THE carrying trade of this country still con- JL tinues to increase, and there is every prospect that for many yea a to come there wil! he employment for all available vessels on terms equally advantageous to those at preser t current. J Shipping props rty has long been a most remuner- ative investment Steamships especially have been earning very large dividends, paying their shareholders fully 20, and 'n some eases as nmchaaPO per cent. This ka3 besn done with freights at about their present rates, a j that eyen better results may with confidence be; anticipated when commerce resumes its activity. The fol!own? are extracts from The Steamshijs of lat Jaicary md 15,:h Jane, 1883:- "The next point that strikes ns is the almost nn:. formly high .ate of interest received from investments in privftte-o vned Steamers." "Some piy as much as 25 and even 30 per cent, per annum, bn♦ we are told that» fair average ill round in "Some piy as much as 25 and even 30 per cent, per annum, !-nt we are told that a fair average ill round in respect of Lil Steamers now in proper working order would be represented by 18 to 20 per cent, per annum. These payments are as a rule made without any pro- vision for depreciation or a reserve fund to meet any I large expanse, such as the purchase of a new boler, or expenses of a similar kind, so that some deduction must be msie for these purpose?, the acini value of the saip itss appreciation, being coverea by .nsurittice." "73ut allowing for these deductions, we think that we ire well within the mark in saying that private- owaea Steamers present a sound investment, pro- dr cing on an average a fair net dividend of 12 to 15 per cf at. on the capital expended, &o. "Mejet of our Steamships ia this country are yet 'iveragiDg from 19 to 20 per cent.'in profits in some in- stances we can point to Companies that are fairly and honestly paying a good 30 per cent, dividend annually, and while this sort of thing exists the future of both ateaaa tonnage as a safe investment and of iron ship- building as a steady industry is assured." lha Company is formed with the intention of carry- ing on the business of Shipowning in all ita branches. and its proper ty will be employed where the most beneficial results may be anticipated. Care will also be taken to select for investment of the Company's fnnds such class of Shipping property as experience shows to be most remunerative. Opportunities frequently occur when investments may, on very beneficial terms, be mada on mortgage or otherwise, on the seenrity of shipping property. Powers have, therefore, been taken for this purpose, and also for freighting any of the C .mpany's vesssels, should circumstances render such. a course likely to be of advantage. It is comtemplated to insure the pro- perty of the Company with high.ch.S;3 underwriters against all the usual risks. No promotion money will ba paid, and only the actual expenses incurred in organizing the Company will be charged. THE PROPOSED RAILWAY TO LLANDINOR!P…
THE PROPOSED RAILWAY TO LLANDINOR!P 10. It is said that seven cities contended for the honour of ben.g considered the birth- place of Homer, and that the contest was conducted wito extreme rancour and bitter- ness. We have had this week the spectacle presented to us of two cities, or rather one city and do town, contending for the honour of being connec bed with the thriving village of Liandinorwic by a line of railway. In the ancient instance honour alone may be supposed to have been the incentive to the struggle, but in the modem contention mutual profit is tirgei as well as honour. As profit, after all, is the touchstone by which all commorcial transactions are in these nineteenth century days tested, we may in this case ignore the claims of honour, and regard with a steadfast eye the main chance. That is to say, the residents at Llandinorwic ought so to regard the question. To them the "honour of being connected with either town is a bauble, not worthy of a moment's consideration. The question is, which will pay best, and those most interested in the question should be careful that no dust is thrown into their eyes by sounding phrases meaning nothing. Two deputations have waited upon the villagers, in council assembled, and laid before them the advantages to be derived from a connection made between the two towns. B.;ngor, which, as having been first on the field may be considered first, dwells much on the fact that by construct- ing the proposed new line so as to join the Bethesda branch, speedy access via Bangor to Chester, Liverpool, and Manchester would be secured, and, besides the blessings of education, as to be provided by the col- lege, would be within easy reach of all who could afford to avail themselves of these advantages. These are the advantages claimed for what may be called the Bangor route. There are sarious financial difficnl- ties to be considered by those who will, if the line is ever made, be called on to bear the expenses. The distance, it is stated,^ia nearly twice as great by the route between L!andinorwic and Bangor as it is between that village and the point of junction at Pontrhythallt. Again, the Bangor route ia threatened with the opposition of one at l?aat of the great land- owners, and, it is rumoured, by the London and North Western Railway Company also. On behalf of the alternative route, the deputation from Carnarvon informed the meeting convened ia the village last Mon- day night that they were prepared to offer equal, if not superior, educational induce- ments, far greater facilities in the way of construction, and to assure them of an entire absence of opposition in constructing the line so as to j "in the Llaaberis Rail- way at Pontrythallt. The Carnarvon otTor thus has both positive and negative advantageb of the most weighty character, especially when considered from a financial point of view. The length of line to be constructed would he less, and so, of course, would the cost. There are besides two con- siderations which have not, as yet been urged. As Captain Stewart said in his speech on Mono ay night, the force of old association counts for something in these matters, and it is between Carnarvon that for generations the business of the village has dbbtd and flowed, and a disturbance of these old ties ought not to be lightly made. Connections have been made, and fostered, and matured between the two places, and a sudden transference of the business hitherto conducted between the two places toBangor, cannot fail to prove harmful to those who risk it, and this is especially the case when the old friend offers all and more than the new friend" which has so suddenly stepped forward to claim the attention of Llandinorwic people. As to the educational facilities claimed by Bangor they are not of the kind most urgently needed. Before the higher, intermediate education ought to come, and Carnarvon will before long be in a position to çffer to the working and middle classes of Llan- dinorwic and neighbouring villages the solid and necessary advantages of a middle class school, in addition to the advan- tages already enumerated. On the whole, we consider that the advantages to be derived by the village from a line of rail- way eonnecting Llandinorwic with Carnar- von are greater than those to be obtained from a junction with the Bethesda branch, while the expenses smd difficulties of the former route are infinitely lees. ————mm
