the reign of his son. He was Bishop A.D. 620. 17. Edilfyw comes next to Trychan, according to the dates of grants in Liber Landavensis. It is probable that he died about the middle of this century, leaving only his name behind, preserved on old parchments. 18. Greciells. Meurig, son of Ithael ap Morgan, was King of Glamorganshire, in the time of this Bishop, I which must have been late in the seventh or early in the eighth century, when Ifor ap Alan possessed the nominal sovereignty of Wales. Gwylffer and Cynfyn, sons of Gwrgan and Bairns, are among the donors to Llandaff when Grecielis was Bishop. 19. Aidan. Although no mention is made of such a prelate in the Liber Landavensis, he is here inserted on the authority of the Welsh Chronicle, which states that during an incursion of the Saxons into the Principality in 720, the churches of Llandaff were pillaged, and Aidan, its Bishop, together with several of his clergy, killed. Rhodii Molwynog was sovereign of Wales at that time. 20. Elwog was Bishop of Llandaff in the time of Meurig Ffernwael, Rhys, and Rhodri, sons of Ithael, King of Glewysig. 21. Cerenhir was Bishop in the time of Meurig, son of Ithael, and his son, Brochwael, Kings of Glamorgan, and of Hywel, the son of Rhys ab Ithel, King of Glewysig. 22. Nudd, in whose time Meurig ab Ithael, and his sons, Ffernwael and Brochwael. were Kings of Glamor- gan, and Hywel, son of Rhys, King of Glewysig and also Tewdwr, sen of Elised, King of Brecknock. 23. Cadwared. The Kings of the district, during the time of this prelate, were Ffernwael, son of Ithael, his brothers Rhys and Rhodri, and his sons, Athrwys and Gwrgafran. The name of Cadwared appears as a witness to grants in the time of Bishop Cerenhir. 24 Nobis, or Xywys, of whom nothing important is recorded. 25. Cyfeliawg, consecrated by Ethelred, Archbishop of Canterbury, 872 taken prisoner by the Danes, and ransomed by King Edward (the Elder), 915 died, 927. Brochwael, son of Meurig, Hywel, son of Rhys, and Arthfael, were Kings in Gwent and Morganwg and Hywel Dda, Anarawd, Edward Foel, chief sovereigns of Wales in his time. Morgan Hen, afterwards King of Glamorgan, was born in the year of Cyfeiliawg's conse- cration 26. Libian succeeded Cyfeiliawg, and occupied the See about two years, as he died in 929. He was con- temporary with Hywel Dda and Edwal Foel, Kings of Wales Athelstan, King of England Tewdwr, son of Elised, King of Brecknock and Gruffydd ap Owain, a King who appears to have had dominion in the district of Gower. 27. Gulfrid. Cadell, son of Arthfael, and Cadwgan, son of Owain, were Kings in the distiicts of Gwent and Morganwg in his time. 28. Marchlwys, or Marchluid. Morgan Hen and his sons, Owain, Idwallon, Cadell, and Cynfyn, were Kings of Glamorgan in the time of this Bishop. He died in 943, when Hywel Dda was King of the whole of Wales, and Edmund the Elder King of England. (Under Dubricius, or St. Dyfrig, we referred to the Fad Felen" of his time. Since writing the above, we came to the following record of the same, in Cof Cyf- arwydd," or Chronological Traditions of the Cymry, in 1010'S MSS. 410. Bu clefydau a marwolaethau mawrion, achos yr haint melyn, ac aohaws hwnw y celaneddau nas claddwyd yn pydru ar wyneb daear." 436. Gwnaethpwyd Dyfrig Sant yn Archesgob yn Llandaff, ac Illtud Sant yn Ben-Athraw yn Mangor Tew- dws, sef Bangor Illtud a Llanilltyd-Fawr ac ar hyn o amser y bu haint mawr yn Mhrydain, yn ddial Dnw am bechodau y Cymry.") We find the name ef Bishop Marchlwys as one of those who accompanied Hywel the Good to Rome, in the year 926, in order to consult about the proposed revisal of the Welsh laws. He died in 943. 29. Padarn became Bishop of Llandaff A.D. 943. In his time Nowi was King of Gwent. Pater, or Padarn, died 961, and Rhodri, son of Morgan Hen appointed his successor, contrary to the will of the Pope but being poisoned, he was followed by another. This Padarn must not be confounded with the more celebrated St. Padarn who resided in Cardiganshire, and founded a small See at Llanbadarn-fawr, A.D. 516. 30. Gwgan, died in 9S2. His consecration is thus recorded in Lib. Land. p. 509 In the year of our Lord 982, Gwgan, Bishop of Llandaff, was consecrated by the Metropolitan Dunstan, Archbishop of Canter- bury—the pastoral staff being then in the royal court by Edgar, King of England his suffragan Bishops of England being present—Berthlem, Alfwold, Athelwold, Oswald then the names of the Abbots present are given. 31. Bledri was appointed Bishop of Llandaff, A.D. 983. In the Brut," or the Welsh Chronicle, he is said to be the best scholar in all Wales, and for the said reason was denominated Bledri Ddoeth." He was so zealous in the diffusion of learning, that he enjoined the clergy to instruct the people in learned books—to diffuse education and morality. He died A.D. 1022, in the 33rd year after his consecration. The Kings of Glamorgan in his time were Rhys ap Owen and Meurig ap Hywel. The Kings of Gwent were Edwyn, Rhodri, and Gruffydd and Canute was the King of England. The Liber Landavensis furnishes a specimen of the rude and violent habits of the age in which the prelate lived. The family of Edwyn, son of Gwriad, King of Gwent, quarrelled with the family of Bledri, Bishop of Llandaff, so that in the quarrel, which was carried on with great fury and shedding of blood, the Bishop interfered, unattended, and, wishing to allay the squabble, stood between the parties, and lie was wounded by some wicked fellow of the king's family. The quarrel being settled, the Bishop came to Llandaff, and summoned all his clergy from the mouth of Taratyr, on the banks of the Wye, to the mouth of Towy, unto a synod at Llandaff; and he caused the king, with all his family, to be excommunicated The record goes on to state that the King was reduced to reason and submission, and that he and his family sought pardon at Llandaff, giving ample satisfaction for his misdemeanour. 32. Joseph was consecrated Oct. 1, 1022. This Bishop also was distinguished for his zeal ar.d perseverance in reforming the morals and abuses of his diocese he issued an injunction against carrying on any work on the Sunday and holy days and the priests were com- manded to teach the people to read the Scriptures with- out pay or reward. His consecration is thus recorded in "'Liber Landayensis": Joseph was consecrated Bishop of Llandaff by Archbishop Aelnod, A.D. 1022, with the approbation of Canute King of England the pastoral staff was given unto him by the election of the people, and fhe clergy of Llandaff and the Kings of Britain, that is Rhydderch ap Jestyn, King of all Wales, and Howel, sub-regulus of the King of Glamorgan within Taratyr on the AVve and the mouth of the Towy. Peace and morality and religion prevailed much under this Rhydderch and this Joseph. In their time there was no desolation throughout all Wales, either on the mountain or the plain, except in three villages which were in a solitary situation." (L.L. p. 519.) This Rhydderch added some thirty-eight parishes from the See of St. David's, upon this prelate Joseph but the benefactions were not confirmed by his successors. Jestyn ap Gwrgan became King of Morganwg before the death of this prelate, which took place in 1046. 33. Herwald or Herwallt was consecrated Bishop in 1056, and held the See of Llandaff for forty-eight years. The sovereigns of Wales during his time wereGruffydd ab Llewelyn, Bleddyn ap Cynhyn, Trahaearn ap Caradawc, Rhydderch ap Caradwc, Rhys ap Oiven, lthys ap Tewdwr, and Gruffydd apCynan. The Kings of Gwent were Meurig ap Hywel and his sons Cadwgan and Rhys, Jestyn ap Gwrgan, Gruffydd ap Rhydderch ap Jestyn, ana his brothers Caradawc and Rhys; Caradawc ap Gruffydd, and Rhydderch. From some of these teguli the Nor- mans conquered the district under Fitzhammon in 1091. Horwald died in 1104, and the see remained vacant for about four years, he being at the time of his death upwards of one hundred years old. The consecration of this Bishop is recorded in the Liber. Lan. with some account of his life. He was ordained priest by Bishop Josepli-was a native of Wales-speiit some of his early life in England—was selected Bishop by the invincible Gruffydd, the monarch of the Britons, and Meurig son of llywel. The prelates, priests, doctors, chiefs, agreeing thereto and confirmed by ihe Arch- bishop Cynisis, the glorious Lord Edward III., King of the Anglo-Saxons being present. 34. Urban, Welsh Gwrvan, Archdeacon of Llandafl, was consecrated Bishop of Llandaff in I IOS. He rebuilt the Cathedral of Llandaff, aud recovered lands of which the see had been deprived. He was cut o.i by death in his fourth journey to Rome, in the 57th year of his age, and in the year 1133. In the Brut," a Welsh chronicle, this Bishop is represented as being celebrated for his wisdom and libe- rality, as well as his munificent endowments upon the Cathedral of Llandaff, and upon various monasteries, which had been plundered during the wars of Jestyn ap Gwrgan and Robert Fitz-Hammon. It is also stated j that he acted vigorously against vicious habits and cus- toms, and was a conciliatory arbitrator in all contentions. In the Liber Landavensis there are several chapters bearing ample testimony to the indefatigable zeal of Bishop Urban in his efforts to restore his diocese to its j original state. There were several law-suits between him and the Bishops of St. David's and Hereford, and he travelled four times to Rome to plead his case in person. He also rebuilt the cathedral, which had become a Jleap of ruins during the wars which terminated in the conquest of Glamorgan. It was he al-o that re. moved the remains of Dubricius from Bardsey island, and had them deposited in the cathedral. We have given already some of the letters sent by the Pope Calixtus, to Henry 1. King of England, ai-ci Ralph, Archbishop of Canterbury, commanding them to assist the said Bishop Urban in theres'oration of the Cathedral. Amongst the ordinances of the Council of Rhehns, held at this time, we find the following — In the year of our Lord 1119, the Council of [Uuiiu aqembled by Pope Calix [Iq, at which were present Louis VI., King of France, and five hundred pastoral staves — both Archbishops, Bishop, and Abbots—and a large num- ber of clergy and laity, at which Urban, Bishop of the Church of Llandaff, was present, and that the privileges of his church, with all its dignity, were renewed, and a charter granted under seal, with letters of salutation to the Archbishop, the King, and to the people." The Pope adds :— "Bishop Urban came flying for S!JC0Ur to the gate of the Apostolic See. We heard this honourable and reli- gious man, and compassioned him, for ho informed as that the Mother Church, the Church of Llandaff, had suffered so much from the invasions and robberies of certaiu monks, clergy, and laity, that the Bishop cau scarcely remain in it." Then comes an order that the King of England, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the clergy, and laity, shall assist the said Bishop Urban in the work of restoration. We shall only quote the following, as it throws some further light upon the litigation of his times, and the pertinacity of this Bishop's character — "Innocent, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to his venerable brother Urban, the Bishop of Llandaff, health and apostolic benediction. It is our wish to give peace to the churches of God, and if any dispute arises among them, to settle it by judicial process. Tilu, c- fore, because a dispute has arisen betwixt thee and our brother Bernard, Bishop of St. David's, respecting the rights of the parishes of Gower, Kidwelly, Cantrebychan, Ystrad-yw, and Ewvas, we strictly command thee that on the next festival of St. Luke, thou shalr, setting every obstacle aside, appear before us, prepared to answer our said brother, Bishop Bernard, as well with respect to the said churches as concerning Talybont (probably Llandilo- Talybont, in Gower). Given at Piretum, the 11th day of May, 1131.) Respecting the re-building of the Cathedral by the Bishop, the late Dean of Llandaff says-" That when Urban, the earliest Bishop after the Norman conquest of this district, was preparing to translate to his own I cathedral the relics of Dubiicius from the Isle of Bardsey, where he had been first buried, he found the primitive cathedral founded by the said Dubricius far too humble to afford a suitable receptacle for his re- mains for it consisted rather of a small chapel than a church, its length being only twenty-eight feet, its breadth fifteen, and height twenty; such were the humble edifices of the first centuries." It is further stated in the Archaeologa Cambrensis, "that Urban built only a small, though highly enriched church, consisting only of a nave and a chancel, with possibly a polygonal tower on one side and that his nave survives in the present presbytery, while the Lady Chapel occupies the site of his chancel."

JFnrÛgn anh Cntaiitl Jims. FRANCE.—The advices from Paris are less warlike than they have lately been. The Paris journals sup. posed to be in communication with the Government, the Pays and Constitatiomiel, have published articles in deprecation of the alarm to which recent words and acts have given rise. War is possible, says the Constitutionnel, only in case treaties are broken or menaced. The Pays soundly rates the Pres8e for its effusions in King Cambyses' vein, and accuses it of having for the last two months endeavoured to pro- voke a war. These remarks were not without their effect on the Bourse. Early on Friday the Rentes rose as high as 69, but at the close of the day's ope- rations they fejj again to 68.50. The article in the Constitutionnel is supposed to have emanated directly from the Foreign Office. The Times' Correspondent j says- It was drawn up at the Foreign Office yes- terday as it stands to-day in the Const it utionnel. It was written oil office paper, in the official form, a rivulet of manuscript running through a meadow of margin,' in that peculiar fair hand familiar to clerks and private secretaries, and, in fine, bearing all over au official character. rhe writer attributes the alarm to three causes—the words addressed by the Emperor to Baron Hubner at the New Year's-day levee, the speech of the King of Sardinia, and the marriage of the Prince Napoleon with the Princess of Savoy; and he expresses his surprise that they should produce such effects." But rumours of warlike tone and tendency are still plentiful enough. The French Cabinet is said to be divided on the question. The journals, it is reported, have been warned either to cease blowing the war trumpet or to blow less ur- gently. Rumours of another note in the Moniteur are current. On the other hand the statement is repeated (hat extensive preparations are afoot. The Paris Correspondent of the Globe says that "every symptom of war is apparent in the most varied quar- ters and he mentions a recent ball at the Tuileries, where nothing but strategic conversation was heard all night;" describes the percussion cap factory as working" double tidesreports the purchase of horses; the passage of "every disposable ship car- penter" from Brest and Cherbourg to Toulon; the activity of the commissariat; says it is understood" that General M'.Uahon will be the commander-in- chief of the Army of Italy and that of the African contingent 30,000 men are to embark forth- with and land in Italy—this was positively stated at the ball aforesaid at the Tuileries."—The Times cor- respondent writing at a later date, says :—The course of affairs is clearly tending to a pacific turn. I do not allude so much to the subdued tone of the Minis- terial journals-for their business is to repeat what- ever is told them, irrespectively of truth or falsehood -as to the manifest feeling of the country. I am assured that the reports of the Prefects of Depart- ments, received up to the latest date, and purporting to give the sentiments of the population of their respective districts, are decided in their reprobation of war. These reports, it must be remembered, ema- nate from men who might suppose it to be to their interest to flatter whatever they thought prevailed in the highest quarter; but, even under such circum- stances, they do not venture to make statements which could be at once contradicted. These reports, then, if I am correctly informed, set forth not merely disapprobation, but horror, among the population at the bare notion of a war for Italy, which would soon become European. But it is not only the reports from the interior that thns denounce the wild chase after adventures so enthusiastically advocated by the Presse. I learn that the despatches of the French diplomatic agents abroad, with, I suppose, the excep- tion of the oue at Turin, represent the feelings of the Governments to whom they are accredited, and of the society in which they mingle, as equally adverse to a warlike policy. As to what the Emperor's own Cabinet Miaisters think of the matter, it is hardly necessary to repeat that they are, I believe to a man, among its warmest opponents and we have too recent and unmistakeable evidence of panic among the commercial classes to allude to them further. From what I hear, too, I am inclined to doubt that the mission of General Kiel, who, as you are aware, accompanies Prince Napoleon to Piedmont, is exclu- sively what has been represented—namely, to inspect the fortresses and strong places of that country with a view to hostilities. Doubtless he may give the Piedmontese the benefit of his talents and professional experience, and they may adopt his suggestions against future emergencies; but I should not be surprised if the General, who stands deservedly high in the regard of Priiscc Napoleon, used his influence rather to calm the fermentation which the Imperial presence may give rise to, or perhaps try to prevent it. The following telegram was received from France on Tuesday —" The Constitatiomiel of this morning con- tains an article on the affairs of Servia, signed by its principal editor, M. Renee. This article confirms the statement that a conciliatory note has been received from Austria, and adds, 'The speedy solution of this difficulty, in wnicli Austria makes an act of deference to public opinion in Europe, cannot but strengthen the confidence in the maintenance of peace, and com- plete the calming of the public mind.' A corres- pondent, writing on Monday, says :-A high munici j pal functionary entertained at dinner yesterday one of the Cabinet j\]Linisters—I believe the Minister of the Interior—and to meet him were invited the Prefects of Police and t he Seine, the members of the Municipal Commission of Paris, and certain other persons of corporate distinciion. The conversation naturally turned^on the great topic of the day—peace or war. the Minister was asked his opinion, when, as I am informed, he replied unhesitatingly—"We shall not have war, and it is to the persevering efforts of more than one distinguished person that France owes the maintenance of peace." The writers charged with the correspondence of cataill foreign newspapers, fur- nished by the Government, have received orders to announce that there will be no war. Generally speak- ing, the language of official people is more and more pacific. On the other hand, it is affirmed in some quarters that the preparations have not relaxed that there is activity in the arsenals and military work- shops; that armourers, carpenters shoemakers, bakers, and other artisans are in constant requisition; and that contractors have been ordered to forward to Toulon without delay the necessary supples. The feeling, however, for peace is still general. i he livies Paris correspondent writes that consi- derable difficulty was experienced in obtaining the King of Sardinia's consent to the marriage of his daughter with Prince Napoleon, and that it was finally only procured through the influence of the Emperor of Russia. NAPLES.—Private letters from Naples of the 12th mst., stat.e that a Royal decree was expected deelarin0- the city of Naples in a state of siege. A decree orders the trial of political offenders by military tribunals, and directs that their sentences be executed within twenty-four hours of being passed. The reasons for this measure are not known. INDIA.—The following telegram has been received at the foreign office dated Alexandria January 10 :— i The subjugation of the districts is rapidly progress- ing the insurgents arc dissolving before the merciful conditions offered by the Queen's proclamation, and the dismantling of the forts and disarming of the population is being carried on rigorously — (query, vigorously?) On the 1st of December Brigadier Troup's column met a large body of rebels at Biswa, in Oude, commanded by Ismael Khan. Onr artillery and cavalry only were engaged, but the enemy made very little stand and fled. The result of this affair was that on the 4th Ismael Khan gave himself up, j with a considerable number of adherents. Some others have since followed his example. Tansia Topee is still at large; when last heard of he was supposed to be making for Oodeypore, in Ryjpootana. On the 5th of December a party of rebels, fugitives from the Fil Fifelli (?), at Biswa, eluded the vigilance of the British troops, posted along the banks of the Ganges between Cawnpore and Kimong, and crossed at once into the Doab, with the intention it is coujectured, of joining Tautia Topee in Central India. This party, under Ferode Shah, mustered 900 horse, 300 foot, one small gun and some elephants. On the 8th they were encountered by Mr. Hume, who was forced to retire upon Hurchandpore, where he occupied a small fort. On the 12th the rebel party was at Tangeooa, moviug south, plundering and burning as they went, and closely pursued by General Napier." The following telegram, dated Gwalior, December 18, from Major Manakersen (?), gives the latest intelligence of them: —" liaiiade.-Oti the 17th of December Sir R. Napier beat and pursued with slaughter for eight miles the rebels under Ferode Shah. Captain Meade, 14th Dragoons, captured six elephants; Captain Prethjahn (query Pretyman ?), 14th Dragoons was wounded in the leg, and eight or ten men wcr. wounded. None killed."

THE POLICY OF FRANCE IN ITALY. (From the Times) We may now venture to hope that the principal dan- ger of an European war has for the present passed away. It would be well if we could s ty that after the blowing over of this stormcloud the world might indulge in visions of permanent calm and sunshine. But the forces which threaten disturbance of European quiet still exist, and are only for a time compressed by the weight of universal opinion. There is, however, satisfaction to be mingled with the regret which mankind moot see the enthronement of an armed and restless despotism in Europe. It will appear to any one who has watched the course of these events that, after all, there is a moral power not wholly unable to cope with Emperors and Kings. Although political institutions have perished on the Continent-altlkougli virtuous Republicans now bow low in Imperial ante-chambers and voices which were loud in denying to a Constitutional King the right of in. terf'eriug with his own Government now praise the con- stant initiative of the Chief of the State, though a shameless and unhallowed connexion exists between the Cabinet and the Bourse, so that no man can separate the statesman from the stockjobber in his notions of more than one satellite of the Monarchy, although the tribune is dumb and the press a shadow, yet the rulsr of France is not wholly independent of the nation he governs. He can be controlled, if not by the outcry, at least by the slience of his people. One liberty must be left even to the most enslaved—the liberty of apathy. Not even the lawyers of Napoleon III.'s Courts can venture to de- clare lack of enthusiasm a crime against the State. So the Italian plot has failed. The French people have not extemporised indignation at the wrongs of Lombardy in obedience to the Imperial word of command, 't hey have not been rapt into a loyal ecstasy at the interesting event which takes Prince Napoleon to Turin. The sympathy of King Victor Emmanuel for the Austrian provinces exemplified by his alliance with a family which deci- mated Lombardy with conscriptions and carried off Titian's masterpieces from Venice, has not roused Frenchmen to hail him Monarch of Northern It dy. In fact, the train has not taken fire; everything "as ready for the explosion, but we have only a confused murmur of exi,ec,a! ioii, a cry to take care, for the shock will be tremendous, and then the damp powder crackles fur a moment, goes out, and the engineers look in each other's faces biank with astonishment. And yet the scheme was well imagined. It seemed at one time that there would really be a war, and one in which France would not be without a pretext sufficient to excuse her own acts and weaken the protests of her neighbours. Austria, as we all know, is the butt of the European family. Every one has some- thing to say against this morose and stationary Power, which holds a bundle of provinces together by the missal, the bayonet, and the stick. Unknown in the world of letters, studious only of the art of governing and of the practical sciences which assist it, dwarfing the intellect and crushing the soul, Austria is supposed to represent the bad principal in human government even more than the Papacy of the Russian Empire. To attack such a State would be naturally to have the sym- pathies of the whole Liberal party in Europe. Why should not Napoleon III. do brittle with this power of evil, and thus win back the esteem of the popular party at home and abroad ? Really the idea was magnificent, it promised every dream of ambition the readiest means of its accomplishment. The traditions of the first Empire might be renewed by triumphs on the earliest battle-fields of the great Emperor. Italian assassins might be disarmed by the gratification of their ven- geance against their most hated, though perhaps not their most dangerous, foe. Then the halo of victory might encircle the Imperial brow itself. Why should not the Chief of the State take the command in person? He has studied, he has written, he has had practical knowledge of armies during ten years why should be not be as good a General as the Niels and M Mahons ? This it is which makes an Italian campaign so tempting. The field is so near, so accessible. Then Lombardy is a country rich beyond the dreams of Zouaves. The war may be made to support the war, and that is a great consideration for a ruler who is increasing the debt of his country in a time of profound peace at more than £ 15,000,000 a year. A campaign on the Rhine or a razzia on the English coast is an expensive and hazardous affair; the risk is seme hing terrible, and, then, too, a subordinate must be appointed to command, who in case of victory may become a formidable rival. But a war in Italy is a war de luxe. Personal glory, employment to a restless army, gratification to a vain people, a reconci- liation with a large class of the Liberal partv, and a side- long triumph over pertinaciously critical England, who would have to stand by and see the treaties of 1815 torn to pieces,-ikll these would be the results of a bold gime, and the first move was accordingly taken at the recep- tion on New Year's-day. But the Emperor and his familiars knew not the moral strength which is still left in the enlightened communities of Europe. We have no desire to arrogate 10 this country more th tn its sliare of influence on man- kind, but we shall have the acquiescence of candid men of all nations when we assert that to the unanimous and indignant reprobation of English opinion is due the failure of the Imperial plots. Any Englishman who has watched the tendency ot' Continental opinions as ex- pressed in conversation or writing during the last few years must feel proud of the position to which this nation has attained. While silence and fear reign every- where abroad, the eyes and ears of the Continent are turned continually to these islands. We may not be greater or wiser or juster than ten years since, but because we are the only free people and have the only independent Legislature.and untrammelled press Eng- lish opinion has been erected into a kind of Areopagus, and a verdict passed on any great question has a force in Europe which is all the more strange since as indi- viduals we are probably as unsympathetic and unpopular as ever. The decided and unwavering judgment of the English Government and press has, it is a imit'ed on all hands, been chiefly instrumental in checking the madness of the Bonap,rtist clique. Austria has received a support on which she hardly counted, and France has been met with a resolution which her rulers deemed wholly im- possible. We sincerely trust that the former of these Powers will appreciate the behaviour of a nation which bears no good will to Ultramontane absolu'ism that Francis Joseph will recognise that, after all, a free people may be a better ally than any dear brother of the Im- perial class; and that he will endeavour to restore in his dominions the kindly authority which distinguished the old German Empire, in the place of that military oppression which his family has learnt from the Romanoffs. As for the French people we congratulate them on the clearness with which they have seen that their advantage in this case coincided with the claims of justice. They have not wanted organs to assure them that Knglarid was too much exhausted by the Indian War to think of contravening the schemes of France and that, even if the Q.ieeu's Government desired to interfere, the English liberals would check any anti- Italian policy. They have now been uudcceiveJ, and for the sake of all parties to this dispute, for the sake of France and Italy most of all, we rejoice that the com- mon sense of mankind has won the day. The war so recklessly invoked would probably in six months have made a combination against France as formidable as that of 1815. Ita y in any case could only gaini change of masterB, and substitute Ihe King S'ork of a French Viceroy for the King Log of an ordinary A ustrian Arch- duke. Now we are happy to believe that there is no danger but from the foily of the Sardinians, who, hav- ing long kept up an army entirely disproportion-te to the extent and wealth of their country, have looked to liar as an escape from the financial difficulties which otherwise threaten to overtake them. Unless these, however, in sheer desperation, break the peace, we have no doubt that the danger is for the present over.

Ax INDIAN TIGER HUNT.—A tiger hunt which has just taken place in the vicinity of Broach deserves special mention on account of the good conduct and courage shown by the police employed. Captain Graham, Superintendent of Police at Broach, had pitched his tent on the loth on the Surat side of the river near Ilansote. He received information about the middle of the day that a large tiger had taken up his position in a village near, and had just killed a woman and severely mauled a man whom he found working in the field. Graham at once sent off a sowar to ask the men in Broach to come out, saying that he would wait till 5 o'clock, and then, if no one came, he would attack him himself. He waited till 5, and then set out with a naique and six Sepoys of the armed police, and some peons. As they were going towards the place through a cotton field, suddenly the tiger sprung up from the cotton and charged Graham, who galloped off, and the tiger, failing in his charge, retreated. Graham ordered his men to load, and taking his rifle gave chase to the tiger. When he got within 50 yards he pulled up and made a beautiful shot from the saddle, his grey Arab standiug as steadily as a rock. The ball passed through the tiger's neck and brought him down. Graham waited till his men came up and advanced on him. Then he gave him another shot, on which the tiger sprang up apparently unhurt, and roar- ing furiously charged right down on the Sepoys, who received him with a volley, which did not stop him. He rushed on a coolie police Sepoy, who with the utmost coolness and courage received him with the bayonet; inflicting a severe wound on the head. But the tiger bore down the Sepoy's defence, and seized the end of the musket in his jaws. So immense was the strength of his jaws, that the musket and bayonet were bent to a right angle, and the mal ks of his teeth are visible groved out in the iron of the barrel. Seizing on the Sepoy he clawed him fearfully. Graham could not get his second gun for a minute seeing which the peons, Mussulmans, drew their swords, and most gallantly attacked the tiger, they slashed him so with their swords that he left the man, when Graham, who had got his second gun, put a ball through hisheart. They took the tiger and wounded Sepoy and set off at once to Broach, where they arrived about 4 on the morning of the 16th. The Sepoy was sent into the hospital, and the doctor thought he would recover, as no large vessel appeared to be injured, though he was frightfully lacerated. He asked for four hairs from the tiger's whiskers, which he said were a charm to cure him if tied round his wrist. However, on the night of the 16th he began to sink rapidly, and on the 17th, to the great regret of all, he died. He was a most gallant fellow. We never heard before of a tiger being shot from the saddle..standard.

(Tlte ¿H'mtr.$' 0. FARMERS AND FARMING.—A farm is a manufactory where nature is the great power, and one set of materials njUSl;i j converted into another more immediately adapted to the use of man. Daphnes and Corydons, the "oaten stop," the mossy lawn, the flowery mead, the woody brake, rivulets wandering as they please, and ancient oaks everywhere overshadowing the tand.are now as exploded as goats and Satyrs. If you want them you may road Shenstone or Theocritus but you must not take a farm in the northern county. Possibly in some of our own sand hills neirer town your taste might be partially gratified hut in that exact proportion you must give np all visions of profit. If you make the latter your chief object Mr. Grey tells you how to do it. In the first place, you must have capital. England is not a country for squatters If you wish to be a l,.obin- son Crusoe, go to a colony, though even there you will want ;he moidores, the dollars, and the pieces of eiijht which he found so worthless. You can no more make a fortune by farming without capital than by selting up a stall or a handcart in the greengrocery line. You must have capital, and the more the better. Then get a large farm, divided into large fields, in tolerably good condition, for which you mus1 expect to pay the out- going tenant. Set yourself well up with horses, ploughs, cuts, and eve^y machine found io work well. You must have at least one steam engine. Nevei fear the Nymphs and Dryads did not like it at first, but they are accustomed to it by this time. Thus armed, begin your hard race w'th nature, and never be behindhand one single day. Don't spare siuano, bone, phosphates, or whatever else dot*s better for the purpose. These will give you root crops. Then have plenty of sheep, and fold them, not merely just here or there, but as widely as you can. Store the roots in heaps all over the land, so that the s eep may not be reduced to frost- bitten swedes, or starved out altogether. Tuere is a j saying in the South. Do ns that a good shepherd can never be on good terms with his master. The former cares for the sheep, when the latter is always trying to get off with some rubbish or other. But, says Mr. Grey, the secret of sheep-farming is, never let the poor things stand still, much less full out of condition. They lose a month to begin Vi-.th, another month to recover, and a third month to gel really into condition again. You must reckon on sending them to market before they are two years old, na.y, at 14 or 15 months they will bring you the price of go; d mutton and two shear- 1 ings besides. As fast as they leave the ground send in an army of ploughs, or let the ploughs make drill row; let the dungcarts follow immediately then the ploughs again then th0 harrows and in a day or two you begin seed operations that small farms are peddling about half the winter and spring too. You mu-t, if possible, reap as well as thrash with a machine, and get ail the straw, Stubble for partridges is a second consideration. Let the sportsman look to that. If you cannot get the price for wheat that people used to do sometimes, you will make up for it by ciops ]i-v 1 f as large again, which will pay you better than famine prices. But, even if you don't quite like parting wi'h your good wheat at 40s. a-quarter, and only yield in the presence of overwhelm- ing arrivals from all parts of the world, you will make it by your mutton, ¡,e..f, 111111 wool. Flooks and herds are not so capable of transport. The cheap corn makes J prosperity, and prosperity makes beet and mutton eaters. A few years ago a labourer was thought fortunate in- deed if he could keep a couple of pigs and get a rasher of bacon occasionally. Now the butcher calls at his cottage for orders, just as he does at the parsonage or the squire's. There can he no doubt how this answers to the farmer. There is great competition for large farms, which let readiiy at an advance, ometirnes of 25 per cent. Some people lament the disappearance oj small farms. It is an old complaint. Ail over England, particularly in the populous midland counties, you are tol,l of the number of farms joined into one, the hedge- rows grubbed up, the farmhouse converted into cottages, or pulled down j ttie small yeomanry extinguished. Don't heed it. They were a sad, slovenly, unthrifty lot; bad employers, bad tenants, bad customers, bad neigh- bours, and too often bad Christians. Let them survive in story. If you want to provide for a good labourer who has saved money in your service, and deserves a chance of rising, give him a small farm but it's a chance whether you are do;ng him a real kindness. Thirty years ago a small farmer found it difficult to compete with his strotigerneiglibour, even though he put his own labour into the ground, and lived hard. Much more so is it now. These changes are spontaneous, and cannot be prev, iited, for they are a law of Provi. dence. It is as vain to struggle against large farms as against large mercantile concerns, I rge shops and fac- tories, large ships, large towns, railways, steam, or any other novelty of com bin tion or power. Struggle if you please find your way into the Gazette write a poem in defence of the old system; get somebody to publish it for you; and failill; that, proclaim war with society and Heaven, the powers you are really contending against. All that we are now concerned with is that farming may be carried on with profit. Whether land is a profitable investment is another question. You can at least sell it, for no hiag sells more readily. As for the farmers, a man with capital who understands his business, and will devote himself to it, is now more certain to make it answer than he was thirty or forty years ago. He is cer;ain of customers, who are rapidly increasing in numbers and improving habits. We are adding to ourselves a thousand a-dny, and that thousand, instead of helping to starve the existing population, will be so many more customers, with more than so much more to pay. Other ills may he in store for us,-war, among them but, let hngland alone, and by the blessing of Heaven she is doilI her duty to her children.— Timest GARDEN OPERATIONS. FLOWER GARDEN AND SHRUBBERIES.— With the exception of pruning, or thinning and wheeling when the weather is frosty, little can be done in these depart- ments at present. Any of the shrubbery borders which may require a dressing of fresh soil or manure should however be atten,led to whenever the weather is favour- able for such work. Any alterations that may be in hand involving the removat of a considerable bulk of soil, cutting walks, or anything whicÍJ c 1I1 be judiciously done now, should be pushed forward expeditiously, in oruer to have the bands at liberty for the ordinary routine of spring work, which will be soon demanding attention. W hen om- loor operations cannot be profit ably proceeded with, ^e to getting an ample stock of stakes made andpamtei. also pegs', latiels, brooms, &c and put them aside ready for use when wanted. The preparation of these things is sometimes omitted until they are wanted for use, and then it is generally difficult to spare time for such tedious work; therefore see that there is a sufficient stock of all such things in readiness before the busy season arrives. HARDY FRUIT AND KITCHEN GARDEN. The pruning of orchard trees is a matter which is too frequently neglected, and the result is that tho heads of the trees get so cro <ded with wood as to render a crop of fruit, except upon the extremities of the outer branches, not to be expected, and the thicket of worse than uee/ess spray which the trees have to support is injurious both to the siz ■ and quality of the fruit, and also to the general health of the tree. Where this state of things has been allowed to prevail, advantage should be taken of the first opportunity to give the trees a care- ful pruning, thinning out the iunet branches severely. In tile case of lar branches being cut off, the surface of the wound should be neatly trimmed off with a sharp tool and covered with a coat of paint, to prevent the wet soaking into and rotting the wood. See to the pro- tection of lettuces, c-mliflowers, &c., under glass, by gu irding them from frost bllt lake every opportunity of exposing such thinjis to light and air. Introduce roots of- asparagus, seakale, and rhubarb into heat at regular intervals, so as to make sure of a constant supply. Rhubarb and seakale do well on a shelf or the floor of a mushroom lou,e, where they are probably less trouble- some than elsewhere.

The pri- soners were indicted for having committed grievous bodily harm oa board a vessel in the county of Glamor" g<m. It appeared that the vessel was a foreign vessel, and ivas lying at Penarth-roads, in the Bristol Channel. ihe question was whether there was jurisdiction within the county of Glamorgan, it being contended that the offence could not be held to luve been committed within that county. The caso w;,s tried before Mr. Justice Crompton, when one of the prisoners was confided of the felony, and two only of a misdemeanour. Two points were reserved, whether there was jurisdiction, and whether the two prisoners could be convicted of a misdemeanour. Mr. Bowe for the prosecution, contended that it had I been laid down that where the ship was within forces 1 te,-rce it was within the county. This vessel was lying I within the port of Cardiff. It was clear that the jury € ■nou r fin!j one prison,jr gm'ty of one offence and the others of another. 1 Gilford, for the prisoner, urged that this could not oe taken to be part 0f the county of Glamorgan..New- port was within the port of Newport, and yet Newport was in the county of Monmouth. The Court having retired fur some time, on their return, The Chief Justice said that the Court were of opinion tnat the conviction was right. The only question that it became necessary to deal with was the one raised by the case whether the part of the sea in which the vessel was at the time the offence was committed, formed a part of the body of the county of Glamorgan, and they were of opinion that it did. The sea in question was a part of the Bnstul Channel, both shores of which, as was well known, formed part of the kingdom of Lngland and the counties to which the shores iespeotively belonged were on one side the county of Glamorgan, and on the other the county of Somerset. They were of opinion that, looking at the local situation of this sea, it must be taken to belong to the counties respectively by the shores of which it was bound, and the fact of t'ie island called the Steep Iloime being taken as being in the parish of Sr. Mary's, Cardiff, was a strong illustration of the principle upon which this decision proceeded that the uhole of this inland sea was to be C' nsidered as within the counties and the shores by which it w,.s hounded. The conviction there- fore was right.—Conviction affirmed.
