I Ladies and Gentlemen, I Do not think because I have left you for a short time I am forgetting my dear town of Aberystwyth. I have not, and never will do I so. I am always- wishful to help my fellow- townspeople, and what I do I do on my own. I do not mean to form Limited Companies. I am going to supply Aberystwyth people not at control prices, but below control prices. If I am able to supply 12,000 of a population here with all requirements, the Military Hospital of 600 patients, Ardmillan Red Cross Hospital, General Montgomery's Red Cross Hospital, and I Lord Trevor's Red Cross Hospital at Chirk, as well as some of the leading fishmongers in ) England, surely I am able to supply the 8,000 of a population of Aberystwyth without form- ing companies. I have been a licensed fish- monger all my life. I hope all the members of this new Limited Company are the same. If not, see what the opinion of The Fish Gazette is. Well, I shall be with you shortly. I am travelling overnight to-night to Portsmouth to look for motor boats to fish for you. I have secured all my nets for mackerel and herring fishing, also Lobster Pots and Eel Traps, so it shan't be long before everything is in order, and the motor steam engine flying the "Union Jack." This will not be bought for JE250. It would not buy nets, far less boats. If you wish to go in for a Limited Company have thousands, not Fl shares, but get advice about it first. Do not think I am going to sell fish in the Market. I am going to help you and all my huisenss will be done by my Manager, Isaac Jones, 55, Terrace Road, Aberystwyth, where you will always get fair play and fair value for your money. A few words more and I have finished. I have, for two weeks, appealed to farmers to find eggs and poultry for you. I have paid top prices for advertisements. And what is the result? I have received fifty eggs. Shame! Why do you allow thousands of eggs to go out of Aberystwyth to be' profiteered elsewhere? If I were you I'd watch all the carts and trains come in and insist a fair proportion of the supply should be left in Aberystwyth, or I'd know the reason why. I'd smash them and their eggs! I'm a Welshman and I'm proud of it, but the Welsh farmer is not playing the game. A farmer last Wednesday brought a basket of eggs to Oswestry market. I told him I'd give top price, as I wanted them for wounded soldiers and the population of Oswestry, but he said he could not help that. He was a young man and I asked why he was not in khaki. He did not reply. Whfcp the man told me he did not care about the wounded soldiers it went to my heart. There is a bit of loyal Welsh in me, and I can play the game. Now, people of Aberystwyth, play the game, too! I am sure if your Food Controller is a fair man he will see that you get sufficient supplies. Do not think I want huge profits. It is war time and it is our duty to try to get food supplies for our own town. I am sorry to have written so straightly. Hope you will excuse me. Always your faithful servantL RANDOLPH FEAR. NEGLECTING HOUSING.
NEGLECTING HOUSING. The Local Government Board, which three months ago invited local authori- ties to state their plans for after-the- war housing, is now pressing for this information and has made clear the financial support which it is prepared to give. The Board's proposals have come before a large number of local authorities, and gratification has been expressed at the amount which the Government is offering. The urgency oi the problem is generally admitted, but there are still a few who seem to regard trafficking in houses as a legi- timate gamble. One such speaker asked last week, in North Wales, what would happen to the private owner if the local authorities commenced build- ing houses? This is such an old argu- ment, and one so easily answered, that it hardly seems necessary to touch upon it but it is well to stop even so feeble a criticism. It is an admitted fact that no property owner is in the business for his health. He has bought property as an investment, or as a speculation. He has to run a risk with house property exactly as if he bought shipping shares, coal shares, rubber shares, or even brewery shares No- body suggests that houses should be erected and let at uneconomic rents, but the speculator in life might as well understand now, as three years hence, that when the men come back from the trenches there will be no negotiating with property owners, but prompt' demand for a good house to live in at a fair rental. There are hundreds of houses in West Wales to-day which are unfit and are already condemned. If the owners of this property are under the delusion that they are to be allowed
FROM A BADGED MAN.
FROM A BADGED MAN. On Wednesday evening I received the following from a discharged soldier:— "I beg leave to thank you very- much indeed for inserting the advertisement in your paper. I was. more than surprised to think you. would conform with my request so quickly. I do not get your paper here in Loudon until Monday usually. I had three answers to the advertisement before I was. &w«ue that I had really advertised- "I think it is most kind of you to. help discharged men, in that. wu-y, and I think it is a fine example of {.y'.riotic appreciation. If your's is a tsanipie of the character of the Welsh people, I hope I shall be for- tunate enough to be among them very soon." Will employers help Us to help. those to whom we owe so much. R. EDITORIAL NOTES.
EDITORIAL NOTES. We have now been rationed for butter, for sugar, and for meat, but the rationing of alcoholic liquors is still but a dim possibility, though it is neither an article of food nor a necessity. Sir D. Maclean, chairman of the House of Commons Tribunal, says (That owing to the great change in the military position the same measure of consideration could not now be ex- tended in respect of the civil aspects of national interest. "At the same time," he added, "we do not intend and I hope that other tribunals do not intend to relax their efforts to prevent unfit men being sent into the army. You can-, no more assist thy army by sending it unfit men than you can get up steam on a battleship by using sand instead of coal." Mr. J. R. Clvne" is one of the ministers who. have made goo 1" in a position of considerable difficulty. lie is a labour man with broad and tolerant views. Pleading for closer relation- ship between employer and employed, he said You have either to reconcile the workman to his future industrial conditions or face him aif. a man in perpetual revolt against them. Master and men fought together in France and. Belgium. Here at home," he said, "they" should join hands to fight the slum foe, to fight the rotten cottage foe, to fight the conditions which undermine health, which have not given- up education, or given us opportunities for our children." In some cases allotment holders have founct more wealth than they bargained for. A holder at Penrith Castle turned up a George II guinea in a good state of preservation. A neighbour on the next pgttch, on the same day, turned up a gold ring. If these finds become common there will be a run on spades. Aberystwyth allotment holders, though engaged on ground where Llewelyn "put his enemies to flight at the castle near the Rhcidol" have so far found nothing more valuable than precious stones from tne beach—uncut—and a few rusty horse shoes.
NEGLECTING HOUSING.
———fc. to go on drawing rents, and prospering in their schemes 01 calculated murder, it is time somebody brought them UD with a jolt. K Tne local authorities are asked to. build houses. They will build them with the assistance of the Government grant. They will let them at a fair rental, and if the private owner cannot let his hovels in competition with muinicpal houses, then he must shut them up and the country will be the better and the sweeter for their closure.. No man buys house property with his • eyes shut. The owners of these con- demned houses and the owners of houses that ought to be condemned knew what they were buying when they took the gamble. The individual who, boasts himself in the fact that his grand aunt cousin's mother left him the pro- perty by will is even in a worse position, because he has got something that he- never even paid for. Will any member of any local authority seriously put forward the argument that the private property owner must be considered before the life and health of the nation?' If so, surely the time is ripe for some more local elections. One speaker at one council hit the nail on the head when he said that if an election were due fifty houses would be built im- mediately. The Government offer is a sound and fair one, and unless it is accepted and acted upon, the districts which have failed to formulate schemes will be faced with a greater cost, for there is every reason to hope, and believe, that the Government will insist on the erec- tion of workmen's dwellings, and wilt do the work, charging the local authori- ties with the costs. West Wales is in a horrible position in all sanitary affairs, particularlv with regard to housing and tuberculosis. Too great a tribute cannot be paid to the far-seeing medical officers who time after time press the councils to do their duty but unfortunately there are too few men of this stamp. There are districts where even the medical men are as blame- worthy as the local authorities. It is full time somebody spoke upon this very vital matter. Cardiganshire, so far as health work is concerned, is at a standstill. The local authorities in the district are simply playing with the problems that face them. Here is a county which can take a leading place in its War Loan investment and the very last place in its efforts to save the life of its little children. The terrible fact is that the present generation is follow- ing in the steps of its fathers, and the sins of the parents wili again be visited on the children. The gospel of housing should be preached and practised in church and chapel. It is not, and it will not bCt so preached or practised, but the workers can look forward to a time when they will once more elect their representative. That will be a day of much reckoning, and those who would save their own purses at the expense of the lives of their fellows will come to a period when the work they now neglect will cost them double and treble because they faiied to take advantage of the offer which is now made.
