GARDENING NOTES.
GARDENING NOTES. By JAMES CARTER & CO. f' CURRENT WORK. The most important work in cou-iectiou with the plant-houses will be to see that all ■winter-lfowering plants are potted on as they require it. Bego:iias (winter-fiower- iiig) 'should soon be ready for putting' into •their flowering pots, and an that require it should be- stopped for the last time. Salvias should also have their final move by the end of the present month. Tree Carnations and Boavardias will also require attention, especially with regard to tying, -<&s, where exposed, they are very liable to break off if we get rough, stormy weather. Although some of th-i Bouvardias that are grown on for succession may be stopped later, yet the main batch should now be gone over for the last time. Cinerarias .and PrimultM must not be neglected the former are sure, to get crippled by insects if allowed w get pot-bound; whiie Pri- jnulus that at-t- allowed to stand too long before being potted on never make good plants, and will very probably flower pre- maturely. Where it is required, to have a show of Primulas for spring flowering, a -•owing should be made at once Cineraria-s I Rown now will also come in very useful after the first int is over, fnd will retain thit;ir foliage bett-x than thove sown .?arlier. Solanum capsicastrum is one of the most c&efui platfts for winter decoration. They should now ba well i.i flc-wer, and, to get -them to Elf' their berries well, they must I be exposed, and on no account be allowed "to suffer for W;L1t of water, and as soon ibs -the berries are nicely set they should be .liberally supplied with manure-water. This Solanum, when full of its bright berries, is among the most useful of deco- rative subjects during the winter, bjt they -often fail to set through inattention in watering, which causes the flowers to fall, and, to prevent this, the plants should be plunged and kept moist at the roots, as well a-s sprinkled or syringed overhead, which dampiag of the foliage will ward oft -vermin and maintain the leaves healthy a fid clean. TAKING CUTTINGS. It is time now to commence to propagate cuttings. for by taking them early they an be wintered! more safely than thev can if left till late in the season. Those of Geraniums may bo propagated in various ways, and all succeed well; they may be -dibbled in a border fully exposed to the sun, ..and taken up a!1d potted or boxed before there its dagger of frcst. A very good' way, «nd one that could be recommended, is to -secure> a. number of boxes according to the quantity of cuttings required they may be .about i inchos in depth, 3 feet long, and 14 inches wide; a few broken pots aid a flayer of Mushroom-soil should be plseed in the bottom, and they should hi" fiiled with soil of a nature similar to that which was recommended for potting young plants. Thi" should be made firm; each box will ■hold about seventy cuttings. After the cuttings arc? inserted, they should be watered and! stood in a sunny place o"; a, bed of ashee: or. if anv "mpty frames or turf-pit's ar.- at command n. which to place them, all the bett»»r, as they can then be protected from heavy rAi-ii-k; but at all other times they will lie better exposed. In •faking the cuttings from the plants care should be taken not to disfigure the beds, those overgrowing the edgings being re- .moved first. Tricolors nnd weak growing ,R.ort,q should be first attended to. leaving the Zonals and othier strong growers until 1a.st. CoJeu#?, Inesire, Verbenas. Helio- tiopos. Ageratam*, and others of that. class are best struck in pots they should be placed in ft cold watered occasionally, and shaded from the sun. The lights should be tilted a little on mild nights, but kept closed throughout the day. When rooted, gradually harden them to endmr both sun and free ventilation. Pentstemcns shou d also bo propagated now when rooted, pot them in small puh. They may be wintered in cold frames. but. lirotc-eted, from frost; they enn also be raised from seed, which should be sown in spring. Dahlias will now be beginning to blossom. Give them occa- sional sonkingr; of liquid manure, and secure th-em to their stakes; thin out the weak side-shoots. and tie th^ others, for they are easily broken by wind or heavy rains. Chrysanthemums sad Gladiolus must also he staked and tied. Thin out weak shoota ■on Ro^es. and shorten back the mo.t luxuriarat ones; and do not allow tlie> plants to su ff<yr bv want of water. Continue to bud Rosee. and insert cuttings; this is the best of all months for budding. Tbk in how to do it.
RENOVATING LAWNS.
RENOVATING LAWNS. Grass in front of villa or other residences is more or less uneven, thin in the sward, or patchy, after a. hot summer. When the ine- I qualities in lawns are very marked, hills here und hollows there, there is only one remedy -namely, to take up the grass in squares two inches thick, level the hills into the hollows, treading down the soil firmly, then raking it smooth, before placing down the turves again. If these are thicker on on9 side than the other, some of the soil must be pared off, so that they will lie quite flat, for, if uneven in that respect when first laid, the roller will net press them down uniformly level, and the result then cannot be satisfactory. When placed in position, the edges should be cut to fit close to each other, as fissures between them enlarge should dry weather ensue, and a close growth of grass is then out of the, question. If openings, no matter how small, are -Men between the turves, work some fine soil in them, then beat the whole surface firmly with the back of a spade or a broad, Sat. wooden mallet, subsequently drawing a roller slowly over the lawn a few times, and the grass will grow evenly. When the sur- face is only a little lumpy, without being particularly irregular, th.e surface may be scratched over with a sharp-toothed iron rake, and some sifted soil of any kind ob- tainable scattered on. The ground should be dry, ftui not hard, when this i;, done, and the surface then rolled or beaten. Should the grass be thin, procure some renovating lawn- seeds and scatter them evenly Oil the grass before rolling. Half a pound will suffice for Pv iav.n twenty yarcls square. Any sort of seeds will not do, a^ some grasses are coarse the best plan is to procure the best from a reliable source. When law.-Yis arc very thin, •ind full of unsightly wrcds, it is the best plan to dig them up entirely, forking out all the weeds, and either lay down turves, which are expensive, or sow the ground with fresh grass seed. The end of the present month is the best time for carrying out the operation in the north, and a wectt or so later in the south, and this is the method of procedure:—Fork out all the large-rooted weeds, levelling the surface as the work goes on then, as soon as dry enough, tread every inch of it, following with a rake for taking off all lumps, and sow grass seeds thickly, sifting a quarter of an iuch of flie soil over them. Draw a light roller over the whole, (Ii' beat the surface COWTI with a spade, and in a very short time a new lawn n ill be produced, far superior to the old one, and will be ready for mowing in a month, or perhaps lass, always provided that birds do not devour the seeds, which may be prevented by stringing cotton three or four inches above the ground on sticks in- serted in it; the closer the thready are stretched the better. If the whole work is well carried out, a smooth lawn should be apparent before winter, which will thicken up marvellously as soon as spring comes round. We publish a useful book which can be had on application by rc-aders of this article. JAMES CARTER & CO., Royal Seedsmen, High Holborn, London, W.C.

JS!v-J I A MARVELLOUS STORY l ROM THE J'UBUSJIERS OF 'TYHT A ll DYDD,' MERTHYR TYDVIL. Oorvr Hit*.—One of my Sons went out 10 Canada and settled down, in the neigh- bourhood of OiJspring:5, Lambton, Ontario. Some three months ago he wrote home Wi-yiiig he had been on the siek list for several weeks, suffering painfully from I Piles. Immediately after receiving his letter 1 had a supply of your Pills wlmh I forwarded to him. Three weeks ago hi) wrote home saying that your Pills had done him immense good. Before lu had litnsr-.od one box he was able to start work a,'j;ain. Lu.st night I had another It-tUT from him stating that to all appearances Uie dispose had left him, and he was in his i.'fmrd health again. Having accidentally heard that a man living in the same 'neighbourhood had been a great sufferer from Piles for over Iweniy « years, my son sought him out, told him of the good ho had received from your Pin. and gave h'm half of the box he had. Within four days the man was jumping with jov from the good effects of your Piils. Haviny received so much benefit personally, and witnessing their good effects on the man referred to, my son is very anxious that other sufferers may know and receive the same benefit from tnem as he did himself.
