Hirwainites Honoured in Australia.
Hirwainites Honoured in Australia. The following report of the presentation to Mr Bedlington appeared in a recent issue of The Collie Miner, a Western Australia weekly :—" On Saturday evening last, there was a large gathering at the Premier Hotel, on the occasion of the presentation of a handsome tea and coffee set to Mr and Mrs Bedlington (the daughter and son-in-law of Mr D. Evans, J.P., Mill street, Hirwain), by the employees of the proprietary No. 2 Pit. Mr Bedlington, manager, having severed his connection with the mine. Dr. Rigby was in the chair. The chairman said they were all there that evening to do honour to Mr and Mrs Bedlington, and he had been deputed by the employees oi the mine to make a presentation to them. He was sure that Mr Bedlington was proud of the esteem in which lie was held by the men. His acquaintance with Mr Bedlington had not _tual I been exclusively as a mine manager. He knew him and respected him as a man. They all regretted losing him and on be- half of the employers of the old proprietary. lie presented Mr and Mrs Bedlington with a silver tea and coffee set. Happy refer- ences were also made to the deep feeling of respect which was entertained for Mrs Bedlington by one and all. Mr Bedlington, 17-1 11 who on rising to respond, was received with hearty applause, on behalf of Mrs Bedling- ton and himself, thanked them for the magnificent present. He could assure them that such a gift was more than he deserved or had expected. He could not understand why such a presentation was made. He I was pleased to notice so many present that evening. He assured them that the mere value of the present would not weigh with him. Had its intrinsic value been far less it would have appealed to him all the same, It had been said that any man who was a 1 cricketer or a footballer could obtain work 1 at the mine. and to some extent that was true. From his experience of cricketers and footballers, lie could say that they j always appeared to him to be live men, and not possessing that tired feeling." How- < ever, he had always got his worth out of the men. He thanked them most heartily for their presentation, and assured them that it would always be treasured by Mrs Bedlington and himself. During the even- ing the following took part:—Dr. Rigby, '7 Messrs Bray, J. Coady, T. Hodgson, (J. < Lilley, J. King, and Mr John Ewing." Hirwainites are delighted to hear the good] news of their son and daughter from far-off 1 Western Australia, and congratulate them < on their success. 1 ]

Aberdare High Constable.
Aberdare High Constable. We are pleased to state that our High Constable. Mr. A. S. Pleace. Black Lion Hotel, has received the Coronation medal and a script, which runs as folloivs. Home Office, Whitehall, 18th September, 1902. Dear Sir,—I have received the King's commands to transmit to you the following medal which His Majesty has been graciously pleased to confer upon you on this occasion of the Coronation of their Majesties. I beg to request that you will be good enough to send me an acknowledgement of b the receipt of this decoration." I am Sir, Your obedient servant. A. AKERS DOUGLAS. Alfred Sidney Pleace. Esq.. High Constable of Aberdare, Monk-villa, Aberdare. Only in three districts in England and Wales has the ancient and honourable office of High Constable been preserved, and of these Merthyr and Aberdare are two. Through the intervention of Mr. D. A. Thomas, M.P.. the chief municipal dignita- ries of these two places have been honoured in a similar manner to the Mayors of incor- porated towns.
Carmel, Aberdare.
Carmel, Aberdare. On Sunday week, Anniversary Services were held at the above cliapel, when the Rev. Pandy John, Barry, ministered to large congregations. In the morning Mr John 11 1 71 preached from Heb. x. 05 a very practical and instructive sermon, touching upon some of the social problems of the present day. The pastor, the Rev. Thomas Jones, conducted the service. The service on this occasion had an additional interest inasmuch as it was commemorative of the 30tli year of Mr Jones' pastorate of Carmel. During that long period Mr Jones has been no idler either in religious or secular spheres. He has taken an active and prominent part in the moral and religious development of the neighbourhood, and has rendered yeoman service in social and political circles. He is an ardent educationalist, and is at pre- sent a member of the Aberdare School,- Board, and is also one of the Governors of the County School. He is a popular citizen as well as an ideal pastor. His lengthy connection with Carmel Church is a testi- mony to the mutual good feeling that exists between pastor and flock. We sincerely trust that he may yet be spared many years to continue his noble vocation, and to fur- ther serve his neighbourhood and his gene- ration.
Concert at Aberdare.
Concert at Aberdare. On Monday a grand concert was held at the Constitutional Hall under the auspices of the Aberaman Silver Band, conducted by Mr. H. Bentley. The genial High Constable, Mr. A. S. Pleace. C.C.. worthily discharged the duties of chairman, and steered a large and appreciative audience through the fol- lowing programmeQuick step by the Band. Song, Honour and Arms," by Mr. L. J. Aberdare). fresh from his field of triumph at the Bangor Eisteddfod, was the accompanist and received quite an ovation. The soprano soloist. Miss Theresa Tidball. the winner of the champion solo at Cardiff last August, was also a favourite, while Messrs. M. James and L. J. Davies acquitted themselves admirably, as also did the instrumental soloist and duettists. We trust that this successful concert will prove to be the forerunner of the success of the Band at the Crystal Palace on September 27, when they will make a stubborn fight for the much-coveted Champion Trophy This magnificent prize was on view in front of the platform on Monday night. It is a elegant article and most artistically designed The following words are beautifully0 in- scribed thereon: Challbllge Cup Brass Band Contest, Designed for the Crystal Palace Company by S. J. Manchester. The- contest on Satur- day will be watched with the keenest eager- less. Peculiar interest is attached to Crystal Palace competitions by Aberdarians. They remind them of the palmy days of Carado'^ md the Cor Mawr when Welsh vocalism tnvoke and found itself famous after the Rants' trial of strength. We trust that the iriumpli of Welsh choirs will be repeated by )ur Welsh bands. If the former are on the ivane at present, the latter are certainly n ihe ascendant, 9
