Transfers. The licence of the Bruce Arms, Mountain Ash, was transferred from Daniel P. Jones to Dd. Wm. Richards. Mr Rees Thomas applied for the transfer of the licence of the Crown Hotel, Aberdare, from John W. Hek to Rees Thomas, who was 20 years lessee I and occupier of the Iron Bridge Hotel, Aberdare. Both were granted.

Drunk. John Jones, in Green Street, Aber- dare, 10s. and costs. I

Children on Licensed Premises. Thomas Edwards, Market Tavern, I' Aberdare, was summoned for allowing children to be on licensed premises, contrary to the Children's Act. Defendant's daughter was present in court instead of the defendant. Mr vV. 'lhomas defended. Police Sergt. T. J. Williams said that at 8 p.m.. on Saturday, Jan. 2nd, he visited the Market Tavern in company with P.C. Francombe. He proceeded to the kitchen and there saw two men, seven women and two children. Most I of the grown up people were drinking. He asked Miss Edwards where her father was, and she replied that he was not well, and had gone to bed, and that she was in charge of the house. One of the children belonged to a man ¡ named Cook, and the other to a David Price. When spoken to the former said he had come in with his wife and child to shelter from the rain. He had ordered a drink, but had not then 00- tained it. Witness told him he would be reported. He asked Price's boy where his father was, and the boy re- plied that he was in the bar. The father then walked in and witness asked him why he brought his boy into a public-house, and he replied: I asked Miss Edwards if I could put him in the kitchen while I was having a drink in the bar." Miss Edwards said she did not remember him asking any- thing of the kind. Witness told Miss Edwards he would have to report the case, and 6he replied, Don't do that] I will see it won't occur again." In reply to Mr Thomas' cross-ex- amination witness said he did not see men being supplied with drink in the kitchen, but there were drinks on the table. I Mr. Thomas: You know the landlord has been laid up for a considerable time?—Yes. Clerk: Is the kitchen regularly u&ed for drinking purposes?—Yes, on Satur- day nights. Mr. Thomas addressed the Bench, and said that defendant had been a licensee for 25 years in this district, and up to the present time nothing had been known against him. He was a man who had conducted the house to the entire satisfaction of the police. Mr Edwards was now seriously ill, and was unable to attend to business. He ex- tremely regretted the oversight. The Stipendiary said that the Bench had decided to dismiss the case on pay- ment of 10s. costs. There would be no conviction recorded. II

Children's Fathers Fined. Walter Oook, Cardiff Road, and Dd. Price, Cobden Street, fathers of the two children found on the premises, were then called to answer the charge of causing their children to be in a public- house. P.S. T. J. Williams again proved. The former defendant was fined 5s. and costs, and Prioe, who was not pres- ent, was ordered to pay 10s. and costs.

Wedding Arranged In Court. Sarah Farley, Hirwain, summoned Thomas Burke, of the same place, to show cause, etc. The parties looked very respectable, and were about 21 years of age. Complainant said she gave birth to a boy on Dec. 21st last. He had not paid I her anything. » Defendant went into the witness box and admitted paternity. He earned I 30s. a week Stipendiary: Why don't you marry that nice young girl? Defendant made an inaudible reply. Stipendiary: Wouldn't you rather marry her than not?—Yes. Stipendiary (to complainant): Are you willing to marry him? I Complainant: Yes, sir; I would only be too pleased for the sake of my little child. Stipendiary: Don't you think you can arrange the marriage if we ad- journ this case for a month? It is a pity for these two young people to spoil their careers. We will adjourn the case for a month for you (defendant) to marry her. It is the best thing you can do.

On the Black List. Mrs Margaret Williams, Godreaman, was brought up at the instance of P.C. Edwards, Aberdare, for being drunk Edwards, Aberdare, for being drunk and disorderly. It was stated that de- fendant was on the black list. The constable said he saw defendant in Monk Street on the 16th inst. She was very drunk, and was using bad language. A large crowd of people had gathered there. He requested her to go away and she became abusive. He then took her to Aberdare Police Station, where she was detained. In reply to the Stipendiary witness said he had no idea where Bhe obtained the drink. Defendant told witness she was not in Monk Street, and that she was in her mother's house. Fined 20s. and costs or one month.

"I Expect So." Thomas Holloway was summoned for being drunk and disorderly. The constable was not present to give evidence, and the defendant was asked, Is it true you were drunk?" Defendant: I expect so. I don't re- member much about it. Fined 10s. and costs. I

Will Keep the Peace for Ever. Sarah Reynish was summoned by Annie Rees for assault. The parties live in Stag Street, Trecynon. Mr. W. Thomas was for complainant and Mr T. W. Griffiths defended. Mr. Thomas, after consulting Mr. T. W. Griffiths and his client, said he was agreeable to withdraw the summons, both the defendant and complainant to be bound over to keep the peace. The complainant (Mrs. Rees) was thereupon bound over in the sum of £10 to keep the peace for six months. The Stipendiary put the question in Welsh to defendant, as to whether she was prepared to keep the peace for six months. Defendant: Yr wyf yn foddlawn cadw'r heddwch am byth. (Loud laugh- ter.) ("I am willing to keep the peace for ever.") The parties then paid the oostt. and left the Court.

Sudden Death at Hirwain. Quite a gloom was cast over the vil- lage of Hirwain when the news of the death of Mr Henry Haywerd became known. He was the youngest son of j the late Robert Hayward, Gloucester, and of Mrs. Hayward, now of Swindon. He passed peacefully away on Saturday morning, in his 34th year, at Hi^n Street, the residence of his mother-in- law, after only two weeks illness, of Sleurisy and pneumonia. He was a .W.R. relief signalman at Hirwain, and was highly esteemed by his numer- j ous friends and comrades. M- pathy is extended to the sorrowing young widow and her three little chil- dren in their sad bereavement. The interment took place on Tuesday at the New Cemetery, Hirwain. The Rev. Dewi Williams, Vicar, officiated. There was a very large, representative gathering of railwaymen, including the Stationmaster of Hirwain. The mourners were: Master Willie Martin Hayward, son; Miss Mildred Hayward, daughter; Mrs. Hayward, mother; Mr. Charles Hayward, tiere- ford; Mrs. W. D. Davies, mother-in- law, Hirwain; Miss S. A. Watkins, j Cwmdare (cousin); Mr. W. Davies, cousin, Aberaman Sergeant Thomas, Resolven. Floral tributes were sent by the fol- lowing :—Harp, wife and children; wreath, mother and brother and fami- ly a beautiful wreath was also sent by the G.W.R. Staff. The bearers were Messrs H. Hatton, J. Evans, T. Bevan, Jake Evans, B. Lawtton, H. Hamman. It is sincerely hoped that Mrs. Havward, who has been seriously ill, will soon be on the road to recovery.

Local Landowner's Bonus for Recruits. Mr. Godfrey Williams, J.P., of Aber- pergwm, speaking at a recruiting meet- ing held in Glyn Neath on Tuesday, said he was proud of the record of Wales and of the valley. Fifty per cent. of his own men had joined the colours, but he was anxious that there should be no slackening in the rate of recruiting. He, therefore, made an offer of the gift of ten freehold plots to the first ten men who enlisted that night for foreign service, the only condition being that the applicant should build a dwelling- house, within a reasonable time. Thus could be formed the nucleus of a village which might be called "Heroes' Corner." Mr. Williams hoped that other landed proprietors would follow his example. Addresses were also given by Col. Edwards Vaughan, Rlieola; Major J. E. Thomas, V.D., Captain Mainwaring, Mr Rees Howells, M.E., Mr. T. Wil- liams, schoolmaster, and the Vicar of Aberpergwm. Councillor E. J. Hopkins presided. Mr. Eben Powell gave a song. Several soldiers who are on a visit home from the front were present. Nine or ten young men enlisted that evening.

TEMPERANCE UNION. — At a special meeting of the above Mr. Dan Symonds was unanimously elected secretary in the place of Mr. T. ltex- nolds. The local branch has now a membership of nearly 200. ABERAM/TN. LECTURE. At the Workmen's In- stitute on Tuesday evening a very in- tere6ting lecture in connection with the Horticultural Society was delivered by Mr. E. Smith on "Garden Operjtion on Soil." Mr W. Western presided. 1 he lecturer was heartily thanked on the proposition of Mr. W. Payne, seconded by Mr. John Lee. R.A.O.B.—A very interesting function took place on Tuesday evening at the Beaufort Lodge, King's Head Hotel, the occasion being the presentation of a gold pendant to Bro. J. Parfitt, late C.S., for valuable services rendered during the year 1914. Bro. S. Rusbatch presided. Bro. Roger Thomas, R.O.H., P.P.G.P.E., in an appropriate speech, handed the gift to Bro. Parfitt on behalf of the lodge, and also gave an able ad- dress to the large number present. Bro. W. Rees, K.O.M., endorsed his remarks. Bro. PaTfitt responded in a neat speech.

CWMBACH. BILLIARDS. A record break of 51 points was made on the billiard table at the Workmen's Hall on Saturday last by Mr. Thomas Jones, billiard marker. LECTURE. On Monday evening at Bryn Seion Vestry and on Tuesday evening at Ynyscynon Schoolroom, Mrs. (Rev.) R. H. Davies delivered very in- teresting lectures on David Living- stone."

ABERDARE. MR. POGER PRICE, Rhyl, thanks the inhabitants of Aberdare for the kind interest shown by them in the Swift Vacuum Washer, the invaluable labour- saving invention. Mr. Price wishes it to be made known that he opened an office at 18 Market Square, Pontypridd, on Monday, January 18th. Miss Brittain, L.L.C.M., gave heT annual pupils' party in the Memorial Hall on Friday last. It was a success both from a convivial and musi- cal point of view. The pupils do great credit to their teacher. Each contributed to the programme. CARMEL BAND OF HOPE. Evan Davies also wrote thanking the lodge for a gift received. OBITUARY. After a brief illness the death took place on January 20th of Mins Jemima Evans, sister of Miss Evans, 4 Seymour Street. The funeral, which took place on Monday, January 25th, was strictly private. The officia- ting minister was the Rev. D. Silyn Evans. The bearers were as follows: — Messrs. A church parade was held under the auspices of the R.A.O.B. on Sunday last in honour of the curate in charge, the Rev. David Jones, who was recently made a mem- ber of the Darren Lodge, Cwmdare. There was a large representation from each of the surrounding lodges. The principal streets were paraded by the members in full regalia. At the church a very appreciable sermon was preached by the Rev. D. Jones, who is chaplain to the Darren Lodge. i

DEATH AND INTERMENT. — Mrs. Mary James, of 22 Cynon Terrace, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 65 years. She was one of the oldest and most highly respected members of Ramoth Baptist Church. Her remains were interred at Bryngar Cemetery on Monday last, the Revs. E. Cefni Jones and E. Wern Williams being the officiating ministers. Two of her chil- dren were unable to attend the funeral, viz.: Mr. Walter James, who is laid up with a severe illness, and Miss Edith James, who is resident in Australia, Several persons from Penderyn, her native place, were present. The chief mourners were: Mr. J. James, husband; fr. CLYN NEATH. ADDOLDY. On Sunday the pulpit of Addoldy was occupied by the Rev. R. H. Davies, B.A., Bryn Seion, Cwmbach. ACCIDENT. Master D. J. Thomas, eldest son of Mr. T. D. Thomas, check- weigher, sustained a fractured arm when drilling at the Neath County School Gymnasium last week. SERVICE OF SONG. On Sunday afternoon at Capel y Glyn a service of song was given by members of the Sun- day School. Mr. Kees Harries, deacon, presided. The service was greatly en- joyed VALEDICTORY. On Friday even- i ing a farewell concert was held at the Mason's Arms as a send-off to Mr. Mor- gan Williams, late Pontygwaith. The chairman was Mr. David Arthur, who gave an address. Mr. Williams has been through the South African War. lie went to France and was wounded in the battle of abasse. He was conveyed to Sheffield Hospital, and afterwards re- turned to his home, Islwyn Villa. He is now progressing, and hopes to be able to serve his King and country soon again. An overture was given by Mr. William Beechy. Song, Mr. Edward Evans. Violin selection by Mr. David Hughes, A.C.V. Song, Mr. William Deveraux. Address by Mr William Protheroe. Duet by Messrs. W. On Wednesday even- ing, January 20th, at the Public Hall a grand performance of the drama, "Joseph," was given in full character by the Addoldy Choral and Dramatic Society under the direction of Mr. D. t Druid Jones. All the performers did their work exceeding- ly well, and the actors enhanced their already good reputation. This is the fourth time for Addoldy Choir to per- form this drama, and as usual their efforts were highly appreciated. The proceeds go to the Belgian Fund. The secretary was Mr. William Perkins, assisted bv Mr. James Evans. EUGENICS. At the last meeting of the Literary and Debating Society the, president of the society, Dr. Samuel McClure, gave an interesting and instruc- tive address on "Eugenics." There was an excellent attendance. Dealing first of all with the historical side of the ques- tion, Dr. McClure read interesting ex- tracts from the Greek poets and philoso- phers, which showed that the ancients realised the importance of race regenera- tion. After tracing the growth of the Science of Eugenice and dwelling es- pecially on the movement under the in. fluence of Sir Francis Galton, the lec- turer dealt in a scholarly manner with the aim and objects of present day Eugenists, and analysed the basis of the j science they had founded, and ap- propriately called "Eugenics." Its 1 fundamentals were dealt with in such a way that one felt thoroughly convinced of the extreme importance of the prin- ciples advocated. The relative influenco of heredity and environment—or nature and nurture—were examined, and inter- esting statistics, including local figures, were given, showing beyond doubt the vital importance of hereditary factors ¡ in the making of the race. Proposed practical policies were also considered, and although doubtful of too great an interference by the legislature, control to some degree, it was maintained, would no doubt have beneficial results, especi- ally in cases of epilepsy and insanity; and although it was still doubtful I whether heredity or environment was the greater danger in phthisis and its kindred diseases, some control here, toOj would certainly have beneficial results. It was also submitted that a great deal of good could be done by means of educative influences. Thanks are due to the Doctor for his very fine lecture on a subject of such importance, and the clear and interesting way in which so delicate a subject was treated. CWMCWRACH. ACCIDENT. — Gomer Davies, Glan- nant Terrace, sustained a fractured collar bone and injured ribs on Wednes- day night while working at the Empire Colliery. He is progressing favourably. WOUNDED. Among the draft of wounded soldiers which arrived in Car- diff recently was Private C. C. Devous. Before the war he was employed by the G.W.R., and resided in this neighbour- hood. He has now been sent to his home in. Tiverton. RECRUITING. On Tuesday even- ing a recruiting meeting was held at the Council Schools. Councillor Rosser Jenkins presided. Addresses were given by Col. Lewis, Venallt Terrace, who is with the Seaforth Highlanders stationed at Barmouth, and S. Landfield, Glannant I Terrace, who is with the Army Service Corps stationed at Deptford. Both men looked well. MISSING. — Mr. and Mrs. Hiscock are in great anxiety concerning the whereabouts of their son, Lance-Corporal I C. Hi acock, who has been reported < wounded^ and missing. I CROSS ON PTG'S EAR. — At Neath Police Court on Monday Edward Rich- ards, farmer and pig dealer, Ynysarwed, was summoned for cruelty to a pig.- David Hughes, caretaker at the Nearh Slaughter-house, said that on the l^th inst. he saw a pig which defendant had brought to the building, and which was bleeding from the ear. He found that a- cross had been cut on the pig's par, and defendant said that that was how he marked it.—Dr. Morris said that a por- tion of the ear had been cut off, and it was bleeding freely. The pig was sutfer- ing great pain. He had never seen a pig marked in that way before.—When spoken to by P.C. Devereaux defendant admitted the offence.-A fine of 20s. and costs was inflicted: LETTER FROM THE FRONT. — Mrs. Saunders, 61 John Street, has re- ceived a letter, dated January 17th, from her husband, Mr. Jack Saunders, who is at the front.
