PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT.…
PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. A WOMAlfoF WILES. A Story of Hearts and Diamonds. By ALICK MUNRO. [COPYRIG liT.J CHAPTER XVin.-(Continued.) "The senhora left home half-an-hour ago," said the maid. "Then I will see the Senlrora Neenah! Quick, girl!" "The Senhora Neenah went too." was the answer. "I am alone in the house." N Charlie was paying the driver. I called to him not to let the man go yet. It seemed that Hetty had been rather quicker than we had expected in flying from the consequences of her crime. Perhaps shie and Fraser were on their way out of Portugal already. But whether that were so, or whether they had merely gone to dig up the diamonds, they had taken Neenah with them. So we must follow! "Where have they gone?" I shouted to the maid. "I do not know," she answered; "but I have a letter for the senhor. If sen^»r wU1 wait for a moment, I will come down. After a space which seemed an ag-e, but wa.s probably not more than about two minutes, she appeared at the door, and gave me a note which she said that Neenah had slipped into her hand juet as she stepped into the carriage. A present of money, and a | gesture asking silence, had accompanied the passage of the note from hand to hand. and the girl had gathered that Neenah was in trouble of some sort, and did not wish the others to see wfiat she did. The others, it appeared, were Hetty, Fraser, and Fort; and 1 the Quartette h&d driven off Ave minutes after '}; Fraser had brought Hetty back from some- where eipe- the girl did not know where-in tlite carriage. The note was addressed to me a.t the Hotel Braganza, and the girl said she would have brought it to me there in the morning if I had not happened to come to- night. As I tore open the envelope I asked whether Neenah looked distressed, and whether she seemed to go unwillingly. "Shle went unwillingly," said the girl; "but she did not seem distressed. She looked angry, senbor. It was the Senhor Fort who looked distressed." "Then thera has been a row," I muttered, "and t>erhaps Fort will help her." The letter was short, and ran as follows: — "The place is the Bocca do Inferno. The others know; follow them if you care to. I am a prisoner for the present, but I don't know where they are taking me.—Neenah." Now I knew the Bocco do Inferno, and I wondered how any treasure could be con- cealed theTo. It is one of the show places of the Portuguese coast-a natural rock arch- way. through which the sea. flows into a great Pit in the limestone headland. It is a little bit to the north of the Tagus estuary, and is a great spot for picnics. I turned to Charlie. "I'm going back to Cascaes," I said. "Are you game to come too ? Cocheiro, will you I drive us back to Oascaee to-night?" "Sim, senhor, for ten milreis!" said the man. with a em.. "You shall have twenty! Jumpio, Charlie!" "Hum!" said Charlie, as be took his seat beside me, "the fellow's stables are at Cas- caes; he would be well paid at four mil! He's a wise man, though, to make his fortune while he can. What are we going back to Oaecaes for?" I showed him Neenah's letter. "The Bocca do Inferno is on the other side of Cascaes," I said. "They will get there first, but it's the second journey for their horses, and the first for ours. We shan't be long behind them!" I "By Jove, she's told them!" cried Charlie, as he read tin letter. "Yes," I said gleefully, "but she has told me too! That's much more important." The truth- was that this brief note from Neenah had improved my spirits wonderfully. The news it contained was disquieting enough in all conscience; for it meant that the enemy now knew everything, and it hinted that Neenah was, in spite of that fact, in danger í still. But she had written 'to me! She had ) turned to me for help when she waa in trouble. I and that was something which was worth all [ the rest. I I "They won't get to the Bocca first." said Charlie presently. "We shall be there before t them." "I am afraid not. I wonder what they'll ^lo with Neenah." "That's just it!" he explained easei-ly. "They won't take her with them to the Bocca, j you may be sure. They'll do th" part of the job without her. But they'll have to- take her somewhere, BO we shall get to the Becca- do Inferno before them. What are we going to do j when we're there?" I "Wa.it for them. see what they do. and then follow them to find Neenah," I said. I "And if they get the diamand&p" "Well, since the diamonds are Neenah a. we'll have a try to rescue them for her. But the first thing is to rescue Neenak i herself; j the diamonds must come second to that." "Ohr said Charlie, this time with an enor- mous yawn. "That's the programme, is it? Sounds as though it might prove exciting. Meanwhile, we've a couple of hours' drive in front of us, so I'm going to sleep. You'd better do the same; it's all the chance of rest we shall get." "I oaa't sleejrt" I told him impatiently. "Where can they have taken Neenah?" "Don't know-. Good-night!" said Charlie, and in five minutes he was snoring. .# Well, Charlie was not a lover, so he could sleep. I was, so I kept awake, and thought, of my love and her peril. But she had written to me-she had written to me! I told myself again and again that it was to me that she had turned in her difficulty, and in that thought I da-red to make light of her anger which had gone before. What did her anger matter now? It was curable, since it had not prevented her from writing that little note to me. True, the note said that she had carried out her threat, and) had told Hetty that the place was the Bocca; there was no sur- render there. But there was a. surrender in tine fact that the had told me too! I could have laughed aloud; but I should have waked Bloxham, and then I should have had to tell him what I was laughing at. He would not have understood; he would have thought, that Neenah repented of her foolish sacrifice of the diamonds, and wanted me to help her to retrieve the mistake which a fit of temper ha.d betrayed her into. Nonsense! I knew better than that! Theae was one thing. I felt sure that she had not told under compulsion, and. therefore (a,s the necessity for compulsion did not arise till after that dagger-thrust, of Hetty's), she had told some time in the earlier part of the day. Between the time of Hetty's arrival from Cas- caes to-night and the second departure imme- diately afterwards there would have been no opportunity for voluntary confidences; and for overcoming even the most half-hearted opposition the interval waa too short; those five minutes must have been crowded enough without that. Besides, the maid said that the Senhora Neenah looked angry—with Hetty probably-and they would not be likely to have succeeded in getting her secret by anger- ing her. No. she had told them earlier in the day—on the receipt of my letter telling her to keep silent, perhaps—in any case before Hetty went to Cascaes at all. Then why had Hetty wasted time by playing thie masquerade in the roulette-rooms again, when she had at last got an the oajrds ifor the other, and bigger game in her hands? It was puzzling; bat, then, so was the fact of her hampering her own movements to-night by keeping Neenah .8- with bier-unless, indeed, she wished to pre- vent the possibility of any communication with me. Well. the little Portuguese maid had seen to that. The widow Wedderbum should have taken the whole of her household with her! Those two hoars in the carriage went very slowly. Bloxham snored bravely on, and irritated me by not keeping time with the hoof- beats of the horses, which were now doing little more than a steady jog-trot. It was no use to tell the man to drive faster, for his cattle were tirel with thieir mad gallop into Lisbon, and couid not have done it. The only consolation was that Hetty's horses must be still more tired. We pulled up at last at Cascaes, and I woke Charlie. The driver ask-ed where he was to take us to. "We'll get out here," I and. "Oil, let him take us on to the' Bocca," said Charlie. "I'm dog-sleepy!" The Bocca was two miles further on; but, in spite of Charlie's yawnin-g protest, I in- sisted on walking. He let me have my way, but he grumbled sadly about those twowmiles. and asserted again airil again that he was sure that we should easily get there before the others; so that there was no need for being so confoundedly cautious, was there? That might be true; I was inclined to think it was true; but the calculation depended upon Hetty's having actually done something which we thought she must do. She had a way of upsetting calculations of thlat sort, and If we drove up carelessly to the Bocca, and found her pa-rty there in possession, the result would probably be a fight. For the issue between us had arrived at that stage when a blow comes sooner than a word; and, as Hetty probably believed that she had killed a man in our sight to-night already, she would stick at nothing to get us out of the way for an hour or two, so that she might dig up the treasure undisturbed, and then make her escape. Now I wae ready enough for a. fight at the proper time, and, in faot, rather looked forward to the chance of leaving my mark on that ugly Scotchman who had tipped me into the Tagus; but the prope" time was certainly not now, I when there was every possibility that Neenah might have to share the danger of a chance shot in the scrimmage. Poi, after ail, as I pointed out to Charlie, how did we know that they had not taken her with them to the Bw,, c a ? "If they have," he asked, as he tramped resignedly along the road, "shall you try to get her away?" "Well. yes!" I said with a laugh. "You may take it that I shall Did be suppose I should be willing tamely to leave her in their hands Of course, I would try to get her away "Then," he observed complacently, "If she is there, I think there's going to be a fight, you know. in any case." CHAPTER XIX. THE BOCCA Dt) INFERNO. The words Bocoa do Inferno mean, in Por- tuguese, the Mouth of Hell; and in a westerly storm I have seen too reason for the name. But to-night the atmosphere stood balanced in a breathless calm; and a. gentle swell, moving lazily on the Atlantic, rose and fell softly in the moonlight, as though it were no more than the rhythmic sleep-breathing which sltowed that the great, quiet ocean was, after all, no dead thing. The waves which rolled in through the arch of the Bocca were no more than shoulder high; and each one as it entered rose in a long even curl, which thiimed till the moonbeams shone through ita glistening edge, and then fell in a line of froth, like new milk. The place is a huge sea-cave, whose roof has been lifted bodily off, leaving only a narrow bridge over the arched entrance on the west. The floor of the cave is a confused mass of sharp tangled rocks, amongst which the water eddies and swirls incessantly; and even at the lowest tide only the jagged tops of its cruel teeth are uncovered. The limestone headland, of which this great pit forms a. part, is pierced throughout all its mass with narrow water-worn shafts, leading to the a.ir above; and when the Atlantic in its rage is sending in heavy billows from the westward, these shafts spout like thto blow-holes of a wounded whale, and the jets of water rise as giant fountains, to break in spray a hundred feet or more above. Then, indeed, the Bocca do Inferno does not belie its name. We stood on the platform of rook above, and gazed into the froth and bubble below us; for. though the night was still, the gentlest poise of the ocean ia enough tor raise an un- easy turmoil amongst these boulder teethl of Hell's Month. "The others haven't arrived yet," said Charlie. "AM we going down?" "We must." I said. "Neenah said that the place was the Bocca., and that must mean down there. The rocks up here are as bare as the back of your band; there's no place amongst them where treasure could lie hid even for a month, to say nothing of a hun- dred and something years. But down below there, under tha-t eoap-suddy stuff, it seems to me it could be hid very well." "So well*" agreed Charlie, with a laugh, "that I don't see how any man's going to find it. even if he knows to within a. yard where to look!" "A woman will," I said. "Wait and see." In calm weather there is one"way by which it is possible to descend from the cliffs above to the water-level. A cleft in the northern wall gives a precipitous path downwards, but the sides and floor of this cleft are worn smooth and treacherous by the water, which. except in the greatest, calms, dashes up it after the entrance of every wave through the archway. To-night it was practicable to the bottom, and Charlie and I made our way down until we met a ledge of rock which ran horizontally along the eastern wall, fronting the opening of the archway. We clambered aloug this ledge for about thirty yards, and found a plac? where we oould rest in the shadow of a spire-like pinnacle. "This will do," I said. "Now we can wait to receive callers!" The moon had sunk to within a few degrees of the horizon, and was shining in straight through the arch as through an open door. Outside she drew long path of flashing silver on the quiet surface of the waier. and the curl of every comber was outlined sharp like polished metal against her light. Inside she threw up the whole picture of pointed rocks and unquiet water in vivid contrasts of light and shade, so that, by a curious optical effect., the details of the scene apA* ared actually sharper than tlrey would have been if the full sunlight. If Hetty and her friends had any interesting work to do in this fairies' cavern, it would be easy enough for us to watch their every movement. "Tell you what!" said Bloxham presently. "The trouble will be paid for. even if they don't come. It's the prett-iest and about the eeriest soene I ever set eyes on. Sleepy, Del?" he added, with a yawn so luxuriously vocal that its echoes would have betrayed us at once bad there been any one within quarter of a mile to hear it. "No," I said. "But if you are, you can sleep, ril take the first watch." "Right!" he answered cheerfully, as he curled himself into a corner. "I'll take you at your word. Yon can waken me if you hear anything. Clap your hand over my mouth, and 111 promise to wake quietly." (To be continued on HondayJ
