To these I have been unable to reply, first because I did not know what Professor Loisette's Method might be, and secondly because the letters reached me in too great abundance. But, wishing to respond to these correspondents, I have taken advantage of the period of rest from travel recently enjoined me to examine thoroughly the Loisettian System. I have not been content to try it in my own case only, but, knowing how greatly memories differ in quality, I have made the inquiry in company with two rela- tives, whose powers of memory are very different from mine-in some points superior, in others I think not quite so good. The result in every case has been to confirm fully what my friend Dr. Andrew Wilson has said respecting the System. Whether regarded as a device for memorising, or in its more important aspect as a System of memory. training, Professor Loisette's Method appears to mi admirable. I have tested it in my own case on those matters in which my memory is least trust- worthy. perhaps because least exercised: and I have been surprised to End how easily and pleasantly I can fix such matters in my mind. almost without an effort, yet in such a way that I am satisfied they are there for good. My two companions in the inquiry have had in one sense the same experience, in another sense an experience entirely different; they have tested the tern on entirely different subjects, but with the .-nnio satisfactory results. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending the System to all who arc ill earnest in wishing to train their memories effectively, and are therefore willing to take reasonable pains to obtain so useful a. result* —R, A. PBOCTOB.
OVER TIIE SUNSHINE OF EXISTENCE…
OVER TIIE SUNSHINE OF EXISTENCE HANGS A BLACK CLOUD. With the uncertainty of life is mingled the dark mys- tery of death 1 While, on the one hand, we catch the welcome sound of a new breath of life that tells of an .•uw lii a to our species, on the other we shudder as we h r die rushing wings of the Destroying Angel! The u;;gi.ty voice of the Great Influence which rules the L diverse has pronounced our fate; the dread fiat has gone forth. and every mortal man is doomed tw die But. though we cannot prevent, can we postpone death? L':K' question is momentous, even if it concern the pro- longation of life but by a single hour, inasmuch as every insuuet prompts us to fight the boldest battle we can for this glorious boon of existence. The promptings of instinct are but the spontaneous voices of nature, and it is our duty to obey. But there still remains the question, can death be postponed by a single hour ? Yes; for the world works in obedience to certain laws and a study of these proves that those who have the judgment and the will to buckle on the shield, which nature places ready to their grasp, may ward off the insidious attacks of the i-nplacable enemy of life, until, in a ripe old age, the vital faculties gradually decay, and the Angel of Peace glides softly into our presence, leading ns, as it were, in a gentle slumber to the regions beyond the thadow of the tomb. The Fell Destroyer makes his first approaches in many forms, but none are more favoured by him than that of a deadly foe now preying upon the very vitals of Modern Society. What is this foe ? There are few among us who have not been or are now to some extent its victims. Would the reader know if he. too. is under the ban of this frightful scourge ? Let him ask himself whether he experiences any of the following symptoms There are pains about the chest and sides, and some- times in the back. The mouth has a bad taste, especially in the morning; and there are feelings of dulness and drowsiness. The appetite is poor. a sort of sticky slime collects about the teeth, there is a feeling as of a heavy load on the stomach, and sometimes a faint, all-gone sensation at the pit of the stomach, which food does not satisfy. The eyes are sunken, the hands and feet be- come cold and feel clammy. After a while a cough sets in. at first dry, but attended in the course of a few months with expectoration of a greenish colour. The sufferer feels constantly tired, and sleep seems to atford him no rest. Nervousness, irritability. ;and evil fore- bodings follow. When rising suddenly, there is a giddiness, a sort of whirling sensation in the head. The bowels become costive the skin is dry and hot at times: the blood becomes thick and stagnant; the whites of the eyes are tinged with yellow: the urine is scanty and high coloured, depositing a sediment after standing. There is frequently a spitting up of the food—at times with a sour taste and at others with a sweetish taste. This is often attended with palpitation of the heart or impaired vision, with spots before the eyes, accompanied by great pros (ration and weakness. All of these symptoms are in turn present. It is thought that nearly one-third of our population has this disease in some of its varied forms. Medical men have mistaken the nature of the malady. Its true name is Dyspepsia or Indigestion for which a certain remedy is to be found in Mother Seigel s Curatiw Syrup—a medicine which has won in both hemispheres it confidence founded only on its great virtues. The Syrup can be obtained from any chemist or medicine vendor, or from the proprietors, A. J. WHITE (Limited), 17, Farringdon Road, London, E.C.
WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY.
WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY. TOUR PREPARATION IS AN EXCEPTION. The Pharmacy. Regent Road, Great Yarmouth, Dec. 28th, 1882 Dear Sir,- Y our medicine must be a great success You can quite understand that I have not much opinion of what are called quack medicines, which are generally cure all and worthless, and I should be glad to see them swept out of existence with the" bosom of destruc- tion." Your preparation, however, is an exception, and is undoubtedly useful. One of my brothers took it with considerable benefit and, to be candid with you, I only laughed at him, and said, "His faith had healed him." I was very ill myself this year with Congested Liver, Indigestion, &c., and after much persuasion by mv brother, to please him, I consented to try Mother Seigel's Syrup, and I am bound to say, that in spite of my pre- judice and unbslief, it did me more good than anything else. I am better in health now. but not quite well, and probably never shall be again, as my heart lias become weak, although I am considerably under fifty years of age. I mention my case to you, thinking it mis^ht be of some interest to you.—I remain, faithfully yours, ,Y. Sheppard Pole (Ph. C.)." I HAVE NOT HEARD A SINGLE COMPLAINT. (,,eutlenieu,-Pet-haps it would be appropriate to state, that it gives me great pleasure to push and advance the sales of your medicines, on account of their worth. I have not had or heard a single complaint about your medicines, since I have sold them, but, on the other hand, unbounded testimony as to their worth, therefore I can with confidence bring them to the public notice. During 18S2 I sold llj dozens of the Syrup, and 71 4 dozen Pills. This, I think, taking into account that the inhabitants are under 2,000 and there are two other agents in the town, will give you a good idea as to how it is appreciated here.—Faithfully yours, II. J. Izzard. Pat. Med. Vendor." ITS EFFICACY IS ACKNOWLEDGED BY THOUSANDS. Heglier Town. Berckfastleigli. December 21st, 1883. "Gentlemen,—It gives me uufeigned pleasure to bear testimony to your remedies for the many ills that flesh is heir to. Of all the medicines I dispense, I know of none superkmr to yours for all internal bodily ailments. Al- though Seigel's Syrup is a patent medicine,' and, con- sequently, despised and maligned by the Faculty, there is no sham about it, and its efficacy is acknowledged by thousands of sufferers, and its sale does not dimmish, which is about as good a barometer as any I know. —I HIll, yours most respectfully, ".J. lieed, Chemist."

u AMLWCH. RuFfiAMS-M.—It is a shame and disgrace to those who profess to maintain order in this town that iher do not enforce some definite measure to put down ihe street ruffianism that prevails here of an evening. Undoubtedly, it would be a great satisfaction to many if the police would endeavour to bring these half-civilised creatures to justice.-Cor.

SMALL BEGINNINGS AXD GREAT ENDINGS.—It is a trite remark that it is better to begin in a small wav, and en- large in a steady and healthy manner, than to atteinut too much and fail. But trite as the remark is. it be a-s the impress of truth. No matter how smail the begin- ning* if there is real worth at bottom, the results will be all that can be hoped for. Let the history of Jlollowav's celebrated Pills and Ointment illustrate this point. In London he commenced the manufacture of his Pills. He mixed the ingredients and rolled the Pills with his own hands. Their sale at first was small, but as their efficacy became known it increased, at first slowly, then more rapidly, until now the demand for them has become so great that the iron muscles of the steam engine are called into requisition to grind up and mix enough to supply the increasing calls for them—calls which come from all parts of the world.—This success which has rendered Hulloway famous is well deserved, as thousands of grate- ful hearts in every nook and corner of the globe w ill heartily attest. In no part, however, are thev n., justly appreciated than in South and Central America where their comprehensiveness, as well as the stro-vth of their remedial properties, have been most severely tired. When winter sits enthroned among the Andes," when torrid summer evokes disease and death from the marshes near the coast, and when eternal spring beautifies the table lands, they have been administered with equal and invariable success to all classes, colours, and conditions. To the superficial thinker it seems inexplicable that The same medicine should cure diseases whicil b,-ar no similarity to each other. We believe, however, that a sound philosophical reason has been given for ;h0 phenomenon. Symptoms differ, but they are the aj'ecis of disease, not its cause. The cans, it is artie(i is a morbid and poisonous principle in the blood, which HLlY be of greater or less intensity, but is always the same in its nature, and therefore always controllable by the same means. The great difficult,)' was to discover and preuare the true remedy—a difficulty which Holloway hus~Wr- mounted. If this is not the rationale of the cure* ac- complished by his Pills and Ointment, lec the far nit v give us a better. We are in afferent as to what theory may be adopted in explanation, so long as the themselves remain unshaken.— Irish Lmanci^atvr,
