Pritchard (Glan Dyfi) delivered a power- ful sermon, taking his text fro- Luke xxi 34-36. The preacher said the text referred directly to a crisis in jhe national history of the Jewish people, Jlien Christ foretold the devastation pif their hoiv city by the Roman legion^ under Vespasian. tTnto them it a veritable day of visitation-of ment. Their refusal of Christ and His Gosnel of Peace fostered in them a spirit of discontent and rebellion which hastened the crisis.. Therewasa sense in which every crisis m the life ol an individual, a society, or a nation was a day of judgment, whereby their true past relation to the laws of eternal righteousness Was revealed and de- clared. It was the nature of law in every sphere to exact punishment for infringement of its sanction, or to com- mend for obedience and loyalty thereto. The principle held good in relation to the physical, social, moral, and spirit- ual worlds. To escape from the penalty of a violated law was as impossible as it was to miss its appraisement when re- spected. Nevertheless the operations of the law of the spirit of life through obedience to the behests of the supreme lawgiver, whereby the true believer identified himself with Christ, pro- vided a means of escape from the penalty of the law. By the operation of the spirit of grace he was created a new creature in Christ Jesus, and his faith was counted to him for righteousness- worthiness. He was counted worthy in the Allworthy Christ-hence the Master inculcated the necessary habit of watch- fulness and prayer. In every crisis he who was at one with him could stand immoveable.

The Aber- j aman Original Band was successful in taking the first prize in the special competition for Welsh bands at New- town, North Wales, on Saturday last. It was also awarded the fourth prize in the chief contest, the test piece being "Wagner's Works." The band was under the direction of Mr J. A. Green- wood. Mr R. S. Howells is the band master. The band is to be congratulated on beating such a good band as Ferndale. Y.M.C.A. TEA AND SOCIAL EVEN- ING. — On Thursday last at the Lesser Hall the members of the Y.M.C.A. DEATH AND INTERMENT. On Wednesday afternoon the death oc- eurred very suddenly of little Gethin, the only child of Mr and Mrs Evan Phillips, 3 Mostyn Street. On Satur- day the interment took place at Maes- yrarian Cemetery. The Rev. M. Jenkins officiated. The mourners were: Messrs Evan Phillips, father; Richard Mor- gan, grandfather; W. R. FIRE BRIGADE.—A special, invita- tion was extended to Police Inspector Tom Davies last Monday to view the turn out of the Merthyr Fire Brigade. Our Inspector was highly delighted with the smartness of the men, who got the engine out and all equipped for any emergency, in just a fraction of a second under half a minute. PARISH CHURCH.—Holy Commun- ion was celebrated at 8 o'clock last Sun- day morning in St. Margaret's Church. Matins and Litany were read at 11 o'clock. The Te Deum was sung to Onsley's quadruple chant and the Bene- dictus to Fussell. Evensong was in- toned by the Rev. J. Sinnett Jones. The Magnificat was sung to Barnby, and the Nunc Dimittis to Monk. Mrs. Alfred Morgan, in the absence of Mr. H. Long, presided at the organ during the day.

Church: Defenders at Aberaman. A huge gathering of Churchpeople from Penderyn to Abercynon met on Thursday evening last in a field near Aberamau, to protest in no uncer- tain measures against the Welsh Church Bill. The Vicar of Aberdare (Dr. Green) presided. The speak- ers were the Revs. T. Jesse Jones, M.A., Rector of Gelligaer; Canon Camber Williams, M.A., Vicar of Lampeter, and the Rev. Griffith Thomas, L.D., Vicar of Carmarthen. The Chairman read telegrams ex- pressing inability to be present from Sir Arthur Boscawen, M.P., and Mr. Ormsby Gore, M.P. Eloquent speeches were made in both languages, and the speakers were loudly cheered. Notwithstanding the inclement weather the pro- cessions were a mile long, and there must have been over 4,000 Church- people present, beside many Non- conformists. In the course of a vigorous speech Dr. Green said that in view of the fact that so many arguments were being used against the Bill they should know what answer to give. A body of lies had got the start of the truth. They as Churchpeople did not intend to cease their anta- gonism to the Bill, which was most unjust and unrighteous. The ene- mies of the- Church had scattered a tremendous amount of misrepresen- tation, and no one had excelled Mr. Lloyd George in that particular direction. They would continue to pursue their defence of their Church until they led the nation to see the facts as they were. The right of the Church to, her property was a moral and equitable right, and if there was any difference between the Church and Nonconformist bodies it was due to her position by nature. The Church enjoyed that right by primo- geniture. (Loud applause.) The following resolution was moved by the Rev. Griffith Thomas, and carried unanimously :— This meeting of men and women assembled at Aberaman on the 19th day of June, 1913, out of every parish within the Aberdare Valley, irrespective of creed or politics, protests against the in- difference of the Government to the 1,089 petitions against the Welsh Church Bill sent to the House of Commons last year from Wales, signed by 556,402 persons over fifteen years of age; and con- demns the revengeful spirit which seeks to force the Bill through Par- liament with the avowed intention of thereby punishing the Church in Wales to-day for matters which are alleged to have occurred about a hundred years ago." The rev. gentleman said he did not believe that the Welsh Disestablish- ment Bill would be registered on the Statute Book, for Mr. McKenna was the most unfortunate Minister the Government had ever had. He had not yet registered a single Bill on the Statute Book. (Applause.) The Hirwain Band and the Church Lads' Brigade Bugle Band, played selections en route. The demonstrators of the lower part Of the valley, from Mountain Ash to Abercynon, assembled at the Work- men's Institute, Mountain Ash, the Ahercynon scction travelling by train and the Penrhiwceiber one walking up. The procession, extending nearly half a mile, started promptly to time, head- ed hv the Mountain Ash Vol. Band (conductor, Mr. W. Greenwood), the rear-guard being brought up by the Abercyncn Band. The stewards of the procession were Police Sergeant C. H. Boulton (chief steward) and Messrs. W. Jenkins, D. W. Howell, M. P. Rees, E. R. Rees, Fred Rees, and Morgan Ed- munds. The mounted marshalls were Col. Morgan Morgan and Mr. Harry Long, great assistance being also ren- dered by ex-P.S. Bryer. On leaving Mountain Ash the weather, which had hitherto been unfavourable, became pro- pitious. The following hymns were sung, "0 God, our help in ages past." "The Church's one foundation," and "Glorious things of Thee are spoken" to Haydn's "Austria."

I Baptist Cymanfa at Cwmaman The annual H Cymanfa" of the East Glamorgan Baptist Union was held on Wednesday and Thursday at Cwm- aman. It was intended to hold the meetings at the Park, but owing to the inclement weather the services were conducted at the various places of worship. Every service was very well attended, large crowds having come from different parts of the county. The union consists of 117 churches. Each sent delegates to represent them, who were catered for at the Public Hall, and were entertained for the night by members of the various denominations. Local Licences. Amount of Compensation Granted. The principal meeting of the County of Glamorgan Licensing Committee was held at the Law Courts, Cardiff, on Monday, to consider licences "referred" for compensation. The magistrates j present were Mr. J. 1. D. Nicholl (pre- siding), General Tyler, Captain Bostock (Gower), Messrs. E. W. M. Corbett, Godfrey L. Clark (Talygarn), Hopkin Morgan, R. L. Knight (Bridgend), F. H. Glyn Price, Henry W. Martin, and Charles Jones (Aberavon). In the case of the Butchers' Arms, Aberdare, in which Mr. T. Elias (Mer- thyr) appeared for the renewal authori- ties, and Mr. W. Thomas (Aberdare) for the registered owner (Mr. David Rich- ards), and the licensee (Mr. T. Clark), it was stated that there were 12 other houses within 100 yards of this house. The committee refused to renew the licence and offered EI,300 compensation. Time to consider the offer was given. Mr. C. F. Chambers appeared for the Marquis of Bute. Subsequently the offer was accepted. Mr. W. D. Phillips (Aberdare), who appeared for the freeholder, Mrs. A. S. Pleace, Rock Brewery, Aberdare, of the Engineer's Arms, Aberdare, renewal of the licence of which was refused, asked fo t650 compensation. The com- mittee offered £ 600, and this was ac- cepted. Mr. Elias represented the re- newal authorities, and Mr. W. Thomas the licensee, Mr. J. Luck. Regarding the Mason's Arms, Aber- dare, Mr. Elias appeared for the renew- al authority, and Mr. W. Thomas for the owners, the executors of Mr. Thos. Jones, Aberdare. Evidence was given that the house is small and that there aro other houses near. Renewal of the licence was refused. As compensation £ 2,100 was asked for, and the com- mitteed offered £ 1,600. Time to con- sider the offer was granted. Aberdare Football Sup-, porters' Club. A public meeting of the Aberdare Foot- ball Supporters' Club took place at the Market Hall on Thursday evening last for the object of hearing a further ad- dress by Mr E. J. Petch, on behalf of the movement. Mr T. Johnson occupied the chair. He asked the company pre- sent for their co-operation in the watch scheme. The directors of the town team were determined to get good men for the object of gaining promotion, and this could be brought about only by collect- ing the sum required. Mr E. J. Petch, organiser of the watck scheme, said that he was given to under- stand that a representative of the Aber- dare Football Club was at present busy making fixtures for Division II. of the Southern League for next season. Unless they as supporters and the public in general would put their shoulders t. the wheel, those fixtures would not be fulfilled. It remained entirely with the general public to say whether the team would be a success or not. The sum re- quired by the administration of his watch scheme was < £ 250. His object in coming there was to start the watch scheme by means of issuing and selling the sheets to willing helpers. The chief prizp was a gold watch, valued £ 5 5s Two other prizes, viz., a silver medal and a. silk muffler, would be awarded to the person selling the, largest number of tickets by Messrs Jack Williams, Cwmaman. and Tom Phillips, Trecynon.
