ENGLISH CONGREGATIONAL. — Special preaching services were held at this chapel on Sunday, when the Rev. Mr. Evans, Penarth, preached eloquent sermov". The accompanist was Miss Blodwen Matthews.. The Hpv. Morgan Jenkins, pastor, con- ducted the services. HOME FROM FRANCE. Corpl.' Willie Lloyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Lloyd, Ann Street, has come home on leave from France. He is of late stationed in dug-outs attend- ing to telephone messages. Corporal Lloyd belongs to the 18th Welsh Regi- ment. PACKER'S DAY. A treat was given on Llanfabon Fields on Thurs- day in celebration of Mr. Thomas Packer, Tirwaun Isaf Farm, who attained his 103rd year on that day. There was a good attendance at the treat and sports, and Mr. Packer himself was present to witness the proceedings. He was born at Cog Farm, Sully, on June 22nd, 1814. Mr. Packer's eyesight is very bad, but otherwise he enjoys good, health. BETHANIA S.S. held their anni- versary services on Sunday. A prayer meeting was held in the morn- ing'. and musical programmes were arranged for the afternoon and evening. Mi'. Daniel Thomas occu- pied the chair in the afternoon. MISKIN. YOU will be pleased after, calling at JAY'S, t MILITARY". Private Ernest Speake, 13 Gladstone Street, is home on six days' leave. He enlisted 13 weeks ago in the 3rd Battalion, East Yorks, and is training in Withersea, Yorkshire. Previous to enlistment he was employed at the Penrikyber he was employed at the Penrikyber Coiliery. A PRETTY WEDDING was solemnised at Llanwonno Church on Saturday last by special licence. The contracting parties were Miss Margaret Williams, third daughter of Mr. Joseph Williams, 30 Kingscraft Street, Mountain Ash. and Mr. William Olden, 34 Thomas Street, Miskin. The bride, who was attired in a nigger ,and blue shot silk dress with white leghorn hat with orange blossoms, was attended by Miss Martha Jones, Abercynon, and Mrs. May Isles (sister), who acted as bridesmaids, both being attired in silver grey costumes with white hats. The bride was given away by her father, and Mr. Enoch M. Williams performed the duties of best man. On returning a sumptious breakfast was partaken. The happy couple left for Aberystwyth, where the honey- moon is being spent.

MILITARY MEDAL. News has been received that Private Robert Pugh, Cardiff City Battalion, has been awarded the military medal for conspicuous bravery. Private Pugh is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pugh, Pen- rliiwceiber, late of Ynysybwl. Previous to enlisting he was a meri- ber of the teaching profession under the Rhondda Education Authority at Tonvpandy. ARMY PROMOTION. Lieut. D. O. Jones, son of Mrs. Jones and Mr. Edward Jones, J.P:, Tynywern, agent for the Ocean Coal Co., has been promoted Captain in the Welsh Engineers. Captain Jones enlisted at the outbreak of war with the Publip Schools Battalion, and later received his commission in the Royal Engineers of the Welsh Army Corps. His many friends at Ynysy- hwl are glad to hear of his advance- ment. MILITARY. Sapper Evan Jones, Royal Engineers, second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Cloth Hall, is home on leave from France, where he has seen service for the past 21- years. He enlisted at Fishguard at the outbreak of war. He has two brothers with the colours-Private Tom Jones, with the Welsh con- tingent of the R.A.M.C., Salonica, and Driver Victor Jones, A.S.C., in training. In civil life Sapper Jones was a grocer's assistant at Fish- guard. ANNIVERSARY. On Sunday I and Monday the English Congre- gational Church held their anni- versary services, when the Rev. J. Ilenry Thomas, Cardiff, delivered very impressive discourses on the following subjects: — "Divinity of Labour,' "Spiritual Aviators," and "The Welfare of Eternity." On Mon- day evening the Rev. E. Griffith Evans, B.A., Cardiff, delivered an eloquent sermon on the "Message to the New Age." Rev. J. T. Jones, pastor, conducted the services. Mr. David Smith was precentor, and Mr. Tom Jones organist. HOME. ON LEAVE. — Sergt. Jack Hughes, of the R.M.R.E., came home on Monday, after being on the Western front since the outbreak of war. Hughes was called up as an old reservist, and drafted abroad immediately. He is the youngest son of the late Mr. Tom Hughes, of Bryngomer, Ynysybwl .-Private Joe Lewis, youngest son of Mrs. Lewis, 118 Robert Street, Ynysybwl, was home on leave during the last week.— Private Rees Davies, of the Welsh Regiment, is now home on leave from Liverpool. Previous to his enlist- ment he was in the employ of the Ynysybwl Co-operative Society's Butchering Department.
