FOOTBALL. RHYL V. CARNARVON IRONOPOLIS. This match was played at Rhyl last Satur- day. Carnarvon was not fully represented, their secretary having to tin a vacancy at the last moment. Rhyl, however, had a strong team. Carnarvon won the toss, and elected to play with a slight wind in their favour. From the kick-off the "Nops" preyed and held the upper hand for some time. Ultimately Rhyl had a turn at pres- sing, but the "Nops" defence was very sound, and it was rarely that the Rhyl for- wards seemed dangerous. The "Nops" were not long before they were again at the other end, and after some smart play on their right wing the ball was passed to D. J. Jones, who placed it in the net, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside. Car- narvon continued to press, and were not I long before they had again defeated Glass, Jahnny Willianisthistime doing the trick. ¡ This goal, however, was allowed. From the kick off the ball was passed to W. Jones, the Rhyl outside left, who raced down the field and equalised with a good shot. Half- time was soon afterwards announced, the score being one goal each. From the re- start Carnarvon pressed and were very nearly scoring on several occasions. End to end play followed for some time, and both goalkeepers had plenty to do. The magnificent display of J. Griffiths, the Car- narvon right half-back, was a prominent feature in this half. This young player vs as continually applauded by the spectators. Howell Evans was also playing remarkaoiy well, but he was handicapped by not hoirg put in his original position. Towards llie close the play became a trifie rough, and the excitement more intense. Both sides strove hard to gain the winning goal. W. Morris and Johnny Williams made some fine runs along the right wing, but their efforts proved futile. Midfield play followed for r. short time, and then the ball was pa-scd to the Rhyl centre forward, who was standng a few yards behind J. O. Williams. The ball was shot through. Hughes, 'he 'Nops' custodian, having no chance to save. The 'Nops appealed strongly against the goal on the ground of off-side play, but the referee gave his decision in favour of Rhyl. Only three minutes remained for play, f.1d dur- ing this time the 'Nops tried hard to equal- ise, but to no purpose,, and finally the whistle blew with the score Rhyl, 2 goals; Carnarvon, 1. For the homesters W. Jones the outside left, was the pick of the for- wards, and Middleton at cent c half plawl a very good game. For the 'Nop;, J. 0. Williams and Matt. Hughes, the backs, and J. E. Hughes, the goalkeeper, slowed a stubborn defence, and will take som? beat- ing. J. Griffith and Howell Evans played very well, whilst J. Williams and W. is WIre the pick of the forwards MENAI BRIDGE V. BANGOR NORMAL COLLEGE. Great interest was taken on Saturday in the first home match of the Mena Bridge Football Club. The Bangor Normal College eleven were the visitors, and, as both teams in the past have been ver evenly matched, a good, game was antcipated. The College had a large number of enthusiastic sup- porters. Councilor Thomas Roberts hav- ing set the ball in motion, the homesters, after a few minutes brisk play, scored their I first goal. The College made every effort to equalise, but at half time no further points was secured. On resuming, plav be- came very fast and exciting, the visitors scoring their only goal, whilst, by means of very good forward play, the homesters were able to add three more goals to their credit. It is confidently anticipated that, should Menai Bridge maintain the splendid form shown on Saturday, tney will be at the top of the Anglesey League.
