i ——— HOLYHEAD FORMATION OF A DEBATING SOCIETY.—A meeting was held on Mon- SOCIETY.—A meeting was held on Mon- day evening at the Public Coffee House, to consider the advisability of forming a Mutu- ual Improvement Society, or some other so- ciety of a kindred nature, which should be undenominational and unpolitical. It was not inteded in any way to clash with, or militate against the existing societies in connection with the various places of wor- ship, but rather to embrace all classes and to be carried on in the English, language. The chair was occupied by Captain George Lewis, and there was a very representing gathering present. It was decided to es- tablish a society to be called The Holyhead Debating Society, and officers were ap- pointed as follows: -President, Rev Gomer Evans; vice-presidents, Mr J. Edmonds, Homelea, and Mrs Pritchard, Bodawen; I treasurer, Mr T. J. Jones, chemist; secre- tary, Mr J. Lewis, Fair View. The meet- ings will be held weekly on Monday even- 1 ings at 8.15, the place to be decided upon again. At the first meeting, the President will read a paper on "Studies in the life of Oliver Cromwell." c- CLEVER CAPTURE.-Detective-ser- geant Denis Dunney, of the Irish Constabu- lary, on Friday evening received informa- tion that Sergeant Albert Foster, of the I Sherwood Foresters, stationed at Curragh i Camp, Dublin, had deserted, and was want- ed for the larceny of two watches, the pro- < perty of fellow officers. Later, on the ar- rival of the North Wall, one of the North- western steamers, from Dublin at Holyhead, Detective Dunney arrested Foster, who de- nied the theft. Foster and his wife had booked to Blackburn. On Saturday, at a special police court, before Mr O. Hughes, the accused was brought up in custody and was remanded to await an escort from Dub- lin. CONCERT.—On Tuesday evening a very good concert was held at Siloh Chapel (Bap- tist), Llaingoch. The chair was ably occu- pied by Dr Rowland Williams, and Iorwerth Menai acted as conductor. Miss Nelly Jones, Stanley Cresent, was the accompan- ist. The programme was an excellent one. Mr John Parry, junior, Tyddyn Bach, was heartily thanked for his kindness in organis- ing the concert and for assisting the cause in this manner for many years past. The attendance was large. POLICE COLRT.—On Friday, before Captain W. H. Edwards an dMr Owen Hughes, a yabourer named Thomas Jones, Rhosmor, Llangwfan, was charged by Owen I Roberts, the Aberffraw constable, with us- ing profane language. The charge having been proved the defndaiit was fined 12s Gel, including costs.—B. McNoon, Dublin, was brought up an remand charged with steal- c ing pies, &c., from the waiting room at the railway station and was remanded. HARVEST FESTIVAL.—On Sunday, at, the English Wesleyan Chapel, Cross street, harvest thanksgiving services were helJ, when suitable discourses were delivered by the Rev Charles Winters, the supt. minis- ter.—On Monday evening a service of song was held entitled "Farmer Holroyd's Har- vest Supper," a story by the late Rev J. Jackson Wray. The rendering by the choir was excellent. Mr J. Edmonds, R.N., Homelea, was the chairman. MUSICAL FESTIVAL.—On Tuesday, at Hyfrydle (C.M.) Chapel, a musical fest- ival was held. The object of the festival was t opromote congregational singing, and the various churches of the denomination in Holyhead and vicinity have for some ti past been undergoing special training by their respective leaders. Mr David Jenkin3 Mus. Bac., Aberystwyth, attended specially to conduct the services, and paid a high tribute to the performances. BOARD OF GUARDIANS.—The ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Tues- day, Mr R. Jones, J.P., presiding. STATISTICS.—The following amount were paid in out-relief during the past fort- night:—Holyhead District, L82 2s 0d; Aberffraw District, £ 46 3s 6d; Bodedern, District, £ 55 2s lid; total increase, £ 4 14s • nd. The Master (Mr Jones) reported that Mrs Thomson, Mrs Edmunds, and Mrs Wilkin" son, had sent a supply of books, periodicals, and papers for the use of the in-mates. The senders were thanked for their kindness. LEAVE OF ABSENCE.—Miss Hugbe^ the industrial trainer, applied for 13 days leave of absence, which was granted TENDERS.—The Guardians had under consideration tenders for the supply 0 f bread and flower, butcher's meat, butter, grocery, drapery, coal, &c., but were lull- able to complete the letting of contract the rising of the Board.
