Aberdare Horse Show.
Aberdare Horse Show. A Grand Success. Full List of Awards. The Aberdare Grand Horse Show, held at the New Athletic Grounds, Aberdare, oil Monday, was a gigantic success in every respect. Glorious weather prevailed, and ilic field was visited by thousands of people. Flags and bunting were hung out from some of the chief establishments of the town in honour of the event, and the place vore a very animated appearance. The Abernant and other collieries suspended operations at 12 o'clock, to enable those en- iaged at those places to visit the show. -he morning attendance at the field was lrut fair, but in the afternoon, the T.V.H. end G.W.R. trains brought in a large num- ler from distant parts of the devotees of liorse shows. The prizes offered by the Committee had induced some of the most noted stud-owners to compete, and the list j of awards at once bears this out. The President of the Show was County Coun- cillor A. S. Pleace, High Constable of Mis- iin Higher. Among the Vice-presidents tre Mr J. J. Lewis, Dr W. Ll. Rhys, Coun- eillor W. T. Morgan, Alderman J. W. Evans, Japt. W. D. Phillips, Councillor Dd. Hughes, Messrs William Hughes, W. Thomas, solici- jor Thomas Lloyd, Rees Williams, and C. M. Lewis. The executive committee was composed of the following gentlemen Messrs A. S. Pleace, J. J. Lewis, J. G. Temple, A. W. Oxenham, T. Lloyd. J. D. Hughes, J.W. Hek, C, H, Elford, n. Griffiths, M. R. David, and F. D. E. George. Messrs | J. G. Temple, M.R.C.V.S., and A. W. Oxen- Iham, M.R.C.V.S., were the lion, veterinary surgeons. The judges were :—Cart and Harness Horses and Trotting section, Messrs W. Emerson, Cardiff; D. F. Pritchard, Crumlin; and D. Rees, Ferndale. In the Hunters and Hacks, Messrs Robert Jones, Swansea; John Anthony, Cilveitliy; T. B. Clode, Llandougli. Mr Tom Williams, Llwynypia, in addition to the foregoing, judged in the Jumping Competition. Stew- ards Mr J. J. Lewis, the Rock; classes: Messrs F. D. E. George, D. Griffiths, M. W. David, and George Burge; Field Messrs T. Lloyd, J. W. Hek, A. J. Sheen, G. J. Tuckfield, D. Parker, J. D, Hughes, C. H. Elford, J. M. Luck, and J. J. E. Thomas. The lion, secretary was the indefatigable Mr. Tom D. Jones, Albert street- Aberdare, and it is only the bare truth to state that the grand success of the show was in no [small measure due to his foresight and assiduity. It must be patent to all that to undertake the secretarial work of a show of this importance and dimension, is to under- take no light and ordinary task. It is cer- tainly no inconsiderable responsibility to have to see in a short space of time that 300 entry forms are correctly copied and classified. It happened on Monday that one of the exhibitors entered the secretary's tent, and lodged a grievance that he had been placed in the wrong class. The entry forms were forthwith produced, and it was immediately seen that the mistake lay on the side of the exhibitor, and not on the secretary. The committee are to be complimented, too, on bringing the famous Band of H.M. Scots Guards, to provide music during the day. By kind permission of Col. H. Fludyer, C.V.O., and under the conductorsliip of Mr Fred W. Wood, London, the band through- out the afternoon discoursed excellent selections of music from Wagner, Gounod, and other eminent composers. LUNCHEON. A capital spread was served on the field. Among those present were Mr D. A. Thomas, M.P., Mr. Pleace, high constable. Alderman J. W. Evans, the judges and others. The Royal toast was proposed by the President (Mr. Pleace); and responding to their toast (submitted by Mr Evans), the judges warmly complimented the town on the high merits of the show, and character- ised the various competition as being of a high order.—Mr D. A. Thomas proposed Success to the Show," and casually allud- ing to the coal trade, he observed that, although a dark cloud had for some time past been veiling the horizon, yet he cher- ished the hope that the masters and the men's leaders would be in a position to devise such negotiations as would bring about an amicable settlement. .Ib.L St. Vincent de Paul Society. Entertainment at Aberdare. Under the auspices of the Aberdare con- ference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an excellent entertainment was given at the Constitutional Hall, on Thursday evening. The entertainment consisted of a lecture on Ireland," illustrated with beautiful limelight views, interspersed with songs and recitations by local artistes. The local conference is held in connection with St. Joseph s Catholic Church, and has been in existence now for five months. The Society was first formed in Paris in May, 1833, by a young law student, one Freder- ick Ozanam. who, with a M, Bailly and six other comrades, composed the first confer- ence. The work of the Society may be gleaned from the words of M, Bailly at that meeting :—" Do not be content to dole out alms alone. Go and make friends with the poor. Give to each family what personal help your own better training enables you to. In all cases help them to help them- selves. and whether you take them alms or not, endeavour to render some personal service." That is the sum and substance of the aims and objects of this Society, and the local Brothers have humbly and un. ostentatiously endeavoured to carry it out by relieving the sufferings of some of the poor of the district. The funds having approached low-water mark, the foremost members of the local branch organized this entertainment with tlie view of replenishing the Society's power and usefulness by rendering further aid and ministering addi- tional comfort to those in needy circum- stances. That the benignant efforts of Father O'Reilly and other members were generally appreciated, was shown by the splendid attendance at the entertainment on Thurs- day evening. Previous to the lecture. Mr. J. A. Phillip^ Quadrille Band gave exquisite selections of music. The accompanist was Mr. Gwilym Lewis. Merthyr. Father O'Reilly an- nounced the regrettable absence of Father Clarke of Merthyr. who was to deliver the lecture. The limelight views were then proceeded with. Father O'Reilly proved a good substitute to Father Clarke, in giving brief descriptions of the various scenes in Ireland presented on the canvass. The audience were taken through some of the most delightful parts of the Emerald Isle. visiting county Wicklow, the Lakes of Killarney, and other picuresque places. In the course of the evening lVlr Tom Garrett gave very fine renderings of Ora Pro Nobis and The Holy City, and was loudly applauded. Miss Hughes sang the very appropriate song Killarney," and in response to shouts of encore, repeated the last verse. Another item was given by Mr. Bert. Dunn, who recited in an admirable manner "Women of Mumbles Head." Some difficulty was experienced with the Cinemetograph at first, but eventually a faithful representation of the Coronation Procession was given, which concluded the interesting meeting.
