EDWARD WIGLKY.—A large circle of acquaintances will deeply miss the familiar figure of Mr Edward Wiglcy, ihe son of MRS Wigley, of Q'uty-sutet, whose death occurred on Saturday morning, after a lony illness, in his 27th year. PRESENTATION OF MISS MORI:IS, OF Cooili, Among the presentations at the Drawing Room on Monday were those of the Honourable Rosamond Guest, by her mother, Lady Witnborne Miss Morris, of Coomb, by Lady Hills-Johnes; Mrs Edward Powell, by her mother, Lady Pryce-Jones and Lady Randel, by Lady Hawkesbury. WE regret to learn that Mr R. M. Thomas, the Town Clerk of Carmarthen, was taken seriously ill on Thursday, the 14th inst., whilat cycling between Bettws-y-Coed and Barmouth. He was so over- powered by the intense heat that he had immediately to proceed home. At one time his condition was very serious; but we are glad to learn that an improvement has set in. TRINITY COLLEGE, LONDON, EXAMINATION IX PIANOFORTE PLAYING.—This examination was held at the Llanelly Centre on Tuesday 12th inst., Dr Gordon Saunders, of London, being examiner. DEATH OK MIss BESSIE JONES.—We sincerely regret to announce the death of Miss Bessie Jones, the second daughter of Mr Tom Jones, Mansel-street, which occurred on Wednesday morning (20th inst.), after a short illness. Miss Jones wasa prime favourite with her numerous friends, and her death, at the early age of 25 years, will come as a shock to those of her age of 25 years, will come as a shock to those of her acquaintances who had not heard of the serious character of her illness. e Carmarthen Literary and Scientific Institution. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting was held in t'le Rerdmg Room [ on Tuesday eveuing. Principal Evans presided. Professor Moore, in moviug the adoption of the committee's report, said that although it was gratifying to find that so many young people attended the Reading room still if those who were juso emerging hvm boyhood into manhood were *0 be brought into terms of greater intimacy thau .'hey were now, a movement would have to be initiated outsido the Institution, as tho mero fact meeting in a Reading-room was not sufficient..• /e was one portion of the. con nr'ttec's work to which he wished more particularly to n fer, and that was that which dealt with the attempt which had been made to found a class for modern languages. The services of an able teacher had been secured—Dr Schwartz, ot Narberth—and it was advertised in the local press that he was prepaied to conduct classes in German, Spanish, French, and Italian. Dr Schwartz had been ready to conduct the classes for his mere out-of-pocket expenses, so that the fees would be mnely nominal. Although these facts were widely advertised, less than a dozen persons had sent in their names M applications for admissiou to the classes. Ihe responsibily for the failure could not, at any rate, be laid at the door of the committee they bad, at any rate, done their best. Mr T. E. Brigstocke moved a vote of thanks to tna committee and the chairman. He had great diffidence in moving this, as some of tbe members had attended better than others, and he was one of those who had attended the worst. Mr Gwilym Samuel, in seconding the motion, expressed the regret of the committee that Principal Evans would not allow himself to be nominated for the presidency for another year. The motion was carried ncm. con. A vote of thanks to the donors of books, etc. was moved by Principal Evans, seconded by Rev A. Fuller Mills, and carried vcm. con. Mr D. Maurice Jones, in moving the re appoint- rcent of the honorary secretary (Mr II. A. Thomas), spoke iu very high terms of the efficient manner in which Mr Anthony Thomas had attended to the work. A Llanaithneyite's Success iu London, Jlr J. T. Davies, who has just been appointed Chairman of the Borough of St. Pancras Licensed Victuallers' and Beersellers' Trade Protection Association for the second time, is a Welshman of gwad coch cyfan, having been born in the parish of Llanarthnoy. it is with great pleasure we notice the Ruccess he has attained in business in the Metropolis. Welshmen in all parts of the world manage to make a mark in whatever business or occupation they enter. Mr Davies, we may say, was educated at Mr Alcwyn Evans' Academy, in this town, and he speaks of that gentleman with the greatest respect and esteem. The Licensing World and Licensed Trade Review of April 25th, gives a splendid portrait of Mr Davies, together with an interesting biographical sketch. This paper states :— "Our friend—Mr J. T. Davies. the subject of this sketch—was rather more than forty years since born on a cosy little farm at Holfavvr, Llanarthney, in the county of Carmarthen. When applied to for some particulars concerning his early life, he at once threw a lumihous light on why when in a strange land Welshmen have a habit of coming to the top.' Here, in the vernacular, is what J. T. Davies told us. I came to London four-aud-twenty years ago for the E.oise; but finding competition to enter the service so keen, I tnrned it up with disgust, and am now truly glad that I did so, a3 I am doing far better than I should bs if i-'i the Civil Service.' There are some sapient philosophers for ever prating of the imincibility of indiscriminate patience and perseverance. The.y are hardly ever of Welsh nationality. Mr Davies has any amount of patience and perseverance when the object he desires to achievo ia worth the exercise of the two virtues. But he novcr waste3 either tho one or the other in striving after the impossible. He looks well into the game, and unless to pay it i3 worth the candle, Mr J. T. Davies saves bis patience and perseverance for tho working out of aims in the realms of the possible. Ia these sketches it is our_ aim to present licensed victuallers as being many-sided citisens, often with instructive careers. In the case of Mr J. T. Davies we light upon a man one lesson of whose early life should save parents collectively thousand? of pounds they are now annually wasting on having their sons prepared for an over-crowded, badly-remunerated to the average Civil Servant—calling, and one moreover, the tasks of which offer no chance for developing those intellectual powers essential to success in any sphere of life. T m Since in wisdom and with disgust J. 1. Davios abandoned the Civil Service, he has gone forward, and has demonstrated the possession of gifts for which as an exciseman he would have had no more use than a cow has for a grand piano. He has bought and sold some three-score licensed houses has been favourably and widely known in connection with those well- known Kentish Town hostelries, the Carlton,' Sir Robert Pee),' and White Horse,' and is now com- fortably settled at [the 'Mansfield,' one of the most strikingly situate and value properties in all St. Pancras. Nor is it only as a licensed victualler that our friend has won respect in St. Pancreas. Ho has been one of its vestry men for five years and at the last election for the St. Pancras Vestry cams out, with 1,450 votes, fifth iu a list of forty candidates. His chief services to the vestry are in connection with his services as a member of the Highway and Rating Con lrn it tees, and on both of them he is the right man'in the right place.. 1 As chairman of the St. Pancras Society he is a popular ;:nd serviceable tower of strength to it; and has he not applied his energies to the task of securing a big success for the Society's annual dinner' As one H of its delegates to the Central Board he is held m appreciation and esteem by h:8 colleagues, and on various committees has rendered ycoman's service to his calling. During the most acute periods of the H a"itation against the Veto Bill, he not only managed to lead his own forces in St. Pancras in an effective manner against a measure now happily of the (lead and damned, but at meetings ( ailed by other societies to denounce it usually managed to be in evidence, and so show that he was heart and soul with his brother traders whenever or wherever they gathered together H in defence of their calling or their property. Mr Vavies is of course a subscriber to those two H noble and exemplary Trade charities —the School and-, H the Asylum, and in saying au rceoir to him the only touch of sadness in our note arises out of the knowledge H of the fact that Mrs J. T. Davies, who was for many H years his 'good right hand in domestic and business H affairs, does not now enjoy that robust health she H formerly possessed. That her health may improve is H the wish of all who have experienced the value of a H good wife. ■
