A BRIDGEND FIRE,
A BRIDGEND FIRE, 5 Little Children in Danger. In the early hours of Saturday a fire broke out in a confectioner's shop occupied by Mr DanielFoster at No.7, Nolton-street, Bridgend. The fire was discovered by Mrs Foster, her husband being away. Returning to her bed- room after investigating the cause of the smoke. Mrs Foster and the servant carried down the four children. P.C. Phillips was soon on the scene, and found the inmates of the house outside with the exception of a little child, aged three, who had been left on the staircase. P.C. Phillips rushed through the passage, which was full of smoke, and brought the child out into the roadway. Inspector Evans, Sergeant David, and a number of uon stables then arrived, and threw buckets of water on the fire, until the arrival of the fire- brigade, when the outbreak was quickly ex- tinguished. An interesting incident occurred afterwards. P.C. Snow, on going upstairs to open the windows, found in one of the rooms a little fox terrier overcome by the fumes. P.C. A SWANSEA SAFE ROBBERY. £ 70 "STOLEN. Early on Saturday Mr Morgan Jenkins, who has a wholesale fancy goods shop in Waterloo- street, Swansea, was summoned to his place of business, and on arriving found that the pre- mises had been broken into, and that the police were in possession. On making an examination he discovered that his two safes had been opened and that from one £70 in gold and silver had been taken. In a drawer of one of the safes was a number of cheques, but these had only been examined, apparently. and then put back. In the office was a cash desk which had been forced open. The safes do not seem to have been broken open and it is believed that they must have been got at by means of keys. It is believed the entrance was obtained by the back door which had apparently been opened by the use of a. duplicate key. The only clue so far, m the hands of the police, is bloodstains on one of the cheques.

LORD H. CECIL AND THE CHURCH.
LORD H. CECIL AND THE CHURCH. Lord Hugh Cecil, addressing a mass meeting of men at Newcastle on Tuesday Drght, dealt with the position of the Church of England in its relation to politics. He regretted the necessity for any church to intervene in politics, but suggested there were cases when it was a choice of evils. They were told that by abandoning the Establishment they could avoid the necessity, but tbeEstabtisli- meut was not a system of privilege, as many erroneously beiieved, having one privilege onty —that of the bishops in the House of Lords, and be could not defend them on behalf of the Church but as an ancient institution and as the forerunner of the same system of life lJeer- ages. The Establishment was valuable as a national recognition, of religion, and only became an important political quostion when linked with the question of endowment. He could not understand hew anyone wishing religion well could wi?h for Disendowment. Therefore as Disendowment meant loss of resources for spiritual work, ha contended they could not be true to tbeir trust if they did not resist the proposab for Disestablishment and Disendowment. In that mutter they were interested purely in the religious aspect, and that also was their attitude on the question of religious education, and 8urely these issues justified tbeir political interference.

COLONEL HERBERT AND CROMWELL A Silly Report." Colonel Herfcert, M.P., speaking at Risca on Tuesday, said that the report that he, a soldier, was going to pull down the statue of Oliver Cromwell, one of the finest soldiers that had ever led British troops, was one of the silliest thincs he had heard. On one occasion he was found in the Opposition Lobhy, but it was because he did not consider the measure went far enough. (Hear, hear.) The one and only complete solution <if the education difficulty was secular education. (Cheers.) Dealing with the Trades Disputes Bill, he said the Govern- ment had s«ea the error of their ways in time, and the Bill which would be sent up to the House of Lords would bo a thorough going one. (Loud cheers.) Colonel Herbert said the Welsh Church Commission brought within measure- abie distance that which Wales had long looked forward to. (Applause.) The meeting was also addressed by Mr Arthur Black, of Liverpool, and local speakers. j
