The weather prevailing at the time of the observation is noted in words printed in small type for the same localities as those for which the temperatures are entered. The condition of the sea is given in capital letters. Occasionally a few words are added to the top of the chart, exp.anatory of important phenomena which have occurred since the previous niornins'. REMARKS ON THE WEATHER. METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE, July 15th, 8 a.m. Weather remains dull and gloomv over Gre;,t Briiai;i and France this morning, with rain at a few stations in Ireland, however, the weather is fair, and in the Netherlands fine and bright. Rain fell in the north-east and south-east yesterday, and over our inland northern counties severe thunderstorms occurred. At Lutterworth more than an inch and a half of raiu fell in the course of 30 minutes," during a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Temperature shows some tendency to increase at our western and north-western sta- tions, but has fallen a little at some of the western ports and is still very low for the time of year all over our islands. The present readings vary from 51 degrees at our most northern stations to 56 de- grees in the south-west and 58 degrees in the south-east; the maximum readings yesterday varied from 60 degrees to G3 degrees over Eng- land generally, but 65 degrees was recorded at York. Wind is light northerly to north-westerly all over England and Ireland, north-easterly in Scotland. In France and Holland it is W to S.W., and blows a fresh to strong breeze in the Bay of Biscay. Sea is high at Rochefort and Toulon, moderate to small elsewhere. BAROMETRICAL INDICATIONS.—The depression noticed in our eastern counties yesterday is now off our east coast, and the barometer is rising over nearly the whole of our island. In the south-west of Ireland, however, it seems incline! to fall a little. The changes in pressure are still far from being indicative of settled weather, though a temporary improvement is likely in most places. Two P.M.—No important change has occurred since the morning.

THE REPRESENTATION OF CARDIGANSHIRE.
THE REPRESENTATION OF CARDIGANSHIRE. [FROM A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. 1 The state of politics in Cardiganshire may seem to,be a little mixed to those who have only seen the statements aad letters which have appeared in newspapers; also a little mysterious. I shall therefore try to make the hole matter a little clearer. You stated, a year ago. that the Liberal party had resolved to invite Col. Pryse, the Lord- Lieutenant., to content the :C;tt in tho Liberal interest. That statement was perfectly true, aud there was every reason to believe that if he ac- cepted the invitation, he would lead the party t,) a certain victory. He was, in fact, the safest man the Liberals had. As a politician he was well-known, having represented for some year the Cardig-an Boroughs in Parliament while his near connecti on with the old family of Gogerddan—who have so often roused the enthu- siasm of the Cardiganshire Liberals-hi-i known uprightness in all pnblic capacities, and his moderate views upon ecclesiastical matters, pointed him out as the most likely man to unite the party. Colo cl Pryse, ho ever, after earnest ennsi leration of the proposals made to him, determined not to stand. There were private reasons why he wished to avoid the principal part in a fierce and exciting contest and, in addi- tion, there were political questions on which he was not iu accord with the Liberal Association. The gal- lant colonel, however, though he would have been as proud as any man could be to represent his county in Parliament, generously forbore to in- terfere in the slightest degree with the views of the Association, and he retired, assuring them of his desire to assist the Liberal cause so far as he could consistently do so. The executive of the Liberal Association thereupon met at Lampeter in April, 1879, and unanimously resolved to invite Mr Lewis Pugh Pugh, of Abermaide, to become their candidate. Mr Pllgh, who was preseri4 at the meeting, before accepting the invitation, very reasonably asked to be informed how much support he was likely to re- ceive from every polling district, and the general secretary of the Association at once set to work to obtain for him that information. In this work of inquiry some considerable time elapsed, and not a few Cardiganshire L:berals having heard nothing of Air Pugh's acceptance of the candidature, began to suspect that he was playing the part of the "laggard in love." Those ideas spread abroad, and by the ordinary current of common gossip reached the ears of Mr Arthur Williams, barrister-at-law of the South Wales circuit. That gentleman having the honourable and noble ambition of working in the political world, and of helping forward the Liberal cause, of which he is a sincere adherent, made inquiries, and the result was this :-He found a considerable feeling of soreness at Mr Pugh's delay in accepting the invitation; and further, he discovered that there was a section of the Liberal party who did not very heartily support Mr Pugh, because he was not content to go quite so far as they did on the question of Disestablishment. Upon this, Mr Arthur Williams determinel to make per. sonal inquiries, and in the end he issued a "private aud confidential address" to some of the leading Liberals, intimating that he wtu at their service, and expressing pronounced Liber.J views both on general politics and on religious questions. It so happenod that on the day, or the day before, Mr Williams's address came out, the secretary of the Liberal Executive had written to Mr Pugh, sending him the result of the inquiries made in the various polling dis- tricts, and iufcrming him that if the party was united they could return him by a majority of 300 votes. As soon as Mr Williams's address ap- peared, the secretary of the Liberal Executive wrote to Mr Williams acquainting him of the exact state of affairs in Cardiganshire, and Mr Williams, after some consultation with his friends, withdrew his address, and one cannot say that he withdrew from the field, for he had never been in the field but he withdrew from the tentative position which, for a very short period, he had occupied. Mr Lewis Pugh also v. rote, cordially accepting the invitation to contest the county, and the Executive Committee of the Liberal Association thereupon met and formally adopted him as their candidate. This, I believe, is the true history of the events of the past twelve months, There has been no "split in the camp," nor have there been two Richmonds in the field." Mr Arthur Williams has only played an honourable and gentlemanly part, and Mr Lewis Pugh did not delay his acceptance of the candida- ture a day longer than was necessary to enable him to receive the information from the polling districts, information which he was fairly entitled to before coming to a decision. The Liberal party can return Mr Pugh if they be united and the question may be asked, will they unite ? It is well to look difficulties in the face, for, on the one hand, there is a section of the constituency which goes in very distinctly for Disestablishment and Disendowment; and on the other hand, Mr Lewis Pugh is not a pronounced Liberationism What his views are on this matter I am not prepared to say he will shortly have an opportunity of expounding them to the elec- tors. A feeling of considerable soreness exists on this point, but I am in a position to say that a sort of compromise has been effected, and the whole Liberal party will, it is hoped and believed, unite and work together in turning out the Tory Mr Lloyd, and putting in the Liberal Mr Pugh. Apart altogether from disestablish- ment, this will be a distinct gain to the Liberal- ism of the country, and an intelligible step in advance for Cardiganshire. While every advocate of disestablishment will sorely regret this state of things, they will recognize that it will be advisable to wrest the seat from the Tories, and then when disestablishment becomes a practical question, make terms with their Member, whoever he may be. The state of affairs, so far as I can ascertain them, is this Cardiganshire is, no doubt, a Non- conformist county. It is also the county which supplies the greatest number of clergymen to the Church in Wales, and very manv o^the electors have a clergyman belonging to the family. In 1874, when Mr E. AI. Richards came out for the first time, distinctly and emphatically, us an ad- vocate of disestablishment in England, the ques- tion was not at all relished by many of those who returned him triumphantly in 1868. At the same election the powerful interest of the Bronwydd and Gogerddan families, v ith that of a number of smaller ones, was entirely alienated from the Liberal cause, on account of Mr Richards's advocacy of disestablishment. These great families were neutral they stood apart from the battle, and the battle was lost. They wonld do so again under similar circumstances, and the battle would be lost again. On the other hand, the advocates of Disestablishment are strong enough to ensnre the failure of Mr Pugh if they choose to oppose him. As. therefore, neither party is able to carry its views into effect in the present state of politics, an earnest aud, I believe, successful endeavour has been made to effect a compromise, and win the seat for the Liberal party, securing a Liberal vote on practical Liberal questions upon which they can agree, and defer- ring all other questions upon which they cannot agree until they come before the country in a practical shape. Mr Lewis Pugh is a "thorough" Liberal he will have the support of the powerful families who in 1874 were neutral the registration has been well looked after by Mr Thomas Harries, of Llechryd, and if the party will unite to turn out the common enemy, of retrenchment, of freedom, and of all reforms, the representative of tlie com- mon enemy, MrT. E. Lloyd, M.P., will certainly be defeated at the next election.
THE ENGL H','-BA P'I'IST CHURCH,…
THE ENGL H'BA P'I'IST CHURCH, CARMARTHEN. For years, those who dhered to the polity of the Baptist denomination at Carmarthen, but who did not understand Welsh, were compelled to worship ahiong the congregations of other Non- conformist bodies. At last a movement was ma,le to form an English church, and an elegant chapel was erected in Lammas-street. The Rev. Evan Thomas was the first minister, and after be. tween three or four years' pastorate, Air Thomas severed his connection with the Carmarthen church. Great regret was expressed, and a hand- some testimonial was presented to him Now that Mr Thomas is so ill that his recovery is more than questionable, not a few of his former people but feel unfeigned sympathy with him in Io!" T! After an interval of weekly supplies, the Rev. W. M. Lewis was invited to the Church. He accepted the call, and some 12 months' ago resigned. Since then, the church has been de- pendent on supplies. At the commencement of this year, Air Thomas Thomas, of Bristol Col- lege, took a Sunday, and his ministration pleased the congregation. In Alarch, he again preached at Carmarthen, and in June he received the call of the church, and entered upon its ministry. On Tuesday, Air Thomas was ordained and formally recognised as the pastor of the church. At half- past two in the 'afternoon. Rev. G. H. Roberts, conducted; and there were present, among others, the Mayor (Mr R. W. Richards), the Rev. Richard Solomon (Congregational), and the Rev. J, Lloyd. Several members of other denominations were among the congrega- tion. The^ new pastor, declaring his re- ligious convictions and his theological opinions, declared himself as emphatically a Baptist—not a Baptist first and a Christian after, nor yet a Christian first and a Baptist after. He was a Baptist because he was a Christian, and because he believed it to be Christlike. The Rev. B. 1 nomas, of Narberth, delivered a charge to the pastor, founding his remarks upon 2ud Cm inthians, 2nd chap., 15th and IGth versps, and the 5th verse of the 3rd cilap., same epistle. The Rev. E. Thomas, of Newport, Mon., delivered the charge to the church, taking as his text, 1st Thesse- lonians, Oth chap., 12th and 13th verses. Sermons were preached m the evening by the Rev. E. Ihomas and the Rev. B. Thomas.
