íTHE BOTTWISOGr BAZAAR.
í THE BOTTWISOGr BAZAAR. A GREAT SUCCESS. I The Bottwnog County School Bazaar, partly j reported in our last issue, has turned out to be j a great success, in spite of the fact that some person's in the district not only refused their patronage, but also, it is stated, expressed opinions calculated to mar the success of the event. The public generally, however, sup- ported the bazaar with genuine enthusiasm, the result being that the .sum of L500 has been, secured towards the object in view. The bazaar was opened on the second day by Mr George Yale, who took great interest in the matter, Mr Jonathan Davies, J.P., Portmadoc, who has done so much for education, being the chairman for the day. On Sat-u-rday, the last day of the bazaar, the proceedings were opened' by Mr Richard Roberts, of Pwllheli, a liberal supporter of lam good movements, the Rev J. R. Williams, chairman of the governors, and who has worked' indefatigably in connection with the event, being the chairman. J The weather was favourable, and' there were large attendances each day. The stalls had been I admirably arranged, and brisk trade was done at each of them. The hat-trimming competition ¡ for gentliemen was most amusing and popular, it I being under the supervision of Mr Griffith Owen, Sa-rn. The adjudicators were Miss Owen, Min- afon; Miss Williams, Post-office; and Miss Jones, Dinas. The museum, or collection of rare curiosities, in charge of Mr E. R. Williams, Bryncroesi Board School, assisted by many. others, dressed as "Oriental visitors," proved very attractive. The phonograph, under the charge of Master Eudaf Robvns-Owen, assisted by Masters John Jones, G. W. Griffith, and T. J. Griffith, was also well patronised. Lleyiu took to the modern ping pong tournament, feWaa in charge being Masters E. Thomas, Danieli Williiams, R. J. Williams, and R. Williams, and the electric battery came in for much attention. This, described as "a most shocking affair," was in the care of Mir R. Griffith, RJiiw Board' School. The other attractions, all of which were well patronised throughout, were the fol- I lowing :-Fairy Wells, under the charge of Misses Jeanie D. Evans and1 Edith E. Williams, assisted' by Misses Maggie E. Jones, Jennie P. Jones, Gaynor Morris, and Jennie Griffith. Bran Tub, the attendants being Misses Sydney I Evans, Laura Williams, Lizzie Jones, Hanna-h Jones, Sissie Jones, and J. A. Williams. Post, Parcel and Telegraph Office, als-o left Luggage Office, Misses Annie Williams, Maggie Jones, Laura. M. Hughes, Ellen Watkin, Emily Jones, and Ellen A. Griffith being, the officers. Tennis, Masters W. Wilson Williams, Richard Williams, Thomas Jones, and Richard Roberts. Chess and draughts, Masters L. 0. Hughes, W. Michael Owen, Hugh J. Griffith, and Griffith Jones. Doll-dressing Competition, adjudicators. Mrs Roberts, Tynewydd, Sarn; Miss Roberts- Jones, Crugeran: and Miss Evans, Ty'nvcoed. Nail-driving Competition for Ladies, adjudica- tors, Dr Thoma,s, Mr R. L. Griffith, and Mr H. T. Griffith, Sam. The stalls, particulars of which appeared in our last issue, were well looked after, and the trade done was most satisfactory. The Madryn stall was an excellent one, and a good sum was secured through the exertions of Mr and Mrs George Yale. Each day there was an excellent concert in the evening. The presidents were Mr Pritchard, Nanhoron; Mr R. Jones Evans, Llangian; and the Rev Canon Owen, Bottwnog; and the con- ductors were Messrs T. E. Griffith (Beren), Cenin Jones, Pwllheli; and G. Jones, Peny- bont. The performance of "Cinderella" by the school girls was excellent, and the singing of the Nevin Female Choir, led by Mrs Morgan Owen, was highly appreciated. Songs were also ex- cellently rendered by Miss Jones, Eifl Tem- perance, Pwllheli; Miss Mary Hughes, Pwll- heli and Mr T. Evans-Hughes, Colwyn Bay. The recitations by Ce-nin and Deiniol Fychan took exceedingly well. Miss Ethel Holt gave I some charming violin performances; and the pianoforte solos by Miss Netta Owen, Miss Enid Robyns-Owen, Miss Holt, and Mrs Morgan Owen were skilfully executed. Upon the opening of the proceedings on Satur- day, a telegram was despatched to the King, expressing the congratulations of the people of Lleyn to his Majesty upon his Coronation, and the Rev Canon Owen engaged in solemn prayer. Miss Mary Hughes effectively rendered the Coronaf on song, and the audience sang "God .Save the King." The grand final concert on Saturday night was presided over by the Rev T. E. Owen, and con- I ducted by Mr G. Jones. The programme in- I cludled the following items :—"Ymdaith Gwyr Harlech." the Pwllheli Male Voice Choir (con- ductor, Mr John Ellis). Song, Mr Hugh I Hughes. Mandoline selection, Mr Edward Ro- berts. Song, Mr Griffith Davies. ^juarette, Messrs John Ellis, William Williams, D. J. Jones, and James Ellis. Song'Mr Meirion Ro- berts. G., Wynn, and JE30 collected by Captain Evans, Ty'nycoed, in Africa. '-f8! h Among those returning home by the "Saxon," which left Cape Town on July 31st. and is due at Southampton on Saturday, is Lieutenant H. M. Pryce-Jones, of the Coldstream Guards.
,--A MAN WHO WAS NUMB.
A MAN WHO WAS NUMB. At Sharpness, Gloucestershire, a young man named Phillips, employed in the locomotive de- partment of the Sharpness Dock Company, has undergone a somewhat startling experience which originated in an insignificant manner. His account of the matter has been published as follows "I first felt a strange numb feeling in my left hand two years ago and then partially lost use of it. Early this year the same numbness ex- tended to my legs, and yet it was painful to set my feet on the ground. The feeling was hor- rible, and I could not make out what was the matter until it progressed, and I found I had in- cipient paralysis. Owing to the lac*, of control over my limbs, I had to cease work in January, for I would fall down while on duty. A doctor tried a galvanic battery, but I felt no relief. I then went into two hospitals Without result, and was discharged as incurable, my hand still use- less, and only with great difficulty could I walk." "But you appear to be all right in spite of the doctors' opinions?" remarked the representative of the "Dursley Gazette" who investigated the I case. "Yes," answered Mr Phillips, "but that is due to Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people. My mother persuaded me to take the pills regularly, and after a while-would you believe it ?-my arm and legs began to regain power, and that deadly numb feeling vanished entirely. You may be sure that I continued the pills, and after perseverance, I was enabled to recommence I work, to the great astonishment of all who had heard that I was paralysed and incurable. I feel as well now as I have ever been, and can do a hard day's work with anybody. Though some of the best medical men were powerless to do me good. Dr Williams' pink pills gave me back my health." Mr Bert Phillips is an athletic young man of twenty, and resides at 11, New Buildings, Sharpness. He is an active member of the Union Congregational Church, and is held in great esteem. When such severe cases as this are entirely cured by Dr Williams' pink pills it is not sur- prising that they are used with the greatest success in many minor ailments. They have re- I peatedly cured anaemia, indigestion, biliousness, eczema, rheumatism and sciatica, and have re- stored health in such serious disorders as "de- I cline," consumption, paralysis and locomotor ataxy. But only the genuine pills cure—known always by full title, Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people, on every box. Sold by all dealers, or supplied by the manufacturers, Dr Williams' medicine company, Holborn Viaduct, London, at two and nine a box, or six for thirteen and nine. ¡ To buy substitutes is waste of time and money.

! CARNARVON BOARD OFI .GUARDIANS.
CARNARVON BOARD OF I GUARDIANS. THE LLANDWROG RELIEVING OFFICER AND HIS ACCOUNTS. ) SERIOUS CHARG*ES. An extraordinary meeting of the Carnarvon Board of Guardians was held at the Workhouse on Saturday upon the requisition of Messrs Alfred Richards, J. R. Hughes, and W. G. Roberts .to consider a complaint against Mr Daniel Thomas, the relieving officer for the Llandwrog district. In the notice convening the meeting it was stated that at the ordinary monthly meeting of the guardians held on the previous Saturday, Mr Daniel Thomas presented three invoices from Mr Richird Hughes, grocer, Clynnog, for 5s, 10s, and 5s respectively for provisions given to or on behalf of Elizabeth Hughes, Cefn, Pentre Clynnog, on the 8th, 21st, and 28th July last, with the word "settled" written across the front of each bill; that upon I inquiry being made Mr Rich a re Hughes stated1 that up to Tuesday the 5th August he had not received payment of the bills in question, and that in his out-door relief list and receipt and expenditure book for the week ended Friday, the 1st day of August, Mr Daniel Thomas took credit for the payment of the bills referred to, and' I produoed the three bills with the word "settled" I written across the front of each in support of I such payment. Air Richard Jones, who presided, regretted that the guardiansi should have been called to- I gether to investigate such a painful matter, and explained that Mr Daniel Thomas was further charged" with having misappropriated a, sum: of I £70--£55 relief money and B15 which he had collected. A letter embodying these charges (had been seat to Mr Daniel Thomas, and an ex- planation was asked from him. In reply ha admitted the truth of the charges brought against him, fLll-d said that his sins were so great that he could1 not expect the guardians to for- give him. He therefore wished to resign all the offices held1 by him under the Board-namely, those of relieving officer, attendance officer, and collector, and he appealed to the guardians I to deal leniently with him and allow him time to pay the money. Mr W. M. Roberts1 asked if the guardians could accept the resignation under the circum- stances. The Chairman replied that they could. Replying to Mr J. R. Hughes, the Clerk said that the Board wou!d not have their hands tied in any way if they accepted the resignation. All the facts would be reported to the Local Govern- ment Board, who would correct any irregularity done by the guardians. Mr Alfred Richards expressed1 regret that so painful a matter should engage the attention of the guardian's. Taking the most favourable view possible of the cases, it must be said that Mr Daniel Thomas had pleaded guilty to grave charges. In addition to the cases already men- tioned, he would draw the attention of the Board' to what he considered a more serious charge. The guardians at a; recent meeting ordered the relieving officer to pay an old woman a sum of 9s for nursing an old lady 85 years of 1 age who lived close by, but she only received 6s, and the officer told her that it was he who pursuiaded the guardians to give her that sum. Though the old woman received' on3y 6s a re- ceipt had been made out for 9s. and this, he need hardly say, had been forged. The poor people had suffered as the result of the conduct of the relieving officer, and nurses could not be got to attend upon the sick because Mr Daniel Thomas had not paid them for previous services. The Clerk, replying to Mr W. Owen, said that a guarantee society would be held' respon- sible for the money due by Mr Daniel Thomas. He would' at once inform the society of the matter. Mr Richard Jones (Llandwrog) Do I under- stand that Mr Daniel Thomas owes us £70? The Clerk Yes, that is how we make it now. The auditor will take further steps, and may find that more is owing. Mr R. Jones: Is he entitled to superannua- tion ? The Clerk: No. he would not he in any case. Mr Jeffrey Jones asked if the guardians would! finish with Mr Daniel Thomas after accepting his resignation. Would thy have any further claim upon! him. The Clerk said they would have a claim upon I him to the extent of the deficiency. Mr Jeffrey Jones: No one else can step in and demand the money? Mr W. M. Roberts if the guarantee society would be responsible .to t'he sroArdian* if.' they accepted the Designation. Was ib not the duty of the guardiians to bring the case into court ? The Clerk said1 that the guarantee society would be obliged1 to pay the sum due after the books had been audited. Mr J. R. Hughes asked if it was not one of the provisions of the bond that the guardians I should report any irregularity to the guarantee society ? The Clerk replied that was not a provision, but he intended to do so. Mr W. Owen asked what was the amount of the guarantee. The Clerk £200 as a relieving officer and £20 as collector. Mir H. Parry. Carnarvon, propose.d that they should accept the resignation. J Mr Jeffrey Jones thought it would be better for them to appoint a committee of investiga- II tion. The Chairman explained that unless they ac- ¡ cepted' the resignation they would be obliged to suspend Mr Daniel Thomas, and if they only suspended him, he would still be in their service until the Local Government Board! had held an inquiry and Bad asked him to resign or dismiss him. Mr Griffith, Brvnsiencyn, thought it would be better to accept the resignation* and' then ap- point a committee. It was thelllre-solved to acoept the resignation and to appoint Mr Jones (Glan Peris), the Anglesey relieving officer, to discharge the duties of the office temporarily, aJt the salary paid to Mr Daniel Thomas. I Mr J. R. Hughes then proposed that the guardians tsbould pjesolve themselves iato a committee to make further investigations; but I I this wa.s outvoted, aad it was resolved, on the motion of Mr W. Owen, to advertise for a suc- cessor. The Clerk explained that the guardians could: Mt 'hand over to the new nuan all the appoint- ments held by Mr Daniel Thomas. If the new Education Bill came into force, they couldr not appoint him as compulsory officer, and the Registrar General under the new orders would ¡! not appoint a. relieving officer a registrar of marriages. The new man would be a relieving officer a>na a collector, and the salary paid to Mr Daniel Thomas for these servioes was JB64 and ten per cent. commission out all sums col- 8ected. Mr W. Owen sip,id he would' favour the ap- poin*ment of a good, man and offer him a salary of £ 100. pOlDWlent of a good, man and offer him a salary of £ 100. I ^is_was seconded by Mr Humphrey Williams. I Mr H. Parry, Carnarvon, proposed £90 as a salarv. Mr J- Mom-is Williams thought this was a matter for a. committee to decide. They should I be careful what- salary they paid, otherwise all the other relieving officers would' have a. good l'e3JSlOn to ask for ;an increase of salary. Mr J. R. Hughes also urged the guardians to oner £100 salary. If they did not offer a good salary to a man in such an important position, how could they expect him to be honest andi discharge his duties satisfactorily? Mr W. Jones said that an increase of JB36 at j one stroke was too much, and he was surprised' that Mr W. Owen, of all persons, should advo- cate it. He would be certain' of getting into a row with the electors (laugther). Mr W. Owen replied that each of the other officers received in the aggregate about JB150. but the district- of Llandwrog was one of the largest mid the most important in the Union, and icven if they offered £100 to the relieving officer of that parish he would' not receive so much as the others, because he would not be holding the other offices. A small salary was only a I temptation for a man to become dishonest. They should get the best man possible. I After some further desultory conversation, the Rev Owen Williams proposed that they should offer JS85 salary. He believed a man could live comfortably on that. When the; voting took place a majority was in favour of £90. It was decided also to appoint a committee.
