THE DOROTHEA QUARRY ACCIDENT.
THE DOROTHEA QUARRY ACCIDENT. THE INQUEST. =Thc adjourned inquiry into the death of Owen Williams, quarryman, who, with six other ai-n. whose bodies are not yet recovered, was .wiled by a fall at the Dorothea folate Quarry, Xantlle, on December 29th, was resumed at the quarry offices, on Tuesday, before Dr. Hunter Hughes, the district coroner for Carnarvonshire. -lIr C. A. Jones appeared for the proprietors of the quarry, Mr Norman Davies, the managing proprietor, and Mr O. T. Owen, the working manager, being also present. Mr Pearson watched the inquiry on behalf of the Home Office. Mr Owen Jones, the Post-office, was the foreman of the jury.-Robert Williams, "table man," a witness who was examined at the original inquiry, and who was one of the gang of z! workmen who were engaged upon the surface at pit B, where the fall occurred, was recalled, and said that he had worked at the quarry for eleven years, being nine and a half years of that period at the pit or shaft in question. This portion of the quarry was worked the same as other parts of the workings, and they were blasting on that side on the day of the accident. Everything seemed quite safe, and there had been no undermining on that side of the quarry. There were about twenty men working by night and day shifts on the side. The men killed at work at the bottom were immediately below where the fall took place, and there was not the slightest indication of danger. Had there been any cracks or fissures, witness must have noticed them. as that por- tion of the quarry he saw daily, and they would have at once presented themselves to his view. He had never heard that that side of the quarry had been abandoned on account of its dangerous character. Had any dangerous place shown itself, it would have been immedi- ately removed. There were no signs of water.- By Mr Pearson; He had never heard of any men refusing to work on that or any other side of the quarry. The eight men at the bottom, seven of whom were killed, were working over- time. The distance from where the fall took place in a straight line to where the deceased were working would be from thirty to forty yards. The top fell into the quarry at the furthest end at first, and continued falling along the bank. It was daylight before any quantity of water came in. but a little appeared when the fall commenced. The water had continued flowing until the previous afternoon, when it was stopped by artificial means. Mr Owen Thomas Owen said that',he had been the sole manager of the Dorothea quarry, in which he was also a shareholder, since Mr Evans, his predecessor, left to take charge of jthe Pen- rhyn slate quarries. During his experience, ex- tending over 28 years, he had seen many falls in the different sections of the quarries. They were of most frequent occurrence on the left or north side. There had never been any unexpected or other falls on the side where the accident occur- red. The two other shafts were more distant from the lake. the top being on a lower level than the others. The lake at one time extended over the top of the shaft in which the fall toek place. All the three shafts were equally worked, and during his management the side where ;the fall occurred had not been touched or extended by him. a section'of bad,rock-in one place 30 yards long—all along the side being partially aban- doned. That was just opposite where the fall occurred, but it did not come down. The men would be working from 80 to 100 yards from where the fall took place. The piece of bad rock was left as a support to the side, and they were working about 100 yards below it. and removing one of the galleries. Geologically speaking, that side of the quarry was safer than any other, the joints of the rock running to the south-east— towards the lake had it been otherwise, it would have been very much more dangerous. They had never ceased working on the' gallery which came down, and it had been worked during the manage- ment of Mr Evans, and they were continuing working it in the same manner. The slate rub- bish was tipped intolthe lake. there being no embankment nor anything to prevent the water coming into the quarry. He attributed the cause of the fall to the sharp dip of the rock, which caused the clay to become thicker, and that some water might have been running through. The water had been gradually working its way through a gravelly bed and into the clay, and finding a crevice in the rock behind, the slip followed.- Mr Pearson Then the edge of the lake has been defective ? Yes, I think so, but only a small quantity of water would come through.— The Coroner Yes, but small quantities of water will increase as they go on.—Mr Owen There was a puddling of clay at the edge of the lake which was washed away, and so the water perco- lated. He saw the side of the shaft the day before the accident, it being his daily duty to in- spect the working both above and below. Some men on one occasion, about a week before the accident, said that there was some clay coming down from the top of the portion which fell- which was usually the case after heavy rainfall. He at once inspected the place, and found in sight four or five feet—about ten tons—of clay, which had been on the top of the rock. Only a few pounds of this clay fell into the quarry. There was one small crack visible, and the place seemed a little moister than usual. He told the men not to work under it on any account if there was any danger. They generally had cracks in the clay after heavy rain, and this particular one, which would admit one's little finger/ran to the south in an oblique direction. Other evidence was given, and the jury returned the following verdict:—" We are of opinion that the deceased came by his death by a pure accident, which could not have been foreseen. We are of opinion that deepening the bed of the river would lessen the level of the lake and would prevent similar accidents, and we recommend this to the con- sideration of all quarry proprietors affected by it." „ ,1
