BURGLES ARREST ON ROOF.
BURGLES ARREST ON ROOF. On Saturday evening Chief Inspector Mar- shall, of Rochdale, paid a visit to Birming- ham, in order to, if possible, effect the rrest of a man said to be one of a notorious gang of burglars.' He obtained the assistance of ten constables of the A Division, and on Sunday morning the company proceeded to an address in Bellbarn-road. The place was surrounded, and as soon as this fact became known the wanted" man escaped on to the roof, access to which he gained by smashing through the tiles. He was followed, and a desperate en- counter took place, in the course of which he fell into the yard, where he was promptly secured. He had received a severe scalp wound, and was taken to the General Hospital, where his injuries were attended to. THE CRADLE OF THE G.W.R.
THE CRADLE OF THE G.W.R. It must not be forgotten that Bristol was the cradle of the Great Western Railway, and that it was the money provided by N&ristol merchants which brought the scheme to frui- tion. Originally the terminus of the line, it is now the centre of railway communication- hardly equalled by any other place in the kingdom. The enterprise of its citizens has been ably seconded by the directors and officers of the Great Western, and as a conse- quence Bristol can boast of a train service such as few other places enjoy. The projected now line from Avonmouth to Filton, to pro- vide a direct route from the r ew docks to the main line to London isud South Wales, is a further and ample proof of the desire of the company to do all in thoir power to ensure the euecesa of the gigantic undertaking just com- In pleted by tho Corporation of Bristol.—" Great Western Railway Magazine,

Suicide in Prison Cell. .
Suicide in Prison Cell. THE TRAGEDY AT BRIXTON. The sensational sequel to the stabbing affray at the Bath Club last week was the sub- ject of an inquest by Mr G. P. Wyatt at Brix- ton Prison on Tuesday, when that gentleman sat to inquire into the circumstances of the death of George Martin Backenstrass, aged 30, a cook at the. club, who com- mitted suicide while' under remand at the prison in connection with the death of a fellow employee named Pierre Alletree at the club. It was alleged that de- ceased stabbed the other man during a dispute. Alletree died shortly after the occurrence. Detective Maditon said prisoner was under remand on a charge of murder. Warder Robson, the warder who found de- ceased hanging about half-past 6 o'clock on Thursday morning, said the deceased had hanged himself from a ventilator in the cell with his braces. Witness cut him down and called assistance. Artificial respiration was em ployed and the doctor called. Witntss first saw prisoner five minutes after 6. Previously he had been seen every quarter of an hour by the nifht patrol.. A Juror: When you went to the cell why did you not go in ? The Coroner He did go in. He found him hanging. The witness added that he had only just left his bed and the prisoner had been in charge of the night patrol. If his attention 'was called to a particular prisoner he would have been called up. William Thomas Haydon, assistant warder at Brixton Gaol, said he was the night patrol on the 30th. He saw the deceased every quar- ter of an hour. The last time was at 4.50 a.m. The man was then lying in the bed. Dr. Scott, the medical officer, said prisoner was admitted on the 28th. He was a foreigner, apparently a German. He said he had suffered from a nervous affection. There were marks of two wounds of an operation in the abdomen, but the man was in fairly good health, and behaved himself quite rationally, though he showed that he was naturally worried about the crime. On the prisoner's slate was found written words to the effect that he had not been in good health, that he felt the disgrace, that his conscience waa quite clear, and that he was guiltless of the offence with which he was cnarged. The jury returned a verdict of Suicide by hanging whilst in a state of unsound mind."
