MOUNTAIN ASH NOTES. BY L rÓI.FEn. A preacher bused lit., discourse I tiu- otiter Sunday on those words in revelation. "And there shall be no more sea," and in the tourof his j remarks said that the average ailor, who had spent most ot his life on the briny, would not loci j much at home- if there wen.- no sea | in the Great Bevond. • i Well, lludyard Kipling arrived at | the same conclusion. 1 have not his exact \ord before me now. but ilicro is one passage in those par- ticular verses who re x the sailors (now transplanted to Heoxen) i threaten to go on strike. and thev declare' to the Aliniglit- "Take haek your golden iiddies, 0 are off to open sea. But an eleventh-hour settlement was arrived at, and the sailors won: on all points, for wo Are told that "The good Lord raised up- the sea to him," and that the sailors were j satisfied for ever after. One humorous old divine used to emphasise those words "In my Father's house are many man- j .sions," and he would go on to say: There is a large bathroom, where the Baptists will be quartered, be- j cause they are so fond cf water: there is a huge drawing-room, and xhat room will be the headquarters ot the Church of England, because they are the aristocratic party, Then there is the kitchen, where the fires burn round the year. T'h;s will bo set aside for the Methodists, be- cause they are such believers in hell Jire. And in the rotin facing the north, the coldest-room in the build- ing, will bo housed the Unitarians, because they are such a cold and emotionless people. By the way, a Congregational minister at Bangor, the Rev. H. N. Henderson, has resigned the. pastor- ate of tho English Congregational Church, Bangor, with a view of be- ing received and ordained as a cler- gyman of the Church of England. Giving his reasons for taking thi-s sttp, he said that Congregational- ism did not give hospitality to jiberal thought and progressive activity, whereas the Church of England, on the other hand, gave hospitality to High and Low Chureh- men, Conservative and Liberal theo- logians alike. Weil, there is a difference between one Congregational Church and .mother, I presume. The Ik-v. K. •I. Campbell was not turned out of the City Temple because of his Now Theology. They gave him perfect liberty to preach his Liberal theolo- gy and his Labour politics. He loft Nonconformity for quite othci- reasons. No more heretical theo- logian can be found in any orthodox church to-duy than the T. Uhondda Williams, yet hi.s Congre- gational Church at Brighton find no fault in him. But was there not a terrible fuss in Church of England circles recently when the Dean of Purham, who is not very touud iu i all the 39 Articles, was made Bishop of Hereforn- I n afmii the Rev. H. N. Henderson will have j to make one further move if he is searching for a pulpit which pro- vides hospitality for liberal thought a nd progressive nctlnty. Someone has been bungling over the new Treasury Notes, and no end of mistakes have been made in tak- ing the new 10s. notes for £ 1 onœ. We had grown tised to the red 10s. notes, and yet some Government offi- cial evidently thought it was too pimple to have notes of varying and distinctive colours, and so the new 10s. notes have been made as like the £ 1 notes as they possibly could be. 7 I know of experienced assistants and bank officials being quite taken off their guard with the new notes, and mistakes have happened. Many j hoped that the Government would revert to the old red colour, but no, the new notes are to go 011, but there is to be a blight alteration. What the alteration is will be seen from the f,)IioiA-in, Secretary to the Treasury an- nounces that it has been arranged to print. the number, which ap- pears in the left-hand bottom corner and the right-hand top corner 01 Ills, currency notes of tin- uew de- sign, in rod instead of in black as from December 16, or as soon there- after as is found prndicable. The s-eries of notes with the prefix 'A' will be completed with the number in black, and the printing of the number in red will begin with the series having the prefix 'B.' The legal tender of the notes previously issued on which the number is printed in black, will not be efl'ect- ed."
