WEtLSIT] AMATEUR OUP. LLANDUDNO…
WEtLSIT] AMATEUR OUP. LLANDUDNO v. CARNARVON. Conjsideraible interest was taken in this contest, as it was the third meeting of tha teams in a week. The first two mait-ohes were in the senior cup competition, and the teams annexed a point each in each game. Notwithstanding the deplorable state of the ground on Saturday, a vigorous game was witnessed by a fairly large number. At the outset the local team showed that they intellldiedfighting with determination, and they SKXHI forced matters. A corner was conceded, but J. H. Jones cleared magnificently. The Carnarvon men, how- ever, soon returned to the Llandudno goal. E;ugih Roberts sent in a stinger, but Stal- lard saved splendidly. The ball was sent well down the field and Clelerve, the Jjlan- dudao Cf'ntre forward!, obtained possession. He smartly passed1 Evan Hughes, and then transferred' the ball to a colleague. The latte,r had a "pot," which went wide. iR. H. Roiberts secured the ball, and went away on his own initiative, ibut Pearson tack- led him effectively. This occurred more than once, and R. H. Roberts w.isely changed his bdics. His ultin ate centre put the iLla.nldudno goal in! t'rbuble continuialljy.. But owing to the brilliant plav of the full backs disaster was averted., From a, tre- mendous punt by one of the pair Cleenre got the ball, and was on the point of racing away when the ruled him off- side. Davies, one of his colleagues, trans- greased similarly shortiv afterwards. E,van Hughes sent a terrific shot down the field', and Trun Rdberts secured it. With hia. nsnal clevernsiis Tcm wriggled thiouigh the defence, but shot feebly. A minute later, Huøhi Roberts shot an inch or two to the wrong sidle of the bar. Carnarvon's first coal came from a lovelv ee nit ire bv R. F). Roberts, which Hupih Roiberts headed in. Immediateilv after t;his success, a oenaltv was awarded Oarnarvon. IFJvan Hughes. who took the kick, failed to snore. Half time arrived with the «core uncha.nged. íIn the second half Llandudno put more ;irfi'2vpuB into their work. |For tlhe major nxurtion of this half plaV was very etven. Two or three enrner kicks were granted the home team, and Hugh Roberts almost scored on two occasions. Carnarvon were rapidly igainintg the upper hand, and a few minutes before the end, Johnnie Jones raced rawa-v with the 'ball. He cleverlv eluded J. H. Jonee?. At the rieht moment he, oarted witih the ball. eerding it aloross to RI. W. Mobcirffii, wihio w%h a climW<n<r grotin-der 'hieglt Sft/%ljJard. The craime ended with ai win by two goals to GaiTtna,Tvon. This great success was largeTv attribut- able to the improved defence of the tea.m. "Both tihe fll,ll backs were very reliable thromgthout the game.

IHOLYHEAD RESERVE v. MENAI BRIDGE. The Holyhead Juniors were at home., on Saturday, the visitors beiintg the Menai Bridge eleven, who beat them by six) goala to three. There was nothing out of the oc- dinary in the play, and the spectators, who were few, evinced but little interest ill the event. The homesters were greatly handi- capped', and on the whole did not deserve to be beaten. Mr Lloyd Williams, of Bain- gor, was referee.

SUGGESTED WELSH FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
SUGGESTED WELSH FOOTBALL LEAGUE. To the Editor of the "Herald." I' Sir,—What has been long called for is a Welsh Senior Football League. The Com- bination this year is much below the aver- age of what it used to be, and interest in it has materially decreased. I think a move- ment shou'd be originated by the officials of the now flourishing North Wales Coast League to make three divisions, and I would suggest that the following clubs should be placed in the respective divisions: — Division I.—Bangor. Bagilit, Carnarvon, Connah's Quay, Denbigl^ Greenfield,, Holy- head Swifts, Holywell Vies., Druids. Chirk, Buckley Engineers* Llandudno Amateurs, Mold, Rhyl, and Saltney. Division II. — Bangor Reserve, Colwyn Bay, Glasinfryn Swifts, Holyhead Reserve, Llandudno Junction, iLlanberis, Hajirwet, Lf>echid Swifts, University, College, Pwll- heli, Penmaenmawr. and Portmadoc. Division III. — Bettwsyooed, Llandudno (Reserve, Junction Reserve, Tregarth Celts, Llanfairfechan. Menai 'Bridge, Colwyn Bay Celts, Rhyl Celts, Deganwy Rovers, and Penmaenmawr ReeeJ've. Although this is only a suggestion, I fail Although this is only a suggestion, I fail to see why it could not be carried out, and thus create much more interest in footbaJf matters in North Wales. I shall be glad to see some enthusiastic supporters of the I game expressing their opinion of this pro- posaJ in your columns.—I am, etc.. FOOTBALL WELL WISHER. —— ? £ ——
IiWALES AND THE ELECTIONI
Ii WALES AND THE ELECTION I INTERESTING SPEECH BY SIR J. HERBERT ROBERTS). Sir J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., paid a I surprise visit to the Colwyn Bay Liberal Club on Friday night, and delivered a brief ) speech, in the course of which he dealt with the general election from the Welsh point of view. He was very pleased with the j results which the Liberal party • had results which the Liberal party had achieved (hear, hear). The chief feature of II the election was that the country had stood true to its Liberal faith, and had returned the same, or perhaps a greater, majority than on the previous occasion. As to the future the immediate and essential task would be to destroy once and for all the absolute veto of the House of Lords (cheers). After that it was the duty of the Liberal Government to deal with the electoral law. there must be abolition of the plural vote; there must be a law to make it necessary I for all elections to be held on one or two, days; and in the third place a law, which h« thought would receive substantial sup- port on both sides of the House of Com- mons, to close all licensed premises on mons, to close all licensed premises on election day. Having done that, then they would proceed' to the essential measures I which made this election of vital importance < >o Welshmen and to Wales. He confidently I hoped that after long years of waiting they j in Wales would reap a rich and abundant harvest as a result of this memorable I victory.
WINTER AT HARLECH
WINTER AT HARLECH From "The Field." For those who can xz.so their legs, whether upon go f course or mountain, and who are susceptible to the influences of scenery whose charm and distinction knows no seasons, 'Harlech from January to April is hard to beat. Nobody in touch with the golfing world requires to be told that Harlech pos- sesses a first-class course of old standing, laid out over the sandy links which divide the high perched village uud castle from the t sea. l or the less initiated it will be enough to state that it is the best course in North Wales, that a roomy new clubhouse has just been erected within a stone's throw of the village near the first tee, and that the course is only crowded at meetings and during holiday seasons. Throughout the winter there are just enough local or visiting play- ers to provide matches for one another, and it ia merely the simple and widely recog- y z-1- I nised truth that exceptional pains are taken by the Harlech management to make the I visiting golfer feel at home upon the course. I We will leave this last, however, with its natural and varied hazards, its well-placed sand bunkers, its large and beautiful greens, its 'keen sheep and rabbit-nibbled fairway, as needing no further comment unless a; word be said for the almost matchless out- look it shares with the village of Harlech, which clings to the mountain slope imme- diately above it. I This, indeed, is the abiding glory of Har- lech. If crippled by some untoward fate and condemned to live upon a view, I know of none within these islands that would come nearer to making life still worth living. From most of the windows behind which a winter" visitor is likely to find himself, that incomparable panorama, alike at every season save for those inevitable interlude when all landscape vanishes in mist or storm, fills the eye with a picture that never wearies; for high in the foreground, perched on its precipitous rocky throne, rise the hoary towers and walls of the great Edwardian Castle, while behind it, as a fitting background, lie superbly heaped against the sky the mighty mass of the Snowdon range, the shapely peak of its monarch, wreathed more often than not in new-fallen snow, dominating the whole. Forging westward from these Snow don mountains for twenty miles into the Irish Sea stretches the long Carnarvon promon- tory of Lleyn, displaying on clear days its ribbons of yellow sand, its green pastures and farms, villages and manor houses, its array of isolated outstanding mountains, and those high storm-lashed headlands be- yond which the waves break among the isles and cares where the dust of saints and pilgrims innumerable lie around the frag- ments of their shrines. Scenes like these know neither winter nor summer, spring nor autumn. Sometimes the white peak of Snowdon gleams alone in mid-air above a world of dark cloud at others storm and shadow hang heavy over the nearer ocean, while far away in Lleyn the sunshine is lighting up every detail along its coast, and gleaming upon the white lines of break- ers hurling themselves against its iron capes. And as widwinter wanes and the longer days of February and March, often full of sun- shine. bring periods of peace over sea and mountain, you feel still more how fortunate you are to be enjoying, under conditions practically as favourable as summer, that corner of Britain which for form and -beauty and detail can challenge almost any spot in Europe. From the rock of Harlech, when the sea is calm and the days are bright- and the winds are etiU, the sunsets are unfor- getable. Night after night I have seen, as the sun dips like a ball of fire into the wes- tern waters. a long, broad trail of molten gold spread from the horizon across twenty miles of glassy sea till it fades among the ripples that murmur upon the sandy shore. I
THE LANDLORD AND THE RATESI
THE LANDLORD AND THE RATES I The rate collector for the Llandudno I Urban Council (Mr H. O. Evans) on Mon- day applied to the magistrates at the Petty Sessions for an order directing Mr R. H. Brown, of 42, Madoc-street, to pay JB8, the balance of rates on household property be- longing to the defendant and situated in Prospect-terrace and in another part of the town. Mr A. Conolly, the Town Clerk, I stated that the owners of ratable property let in weekly or monthy tenancies or in separate apartments could be rated instead of the occupiers of the premises. Mr Brown, said Mr Conolly had raised a point that the tenants in the houses in question were not weekly tenants but he had 'failed to produce any document to the Council in support of that contention. George S. Brown, nephew of the defen- dant, who collects the rents of the houses, stated that the tenancies in question were annual tenancies, and he produced four stamped documents constituting agreements to that effect with the tenants. Mr Conolly suggested that the words "annual tenancy" had been inserted since the signing of the agreements, and in the case of one of the documents there was a suggestion that the datrs had been altered. The Bench decided to make an order for { the payment of the amount. Mr J. E. Hallmark for the defendant said he assumed that their worships had no ob- jection to stating a case for appeal, if it should be decided to take that course. Mr James Porter (magistrates' clerk): You can serve the usual notices within the prescribed time.
