NAVAL AND MILITARY WAR PENSIONS…
NAVAL AND MILITARY WAR PENSIONS COMMITTEE. Councillor Wm. Thomas presided over a meeting of the Aberdare Naval and Military War Pensions Committee held on Thursday. There were also present: Messrs. T. Botting, B. Brace, J. Grif- fiths, J. S. Thomas, John Evans (Aber- cwmboi), Mrs. F. Hose Davies, Mrs. T. Jones (Uirwain), Miss B. Grirfiths and Mrs. Evans (Jubilee Road), with Mr. H. T. Goidsworthy (treasurer), and Mr A. Watkins (secretary). State Pensions. The Committee considered several claims for State Pensions by disabled soldiers who had been refused pensions by the Chelsea Commissioners, and di- rected the Secretary to refer such claims to the members of the committee who resided near the claimants for investi- 1 14 gation and verification of the state- ments made by them. It was also felt that a more thorough system of visiting generally should be organised, so that the- positions of ail persons receiving benefits under the Committee's administration should be periodic-ally reviewed by the Commit- tee. The Secretary undertook to give effect to this suggestion. Edueational Crants. Applications by two discharged soldiers for educational grants under Part I. of the Statutory Committee's Regulations to enable them to resume their pre-enlistment commercial courses were considered, and it was decided that temporary assistance be given in these cases pending the consideration oi the whole question of Training of Dis- charged Soldiers. More Publicity. Several members expressed the opin- ion that the activities of this Com- mittee were not sufficiently known in the district, and that it wa-s quite possi- ble that some men, when discharged, were not aware of the existence of any committee who con id in any way offer them any assistance, and therefore were suffering unnecessary hardship. To this the Secretary replied that every man upon discharge is given a card by the Army Authorities directing him to the Secretary of the Local War Pensions Committee, whose name and address is given thereon. Further, when this Committee was established, notices were sent to and posted at every Post Office throughout the Urban Dis- trict giving the name and address of the secretary, and those of the members of the committee operating in the various sub-districts. He would undertake to again issue notices for. posting in public places. Clerical Assistance. The Secretary reported that the Council had authorised him to adver- tise for an assistant clerk. Cuder the Pensions Bill now before Parliament, three-fourths of the administration ex- penses of Local Committees would be borne by the Statutory Committee, the remaining fourth fulling upon the local rates. The. Committee confirmed the action of the Council in granting the Secre- tary an assistant clerk, undertook to pay three-fourths of his salary out of their funds and decided that the Chairman of the Conimilttee should take part in making the appointment.

There was collected in the Parish for Church purposes during the past year a sum of £ 218 16s. 9d., of which .€31 6s. 7d. was for special purposes, and X71 10s. 3d. for the reduction of the debt on the Parish Church. The accounts were adopted. The Vicar re-appointed Mr. George Watkins as his Warden, and -Ali-1. Sutherland was re-elected People's Warden. The Vicar appointed as his Sidesmen: For the Parish Church: Messrs. H. W. Anthony, F. John, J. J. Williams, R. Richards, E. Drewett, and J. Gough. For St. Gwynno's Mission Room: Messrs. W. Evans, W. Ambrose, P. Smith, W. Griffiths, W. Jenkins, and J. Perkins. The Parishioners elected as their Sidesnicii: -For the Parish Church: Messrs. W. Evans, W. Jones, W. Wyndham, W. A. Heggie, D. Roberts, J. Sutherland, People's Warden, then pre- sented the Easter offering, amounting to ,4.17 12s. 3d., to the Vicar as a small acknowledgment of their appreciation of the noble work he had done since he came to the Parish. The Vicar had laboured under many disadvantages in Abercynon, but the record of the past 16 years was one that any man might feel proud of. It was a record of con- tinual and uninterrupted progress in the work of the Church.—The Vicar, in reply, thanked the Wardens and Parishioners for their gift. In the past by his wish the Easter Offering, always went towards the reduction of the building debt. His chiel aim f-ince he came among them was to wipe out that debt. and to free the Parish Church I from the stigma of any encumbrance. That was now happily almost accom- plished, and lie felt justified in agreeing to their expressed desire that he should accept the Easter Offering as a personal gift. In the pact they had accom- plished much. There was much still before them, but with their kindly sym- pathy and loyal co-operation he looked to the future with confidence.

EISTEDDFOD COMMENTS.
EISTEDDFOD COMMENTS. BY F.A. Another gigantic success has been achieved by the workers of the MOUll- U,in Ash Cottage Hospital Eisteddfod Committee, for the public roUed up handsomely. At one time there were oyer 8,000 persons present, and in addi- tion to the tickets sold in the collieries, a sum of about zC150 was taken at the gate. The music selection committee made some very excellent selections. Yet on the other hand there were some very unwise ones—vide the adjudica- tors' remarks. Mr. Davies is particularly happy as a judge. Ho has a delicate discrimin- ation, and is a fearless fault-tinder. Wherever he had a chance to point ont the faults in Welsh singing he did so with a vengeance, and also rubbed it in. The chief choral, in his opinion, was a failure, and the Penrhiwceiber Choris- ters won away from the nearest bv the length of the valley. The runners up as far as singing is concerned made two lamentable errors, although Mr. Davie.s only referred to one. Errors in the Hallelujah Chorus only arise from a "too certain" spirit or from. pure ignorance. The action song may be dismissed in one word—poor. The second choral was a delightful competition, and offered no cilliieulty to the adjudicators. The Male Voice was fairly good, and the winners may consider themselves lucky that Mountain Ash boys were not up against tllem. The boys' solo brought out that charming little singer, David George F-uirdiman. He has a voice like a silver bell and perfect intonation. The tenor crowd was woefully weak, and Mr Todd Jones again scored. A most refresh- ing competition was the Juvenile Choirs, and proved a source of great pleasure. Mr. John Williams." the Mount bf.sso, takes a lot of beating, and he scored on several occasions. The president, Lord Aberdare, and his lady, were present in the afternoon, '.ccompanied by the Hon. John H. Bruce. ,1r. Watkins earned high enconiums for his work in the test rooms, as did Madame Alicia Cove and the Revs.. Gwmryn Jones and Rd. Williams. Mr., D. T. Evans, the ex-secretary, did veo- man service on the platform. Mr. Davies and his co-adjudicators expressed their delight with all the arrange- ments. Field Marshal Sem Davies and a host of willing stewards made every- body comfortable. -0: fruited und Published at their PriutiEg; Works, 1M Cardiff Strwt, Aherdare„ c 111 tht, County of Glamorgan, by the, Proprietors, W. l'ugb and J, L.
