WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT The story opens with a powerfully dramatic scene at a house in Highgate. A murder has just been committed, and, to shield the criminal, his friends concoct a cowardly plot to decoy an innocent man into the house and accuse him of the crime. At the moment, Giles Black- sliaw, an avowed enemy of the murdered man, ruined and desperate, is seated outside the house. He is inveigled in and plied with drink, waking to find himself a prisoner, with a blood-stained knife beside him, and a dead body huddled in the corner of the room. The schemers soon discover, however, that in hunting for a victim they have caught a Tart-at.. Giles has no inclination to hang for a crime which he has not committed. The story proceeds with an unbroken flow of thrilling incident to a unique and powr-rfuliv dramatic climax. The heroine, Lucy Doveton, the inno- cent eausc of the drama, captures the symofithies of the reader at the outset, brinjrir-'g into the story an element of tender romance which ably balances the lively course of adventures and thrilling mysteries.
