THE CITY OF THE JUST..
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOINT AUTHOR OF" LADY DELMAR"). CHAPTER XI-Conti nu ed. The Barbed Hook. "I am delighted to hear you say so. I must own that it did appear to me that Dr. Eccles I was not wanting in assurance, but I felt certain that your duty, rector-your solemn duty to your charming daughter, who by the I way. is impressionable and romantic, would prevent any danger in that quarter." Mr. Winstaple threw the cheque over the table to the rector. "Oh, you may safely rely upon me, I give you my word for that. As you say, it will be as well to be cautious, not that I fear any daaiger, but one can never be too careful." The rector examined the cheque, folded it precisely, and placed it in his pocket-book. "Now I have no doubt that a little turn on the hills with the girls, or. perhaps, one of them"—Winstaple almost believed, he saw the rector wink—"just before dinner would not be disagreeable. We dine at six, un- usually early for you, I'm afraid, but still, if you prefer half-past or even seven, it could be managed." "Don't disturb yourself in the least. Your country ways are most delightful. I will find the young ladies somewhere, I daresay. Now don't trouble to follow me, I hate fuss, I really do. You have some letters to write. If you will excuse me, I will first take a light." Mr. Winstaple lit his cigar and went out. The rector took his pocket-book from his pocket and toyed with the cheque affec- tionately; he sat back in his easy chair. Yes, he was well satisfied with himself. He had done better than the others who had fought the battle of the Church before; he did not go begging for subscriptions as nearly all did, he did not suffer himself to be defeated for want of the sinews of war. When the pinch came he put his shoulders to the wheel and m v>ie what he wanted. Mackonoehie, Pur- chase, Green were great men, no doubt, great and stubborn soldiers who fought with valour; but where in the whole history of the Church had there been found such a combination of talent as he possessed? A firm man, who stood by his guns with resolution; a mail of piety—everyone must admit that—and learn- ing. True, be had taken no great honours at Oxford, but those were gained simply by cram- ming, they disclosed no great talent or intel- lect. And then, added to that a man of dis- cernment—a financier, yes, really a great financier—as Winstaple had said more than once; a man who, had he not been wedded to his holy vocation, would have rivalled the old Rothschilds in his money-making capacity. "You can see through a brick wall further j than any man I know," the broker had re- marked once, and the rector had taken it for a great compliment. Yes, there wag no doubt of it, he was a born financier. Here were five hundred pounds—less the discount, of course —and what had he done for it? Nothing, ex- cept the giving of some advice, advice which such a hard-headed man as Winstaple was. had evidently thought of great value. He was a pioneer, he might almost say, of one of the greatest companies that had ever been I started. Was it possible to imagine that a I man such as he was could be defeated by the riff-raff which had called upon him the other j day, even if they were backed up by the Church Association, which he very much j doubted ? He would send the cheque to the i bank—it was more than enough for his pre- sent needs—and then he would write a letter, with an enclosure, to his lawyers, which be flattered himself would startle these gentle- men not a little. Mr. Winstaple had experienced no difficulty in finding the girls. He proposed a walk, and it was with regret that he heard Bob assent 1 to accompany. He had hoped that as he had 1 to accompany. He had hoped that as he had suggested a brisk climb over the mountains her lameness would have stood in the way. "You are sure you will not be too fatigued?" he had said. "Not in the least. We always go together, don't we, Winnie ? Besides, I am really a good walker; my lameness scarcely affects me, and with the help of my stick I get along very well." There was nothing for it. "We were not aware you were coming to us again so soon, Mr. Winstaple," Bob re- marked coldly. Business, Miss Stepney. Business is an exacting taskmistress, but in this case, I assure you, the pleasure of the visit more than compensates." "You must find us dull company after the pleasures of London," said Winifred. "Dull, Miss Winifred? in a half inerroga- tive tone. "I rather fancy Adam never found it dull in the Garden of Eden when Eve pre- sided," and he cast a glance of admiration, which brought a blush on the fair cheek of Winifred. "I have always imagined that Eve-that is, modern Eve—lived in London, and that she decked herself iu jewels and silks and satins, and drove in a carriage and pair." "I agree with you; that is the proper sphere of Eve. There she looks at her best. Rustic, I mean primitive Eve, captivates, no doubt; but to see her in her glory you must see her in the Row, or in a ball-room, or at the opera, vanquishing with her beauty wherever she goes. It pains me to see a really beautiful woman wasting away the best years of her life amidst hedges and fields and cows and what not," and again he looked at Winifred. I prefer the country. I love our mountains and our rivers; I could never do without them," put in Bob almost fiercely. "Yes. But, Bob dear, London must be very nice just for a change; you know." "But not to lead that life. What can wealth do to compensate for a contented mind, for happiness? It seems to me people are always craving for the flowers they have not got, and when they get them they find them full of thorns." Bob hurried her step a little; she was getting angry; she saw the serpent. "I never found anyone discontented with wealth," remarked Winstaple. "There are troubles everywhere, no doubt, I have my anxieties and my cares, but I cannot say but that fat sorrow is better than lean. Besides, when you are rich you can assist your friends, and I am sure there is no greater pleasure than that. The rector, for instance Bob stopped and turned round suddenly, cutting short the remark. The purchase was arauged then, and the price was being paid. Winifred did not understand. Winataple was sharp enough to see he had made a faux pas; Lhe retreated. "If ever I should marry," he went on, "that is, marry a girl to whom I could give my whole heort, the great happiness of my life would be to suround her with every luxury. What. ever toubles I had she should never know them; her path should be a path of roses." The broker was getting out of his depth; poetry was not in his line. Bob laughed maliciously. maliciously. "You would buy your wife, Mr. Winstaple, as you.would a fine horse or a dog; and YOU would expect nothing of her but to look beau- tiful cvatl ty mutt your friends cuviousr'' "You are unjust, Miss Stepney. Eve, as Wit said just now, was not made to 'bear burden of life. It is the duty of Adam to do all the work and to carry the load. and r would only do my duty." "I have never been to London. I suppose it, must be very lovely," remarked Winifred. with a hazy sort of notion that she would like the conversation changed. "It is really too bad of the rector to keep you locked up here; he is so full of his missioit and his church duty that he forgets that his daughters have grown up. and have wings of their own and wish to fly. I shall have to give him a. hint. Besides, he must run up to the city himself shortly. Ah, now it strikes me that would be a splendid opportunity; what do you say, Miss Stepney, to a month in Lon- don, say nest month? It will be only the beginning of the winter season, true; but. there is a good deal to see and do." "It would be quite impossible," replied Bob. "On, Bob, wouldn't it be nice?" said Wini. fred, brightening up. "It would be quite impossible." we could easily." "Why? If father agreeQ-oh. Bob, I'm sure we could easily." "However could we go without spending a' lot of money in dresses and all that sort of thing, and you know father said the other day there must be no extravagance." "Since that time. Miss Stepeny, many things have happened. Now, if you will only say yes, I'll engage to get the rector's consent." But Bob had no intention of saying yes. and, moreover, she saw that things were taking a. turn which necessitated that Winifred should be warned as to what was being done, and ebe resolved to open the girl's eyes that very even- ing. | Mr. Winstaple felt that the resistance was very decided. He would have no accomplice in Bob, that was certain. She evidently waa fully alive to his intentions, and to some extent had divined his methods. Propitiation Vas useless. He must overturn the obstacle by main force. "Miss Stepeny has evidently a pious horror of Londoners, although," he added smiling, "we are not so bad as we are painted. We have our faults, I own, but we have our virtues also. Now one of our very particular virtues is that when we have set our hearts on any- thing we stick at nothing in winning success," and he looked straight at Bob. who returned the glance with defiance in her eyes. "If a man stands in my path I sweep him away. However, this is only a little matter. I have set my heart on your visiting London"—to Winifred—"and it shall be managed, I give you my word for it; that is, of course, if you care to go." "My sister. Mr. Winstaple, would, I am sure, do nothing that I should not approve of." Bob would carry resistence to the end. "But, Bob dear, it isn't wicked to spend a, month in London, is it?" "That depends upon circumstances." "I will just speak to the rector about it, said Mr. Winstaple. "I dare say he will be able to overcome Miss Stepney's objections. There is much to be seen in London which, everyone ought to see, if only for once .0 their lives." "My sister will discover all that in dtio time; and as for myself, I am content, quite content as I am; with the farm and garden, and the poor and my books, my time is fully occupied." "But, Bob, just think of it; we should see London, and we should go to a theatre, and to Westminster Abbey, and oh, to lots of things. I'm sure it's very kind of Mr. Win- staple to think of it. Change your mind, Bobby. D'you really think, Mr. Winstaple, father could afford it. and let us go? Would it cost a very great deal of money?" The broker looked maliciously at Bob. Bob was furious. "It's quite useless to talk about it, I know it is." "Oh, dear no," said the broker, answering Winifred end ignoring Bob's remark. "It would not be the slightest inconvenience to> the rector; travelling is so very cheap nowa- days, and then I have friends who I am sure would oblige me with boxes or stalls at any theatre you might wish to go to; and you might do a good deal of your year's shop- ping. It is extraordinary what one can save by shopping in the metropolis; everything is so much cheaper and in the latest faehion." Bob looked upon the ground and made no remark; she could not trust herself to speak. Winifred was trying to consider how much better she might do with her allowance of twelve pounds a year for dress if she were to spend it in London. "And then, Bobby, you see we might go up third-class; everyone goes third-class nowa- days." "You won't go third or any other class, was the only answer Bob vouchsafed. "I will speak to the rector this very evening'. eh, Miss Winifred? Nothing in this world T should enjuy more than the privilege of show- ing you the sights of London. I will under- take to devote myself for a whole week to you, to be your most obedient slave." Mr. Winstaple bowed profoundly, raised his. hat. and again ignored Bob. "We will turn back now; it's getting rather chilly," said Bob suddenly. "So pray don't; I'm sure it's quite safe. I am enjoying this walk immensely," answered the broker. It was open war now. There was no mie. take whatever. Bob put her arm through Winifred's without replying. Winifred was too accustomed to accept the direction of her sister to rebel. She turned. Winstaple was perforce compelled to do the same. How- ever, Winifred's persistence in not agreeing with Bob about the proposed visit to London. gave him hopes that the influence of the elder sister was not so great as he had imagined. This visit to London would be an excellent opportunity. He flattered himself that he would during that time give Winifred such a taste of London life that she would not care to settle down in the country afterwards. "What, returned already!" said the rector. "I thought you would have remained out. I until nearly dinner time." "Miss Stepney was afraid of a chill," replied the broker. Bob ought not to have gone; she is still very delicate, and this brisk air of October i» not quite the thing for her." "We were just saying that a visit, to London during the autumn would be a most desirable change. What do you say, rector? We shall want you at the first Silver Streak meeting to represent the shareholders, and a month in town—eh?" "That requires consideration," replied Mr. Stepney, who did not at the moment catch the purport of the move. Bob, still holding Winifred by the arm. half- dragged her towards the house. The broker would have prevented, but there was no Obvious way of doing so. Bob looked at him with a flash of scorn in her eves, which stopped him for a moment. Come, she whisprred in her sister's ear; and in a moment, before he could recover the situation, the broker was t'tt alone ou the path with the rector. "Come." said Hob on the stairs, "come!" And when they were alone in the room. and the door was locked, she bnaH into tcHijj. (To be rozLtjaue4 ..r-
