Postman Conscientious Objector.…
Postman Conscientious Objector. Walter Williams, Herbert Street, Aberdare, postman, applied for exemp- tion on conscientious grounds. Appli- cant had sent in the form handed to him a fortnight ago, and some of his statements were as follows :—Had ad- vocated universal brotherhood for i number of years and objected to parti- cipating in war on moral grounds; re- fused to undertake any work under the auspices of the military. He referred the Tribunal to the following, as per- sons of standing who could bear witness to his conscientious objection to war: Mr. Lodwick, Rev. T. Edmunds and Mr John Davies, Tanybryn Street. In re- ply to the question as to whether he had made any sacrifice for his opinion, appli- cant wrote: I have been held up to public abuse by my associates in my work, etc." To the question: "Are you willing to undertake work of na- tional importance?" applicant wrote: I am at present employed on work of national importance." The applicant was called in, and in reply to the chair- man said he was not a member of any church, but he frequented Carmel (B.) Church. He had formed his views re- garding war at the time of the South African War. He had one brother, 35 years of age, in the Army. There was another brother living in Trevor St., but he did not know whether this man had joined He had not read v ery much about the war, but he did not agree with the war.—Applicant handed a letter to the chairman. This transpired to lie a letter from the Rev. Thomas Edmunds, who wrote that Mr Walter Williams had applied to him as his minister for testi- mony as to his Christian character. He had known Williams for two years, and those who knew him longer confirmed his (Mr. Edmunds') impression of ap- plicant's objection to war on moral rather than on religious grounds. Mr. T. Walter Williams: Do you often have a personal conversation with Mr. Edmunds?—-No. Mr. Williams Have you ever had a conversation with him ?—Yes, but not on this subject. Mr. Williams So he has no means of knowing your objections?—He knows 1 am of this view. Mr. Williams: How does he know- is it because you have told him?—Not exactly. Mr. Williams How often have you had a conversation with him?—Three or four times. Mr. Williams: Have you ever dis- cussed the war with him?—No. Finally, applicant was asked to go be- fore the Medical Board, and the case was consequently adjourned.
