THE CARNARVON BOROUGHS ELECTION.
THE CARNARVON BOROUGHS ELECTION. On Wednesday morning last, the Mayor of Carnarvon (Lewis Lewis, Esq.), sat at the Guild Hall to receive nominations of candidates for the representation of the Carnarvon Boroughs in Parliament. Mr W. Bulkeley Hughes, M P., who has sat for these boroughs for the last 37 years, was proposed by Mr James Rees, Castle-stieet, Carnarvon, and seconded by Mr Hugh Pugh, Llysmeirion. At one o'clock, the time having expired for receiving nominations, and no other gentleman having been proposed, the Mayor declared Mr W. Bulkeley Hughes re-el oted. Mr Bulkelsy Hughes, in returning thank- for the honour of being returned unopposed, said that during the great length of time he had represented these boroughs he had performed his duties con- sistently. He felt those duties become more arduous from day to day and from year to year as he went on. But we were all disposed to try and do our duty. The energy of most of them was strong and the good intentions of most of them were such as to do their best for the good of their country. He was satisfied that whoever was in power their object would be to do their duty. and that they all aspired to that object. He had no doubt that he had fallen short of his duties, and all that he could say was that he had always en- deavoured to do his duty rightly (hear, hear). Referring to the length of time he had served for these boroughs he said he had still sufficient energy and determination to carry ou his arduous task. In conclusion, he thanked them for the honour they had done him in returning him as their member. The hon. gentleman then pro- posed a vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding, remarking that he was sure they would all be glad to accord a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Lewis, who had presided over the nomination for the space of three hours. The proposition was se- conded by Mr Rees and carried unanimously.- The Mayor, in acknowledging the compliment, said he hoped Mr Bulkeley Hughes would live many years to represent them in Parliament, and if ever Mr Hushes was called upon to contest the seat that he wo aid always oomu oil victorious, ani that he would eventually die in harness (applause). 1 1

The Panama Star and Herald of the 18th inst., which has been received here, states that the Government of Panama have asked the United States Consul in that city for information regarding the surveys of the Cherique Lagoon by an American man-of-war. The Consul has replied that he knows nothing about the surveys in question, but will refer the correspondence on the subject to his Government for instructions. An address has been issued by the Far- mers' Alliance to the tenant-farmers of the United Kingdom, which says :—" You, the farmers of the United Kingdom, have to a considerable extent the power of determining the character of the next Parliament, and if you will act together and make your wishes known you will go far to secure a majority in the House of Commons in favour of redressing agricultural wrongs. Very few of the sitting county members have proved themselves deserving of your confidence. Your interest^ have been persistently neglected, and it is time for you to show by your votes that you can- not be treaded in this way with impunity. Let every candidate understand that he will not have your vote unless he distinctly pledges himself to attend to your just and reasonable demands. What has been done for you during the past six years ? The Cattle Diseases Act was granted after long resistance to your demands, and every one must admit that it has acted beneficially. The relief granted to local taxation has been more than counterbalanced by additional burdens. The Agricultural Holdings Act is generally admitted to be nearly useless; county Government is as it was, the land and game laws are as yet unaltered, and the law of distress has not been dealt with. If you had been represented in Parliament by real farmers' friends,' your position to-day would have been very different from what it is. The result of the impending election will decide the question whether your interests are to be attended to or neglected, probably for some years to come. You have to meet a great and increasing competi- tions, and you may reasonably demand that all laws and conditions which impede the free conduct of your business should be swept away. Then do not give away your votes from either fear or favour. Whatever may be said to the contrary, the Ballot does ensure absolute secrecy to the voter. The interests of the whole people depend to a great extent upon the prosperity of agricul- ture, and it is you who best understand how that prosperity can be promoted."
