FOLEY, Esq., President. Summary of ANNUAL REPORT for the Year ending December 31st, 1912. Your Directors have much pleasure in placing before you the results of another year's work. The year was distinguished by the biggest epidemic of strikes ever experienced in this country-affecting, as they did, the Industrial classes in every part of the United Kingdom added to this, our Staff took upon themselves the responsibility of securing for our Policy- holders and others the advantage, of the National Health Insurance Act, through the National Amalgamated Approved Society. Both of these exceptional circumstances have militated somewhat against our rate of progress. It is therefore very satisfactory that, owing to the untiring activity of the Company's representatives, notwithstanding all drawbacks, these good results have been achieved. A valuation of the business of the Company has been made by the Company's Consulting Actuary, k. M. MOORE, Esq., who reports a surplus of £247.853 after providing for all liabilities, and adding £ 70,000 Lo the Reserve Fund, making that Fund £ 170,000. TOTAL INCOME. The Total Income for the year amounted to iC3,047,869 Is lid., being an increase ofF.98,202 19s. 2d. over that of the previous year. In the Ordinary Branch, the mcome amounted toj6618,173 178. 1 Od., which is £ 51,766 78. 2d. greater than that of the previous year. The number of Policies issued during the year in this Branch was 25,279, assuring the sum of Z2,090,507, and producing a New Annual Premium Income of 691,633 is. 4d. CLAIMS. The Company has paid 135,287 Life Claims, Grants, Matured Endowments, Accident and Employer's Liability Claims during the year, amounting with Bonuses and outstanding Claims, to £1,119,065 14s. id., which, added to the sums previously paid, make a total of iRI3,819,330 Os. 10d. TOTAL FUNDS. The Assurance Funds now amount to &7,595,362 14s. 4d. which show an increase of £ 603,956 8s. id. for the year, making the total funds, with Capital paid up, 98,285,491 19.. Forthcoming Local Elections.
Forthcoming Local Elections. The nominations for the County Council elections are to be in to- morrow (Friday). The retiring mem- bers are: No. 1 Ward, Mr M. J. Harris; No. 2, Mr T. Walter Williams; No. 3, Mr W. Thomas; No. 4, Mr G. A. Tre- harne; No. 5, Mr T. L. Davies. In the first-named Mr Harris does not seek re-election, and Councillors L. N. Williams, J.P., and Thomas Lewis are contesting. A deputation waited upon Mr Frank Hodges asking him to stand, but Mr Hodges finds it impossible to give the necessary timo to the office. No new County Council candidates, as yet, are mentioned for the other Wards. In the Town Ward Mr David Hughes' period as alderman expires, and, there- fore, he will have to seek re-election as County Councillor. The probability is that he will be re-elected alderman, and that Mr W. Thomas will then fill the vacancy thus caused in the Ward, as he did three years ago. Mr Hughes is on his way back to this country from New Zealand, and will not reacfi home until after the County Council election. The nomination day for the District Council elections is March 15th. Alder- man Rees Llewelyn is retiring, and his eldest son, Mr D. R. Llewelyn, is men- tioned as his successor. Mr Illtyd Hop- kins, who has removed from Aberaman to the Gadlys Ward, is seeking a seat for the latter place, where there is a vacancy owing to the departure of Mr H. H. Evans. A new member will, therefore, be required to partner Mr E. M. Hann for Aberaman Ward. In the Guardians' elections Mrs R. H. Miles has announced her intention of contesting the seat made^ vacant by the removal of Father O'Reilly from the district.
- jAberdare Educationj jCommittee.
Aberdare Education Committee. On Wednesday, Feb. 26th, Mr. A. P. Jcnes in the chair. The other members present were: Mr. Tom Lewis (vice- chairman), Mrs. Davies, Messrs. J. O. George, David Davies, J.P., George Powell, Idwal Thomas, Owen Powell, T. W. Williams, D. Jackson Thomas, with lr. T. Botting (director) and -All-. Tern D. Jones (assistant director). St. David's Day. The Director reported that he had sent out to the schools the suggestions made by the Board of Education re- garding the celebration of St. David's Day. The head-teachers had heartily responded, and the suggestions largely adopted. Re Appointment of Architect. Mr. D. Llewelyn Griffiths (Council Clerk) wrote regarding the above ques- tion, stating that the Council thought the appointment unnecessary. Mr. T. Lewis remarked that when the question was discussed in committee, few members had an opportunity to speak inasmuch as several members were constantly on their feet. The Chairman observed that certain considerations were put forward which made the appointment rather difficult. Ir. D. Davies said he was of opin- ion that all present were agreed that the appointment of an architect was quite unnecessary.—Mr. Geo. Powell said that at the meeting referred to. when the subject was considered, the Surveyor made a long statement which showed that the difficulties were prac- tically insiii-motintable.-It was under- stood that the subject will come up for discussion at a future meeting. Use of Schools for Friendly Societies. -The Cardiganshire Education Com- mittee wrote asking Aberdare to pass a resolution allowing the use of schools to approved Friendly Societies, free of charge.—Mr. T. Walter Williams had a notice on the agenda dealing with the same subject He moved "That this crmmittee is prepared to grant the use of class-rooms in the various schools to societies approved under the Insurance I Act. 1912, for the purpose of holding their meetings on the usual terms, sub- ject to the usaal regulations, etc." Mr

Williams said he was not prepared to adopt the recommendation of the Cardi- ganshire Committee. He thought the usual charges ought to be made.—Mr Geo. Powell seconded, and the motion was carried. School Dentist.—It was reported that Mr. John Isherwood Shorrock, Lan- cashire, had been appointed school dent- ist to the combined Education Authori- ties of Aberdare and Mountain Ash, and that he had been instructed to com- mence duties after Easter. The S. & M. Committee.-This com- mittee reported:—"A letter was read from Lord Pontypridd asking the com- mittee to allow a collection to be made in the schools on St. David's Day in support of a National Memoi-ial to the authors of 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.' After discussion it was recommended that no collection be made in the schools.—A letter from the Chamber of Trade wa read in reply to the Com- mittee's request for further particulars of the wishes of tho Chamber with re- ference to the teaching of geography. It was resolved: That the Director be asked to pay special attention to the teaching of geography in the schools, particularly of the geography of the British Isles. That six scholarships tenable at the Barry Summer School be offered to teachers in the service of the Committee, such scholarships to be equal in value to those offered by the Glamorgan County Council, i.e.. £ 3 each. That the total amount to be ex- pended on Summer School Scholarships shall not exceed £ 30."
-------Grand Theatre, Aberaman.
Grand Theatre, Aberaman. This week the bill is headed by the world's famous acrobats, the Pasquali Bros., who are exceptionally clever. They perform some wonderful equilibris- tic feats. Kitty Stewart, a skilled pianist and vocalist, is much apprecia- ted. She introduces the Ragtime Chorus, which arouses much merri- ment. Another good turn is Nprman and Allen, the popular pattering post- men. They are a pair of splendid comedians, and excel as step flancers. The chief attraction in. pictures is the heroic expedition of Captain Scott for the South Pole. This film, which is 1,000 feet in length, is very interesting I and educative. Other excellent films are: "u Daring's Adventure; Among the Valleys of the Alps, and The Toy- maker.
__---------New Theatre, Aberdare.
New Theatre, Aberdare. The famous Italian Grand Opera Co., who make their first visit to the town this week, and who have been engaged by the management of the New Theatre at a considerable cost, are under the able direction of Signor Cavaliere F. Castellano. They have already earned great praise from the large and ap- preciative audiences who have thronged the New Theatre this week. On Mon- day evening tho company performed the famous opera, entitled Carmen," in four acts. As Carmen," Signora Goretta performed her part with won- derful skill and precision, and sang her solos with feeling and pathos, whilst Signor D'Ottavi as Don Jose also gave his best in a clear tenor voice. As Micaela" Signora Barone fairly brought the house down, whilst Signor Yail, the eminent baritone, also had to respond several times to encores. In his part as Escamillo" he was really great, and his rendering of the popular Toreador song was thoroughly en- joyed. The remainder of the parts were most admirably taken by Signorinas Milli Boffini, and Signors Fragari, Quintini, Bartera, and Antonini. They are supported by a powerful chorus, who sing with charm and a lovely blend of tone. There is a large augmented or- chestra. which includes several Italian performers, and they are under the able direction of Signors Wehils and Herbin, whilst Miss Hopkins acts as harpist. During the week the company perform Faust," the Cavalleria Rusticana," 1. Pagliacci," and Maritana," the latter being sung in English on Satur- day night. Owing to the success of this company this week the management have induced Mr Castellano to give a sacred concert next Sunday at 8 p.m. The items ren- dered by the principal artistes of the company will be chiefly in English. A grand treat is in store for Aberdare music lovers. Admission by programme.

Up and Down the Valley. ABERAMAN. HAVE YOU VISITED the new Boot 7^ c.U- Le,wl-s' lato Public Benefit Boot Co. Specialities in Men's f -^°°ts a?,d Children's Nailed Office on Street, opposite Post CONSERVATIVE MEETING. At the Lesser Hall on Tuesday evening last a public meeting was held under the auspices of the Merthyr Unionists As- sociation, the Aberdare Constitutional # £ a^d the LadJ' Lewis Habitation the Primrose League. The speakers were Mr T. Hemsley, late Unionist can- ThT £ ? Orkney and Shetland, and Mr George Green, of the Tariff Reform League. Mr Austin Hughes presided, and remarked that he could not see why Aberaman should not have a strong Unionist following.—Mr George Green ^as introduced, and took the lanfr Keform question as his subject. They had had, he said, 65 years of Free trade, and there was nothing but misery, social unrest, and lock-outs in the country. The Government had ap- pointed a Labour advisor, but that had not improved the conditions. Mr As- quith had said that it was a good thing- to have goods imported from the for- eigner because it showed a prosperous trade. They why not get it all from the foreigner. He quoted Mr William Crooks, M.P., Mr Henderson, M.P., and' Mr Stephen Walsh, M.P., as being ia favour of a tariff. The British work- man was the most ski-lled person in the world. The speaker pointed. out the increase in trade under a tariff. England's trade with no tariff increased last year 7 per cent.; Germany under tariff 29 per cent., and the United States 35 per cent. Had protection ruined these countries? Our duty as citizens was to protect our workmen as other countries did.—Mr T. Hemsley said that they as a party had been Free Traders, but conditions had altered to- day. Another question he touched was the Insurance Scheme, in which he said no provision had been made is insta noes where the bread-winner was removed through death. This was not a new move to benefit the workmen, as they had banded together through the- clubs etc., before the Chancellor had thought of it. There were nresent om the platform:—Mr S. Cox (hon. sec., Aberaman Branch Conservative As- sociation), and Mr Brvchan Thomas (hon. sec., Aberdare Branch Conserve tive Association). A vote of thanks tc. the speakers and chairman was pro- posed by Mr James Thomas, and sec- onded by Mr J. Davies.—The same gen- tlemen addressed a meeting in Aber- dare on Wednesday. A vote of thankfc to both speakers was proposed by Coun- cillor A. P. Jones, who presided, and; seconded by Mr David Morgan.
