Jones, Liverpool House, on Saturday morning. The goods in the window were burnt, together with a portion of the stock inside the shop. The property was rasured.

In the afternoon a football match waif played between the local team Crewe town, the homesters being successful by three goals to nil. On Boxing Day an exceptionally large crowd witnessed the Bar.gor v. Crewe St. John's match,,the former winning a fast game by six zoals-to two. The offcialsit the Post Office had to cope with unprecedented pressure this Cliristmasti.de, but the special arrange- ments made by the postmaster (Mr Jones) for the collection and delivery of letters proved most satisfactory, and comparatively little deiay 'ook place. At the Work- house, which was tastefully deorrated with evergreens and holly, an excellent dinner was provided for ti'e inmates, and the'mas- ter (Mr Jones) rf ported to the Guardians on Friday that the inlal consisted of roast br-t-f. pork, and plum pudding. He wished to tender thanks to the Guardians for their kindness, and, on behalf of the inmates, he wished them a prosperous new year. Per- sonally he had to thank the Guardians for the courtesy and kindness shown towards the matron and himself. SUDDEN DEATH.—Shortly after the one o'clock whistle was sounded at the Ty nyweirglodd Quarry on Vnday, Mr Ro- bert Jones, Pencaemaen, went to his work, I ana when in the act ef picking up his tools, he expired. He was about sixty years of ace, and leaves a wioow and children. Dr Hunter Hughes, coroner for South Carnar- vonshire, held an inquest on the body on Monday. The jury returned a verdict of "Death from be-art disease."

Griffith .Ames,, Ty JEsaf Farm, Clynnog, was. charged with stealing a quantity of tur- nips, the property of Griffith Edwards,, farmer, Clynuog. Superintendent Row- land briefly stated, the ease for the pro- secution and called the informant. to give evidence.—Griffith Edwards said that he saw the accused in his, field on the 24th December. There was, a large quantity of turnips in the fieldi Witness watched the defendant for a considerable time, and eventually he saw hine putting turnips into a bag. After ho had filled the bag he ran away. Witness and man named D. Jones went after- him, ahd caught him. David Jones said to him, "We have caught you now." The defendant in reply said, "Yes, you have."—Mr J. T. Roberts de- fended;, and said; that his client was a re- spectable farmer reaidiag at Clynnog. He admitted having taken the turnips, which were valued at It, but they were not car- ried awav from the field. He had never before been guilty of such an offence. THe informant, interrupting, said, "I ea light him in the field four years aLO. Mr J. T. Roberts, proceeding, said that the defendant absolutely denied that. There was bad blowd between the parties arising out of a case- heard at the court some vears ago He &sked the Bench to deal with the defendant under the First Offenders' Act.—The Bench, after a short deliberation^ fined the defendant 20s and costs. NO UGHT.G-rifth Davies, Co-op- erative Stores, Llanberis, was cliarged with driving a horse and cart without a light.— He was ordered to pay the costs. MAINTENANCE. — WUliam Evans, Saron, Bethel, was summoned by the Car. narvon Board of Guardians- for not contri- buting towards the maintenance of his mother. —Mr Richard Roberts, who de- I fended, said that, the defendant, allowed his mother to live in a cottage which could be rented at 8s a month. — The Bench ordered him to pay one shilling per weefr in addition to allowing her to live in the house free.

LI.oYD GRIFFITH —With the deepest regret we have to an- I nounce the death of Mr John Lloyd Grif- fith, M.A., which took place on Wednes- I day afternoon, after a Fingering illness, at hits resdenco, Frondeg, Holyhead. The deceased1 was the only son of the late Re 7. I Henry Griffith, rector of Llandrygarn, and was a grandson, of tho renowned Rev. Simeon Lloyd, Bala. "Resolution," was summoned by the same oer for being drunk and dis- orderly, and David Alexander Flood, ot the same ship, was charged by P.O. 9 (E. W/Uiamf,) with resisting the police in the execution of their duty. It appeared from t.he evidence that there was a great crowd of bluejackets and civilians in Nelson Sq., flid amonest them were tne prisoners. The Guard- ians have resolved to ask the Local Gov- ernment Board to allow them to grant pen- sions of JES2 and £20 to the retiring mas- ter and matron respectively. Mr J. P. Watkin could have claimed his pension many years ago, but he continued to fui-, fit his duties up to last week, and that moo" efficiently, though 83 years old. Miss Griffith, the retiring matron, had also carried out her dirties most satisfactorily. BRIGHTENING -CHn..DRE'S LIVES. —Mr W. Ashley Jones, solicitor, Bangor, has been in the habit of brightening the JiVef; of the little children who attend Saind street Mission School, by sending them every year beautiful Christmas cards with Scriptural pictures on them. He did so this year, and the friends in charge of the school feel very much indebted to him. The cards were highly appreciated by the youngsters. It seems that Mr Ashley Jones got to know seme years ago of the pood done at the above Mission. School, and he has every year since then sent cards to the scholars. Bangor and Bsaumcr:; Guardians' The fortnightly meeting was held on Fri- day, at Bai'gor Workhouse, Mr Hugh Thomas (chairman) uiv-iding. THE BANGOR OVERSEERS AND THEIR OBLIGATIONS. The Chairman read a Letter from the over- seers for the parish of Bangor, who had been supplied by the Board with a copy of the auditor's report concerning the late rate coi- lector for the parish of Bangor. The over- seers. iu their communication, stated that tpyle, had. carefully considered the report of the dl trict auditor and grtatly regretted the irregu- larities refened to, but they f -it that they were in no way responsible for them. The rate collector was engaged by tiio4 Guazdians, and ail employers were litbie and responsible for the work of their servants; therefore, the report in this instance concerned the employ- ers and not the overseers. If the collection oi the rates had been left in their hands as overseen* they would have seen that the work wa. duly performed, but they had no auth- ority over the collector of rates, therefore, tfcfcy declined responsibility for tln-o acts.— I < The Chairman They are quite wrong. Morgan, it was agreed to draw up a list of the duties of over- seers. PROPOSED STANDING COMMITTEE. In accordance; with notice of motion, Mr 1. Roberts (Abr), vice-chairman, moved: "That the Board elect., a Standing Committee Lo consider and repeat upon all matters reiau. tng to officers (medical and relieving) and rate collectors, and any other officer of the "Board,, as well as any question affecting any member of the Board."—Mr Bernard Robert .a (Llanfairfecha.il) seconded.—Mr Thomas Ed- wards (Bangor) took strong objection to the words "as well as any question affecting- any member of the Board." He would like au explanation upon that. point.—Thtf Vice- Chairman replied that a question might ari.se when the character of a member of the Board might be involved. —Dr Roberts thought that this part was not permissible, and Mr W. 'Roberts also opposed the motion.—Mr Ber- nard Robert pointed out that the proposed oommittec would not possess the power to decide matters. They could only recom- I mend to the Boa.-Pd.-Nir W. R. Jones fBeau- maris) objected to the part of the motion dealing with private members, remarking that the committee would sit like jurymen upon any charge against a. guardian.—Mr W Ro- berts (Oa-l-lapds) Supposing a complaint i. brought, against an official, outside influence oould be brought to bear upon a small com- mittee. Everything should be done in open Board.—Mr David Williams (Bangor) was of opinion that the present was not the time to elect any landing committer. The com- mittees already in existence were appointed in a very irregular manner, and the mem- bers were elected regardless of competence (cries of "No, no") Persons were elected on the Finance Committee who knew absolute- ly nothing abor.t financial matters.—Mr Ro- be (Oakland:") moved that a committee should be appointed when needed. Mr Thomas Edwards seconded. — The Rev W. Morgan thought that- there was a sort of military tonfo about the proposal. It was like threatening the officials with a birchrod.— The Cha irman. A birchrod is a veiy good thing (laughter). — The Rev W. Morgan: Only for children.—Mr W. Griffith (Rachub) supported the proposal: Replying on the discussion, the Vice-Chairman, stated that occasionally grove injustice, was done to officials in disccsring allegations against them in open Boord. He was willing to strike out of the motion the part relating to private members. A vote was then taken, which resulted in the motion being defeated by a large majority.
