Notes and Comments. WHAT ARE WE COMING TO? This is indeed an age of shocks and rude awaken- ings. Here we have been hugging the fond delu- sion that Penarth was healthy, and now we are in- formed that death rates count for nothing. The medical brotherhood are, however, prolific in resource, and propose initiating an elaborate, system of espion- age into our multitudious ailments, which do not come o directly under medical cognizance. The spying is to be such as not to trespass on the liberty of the sub- ject, Tabulated statements of the minor ills flesh is heir to will then be issued, so that we shall know that Mrs Gripp sneezed three times in one week a, certain sign of incipient iufluenza; that Mr Broncho one wVeezJ-anrSi°ri <&% £ '•-» to twice r j'u^umuuia j that the servant of old Miss Prim was seen to buy a porous plaster-an incontrovertible proof of her mis- tress's suffering from spinsterhood that Mrs Blank's baby had a dose of castor oil-unmistakable evi- dence of something having gone wrong with the works; that Mr Riled slammed the front door one morning when going to business-an undeniable attes- tation of that gentleman's liver being sluggish that 0 the baby in No. 0 of Dash-street, screamed for five minutes because its papa whilst shaving one morning discovered that his wife had corns, and so made the house lurid with bad French. These are only a few citations of the kind or cases which will go to prove the healthiness or unhealthiness, proper, of the town. Nor- wn be heard of this medical innovation at the nextPublic Health Committee- GAVE HIMSELF AWAY. Aprt from Mr David Morgan's pleasantry last Mandt! aight concerning the alleged starvation of a local door through lack of sickness, Penarth is be- coming:he happy hunting giound of Quackery. There ino doubt that medical laymen, if that term is per nibble, drive," a roaringj trade," to the detri- meut of aiified men. I have a profound admiration for a dtor—as a surgeon—but I hplm™ + « medicaicience is a humbug" to a great extent.' The latesvheeze of the layman in Penarth is this —" Goodorning, I've called for a medical card lately left here. "I've not seen it; what do you want ? Ob, it cfcn't matter if you've not bad it: but I know oneas left here." "How do you know?" Thereupc was shown a small chalk mark on the front of I house. Subsequently I found the medi- cal card. ereon I read that if I suffered from any of twentw. plaints, I was advised to get a bottle of a certlmixture, The card further stated it was possible fne to* have a consultation free of charge, and that consultant would undertake only what he considerecurable cases. Then followed a hit at eo-callettaedical men. The best, however, was left for the last. In recommending certain oils "whose worth cannot be túld," I read that (I the oils will keep good for a century and improve by keeping This philanthropist was evidently born a century too soon. (,frI BEWARE! A plot is afoot to slay in cold blood any Councillor who makes a more diabolical pun than that made last Monday night. In talking about converting Church- avenue into a high road, one member said to another, I'm not havin' yo.u" This, after a two-bours-and- a-half's sitting, broke up the happy home around the Press-table. It is well the public should know what kind of men they've returned! One of the unre- turned candidates of the Central Ward can use this catch vote phrase with good effect in the future.

Painfully Sudden Death at Penarth. On Saturday afternoon last Mr Thomas Cosslett coal trimmer, died suddenly at his residence, 23, Wood- street, Penarth. It appears that the deceased had, during the afternoon, watched the football match be- tween Llanelly and Penarth, after which he returned home and sat for some time by the fire. Having business in Cardiff, he left the house with the inten- tion of going to the railway station, but had only gone a short distance when he found an attack of giddiness coming on, and returned home as quickly as possible- A hurried knock at the door was an. swered by deceased's daughter, who saw that her father looked ill and staggered. She at :once took hold of him, but he fell forward. Mr Navies milk- man, passing at the time, was called in, and be suc- ceeded in carrying Mr Cossletf into the parlour, aud laying him on the couch. Dr Rees, who attended de- ceased for a couple of years before his death, was at once sent for, as was also Dr Bird, who lives near. The latter was the first to arrive, and he declared that the beating of the heart was very feeble, and orded a mustard poultice to be immediately applied but death took place in about twenty minutes after the doctor's arrival, the cnviso of dcmth b<;iug « oar- CT7lXn floe previous Sunday morning, whilst decfli was dressing for chapel, he was attacked ,,Nith a fit giddness, and bad to go to bed, but beino- better the afternoon, he got up, had his tea, and Was in h accustomed place at the Tabernacle Baptist Cinpei L the evening, of which place be was a member. There are few working men more generally respected than was deceased, for he always bad a kind word for every one. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his sad end. On Sunday last the Rev J. R. Buckler at Llandaff Cathedral, where most of the deceased's relative's attend, made reference to the painful event, as did also Mr J. W. Mayne, at Arcot-street Wesleyau Chapel, and the Rev W. G. Davies, at the Tabernacle r lassey-street. THE FUNERAL took place on Thursday afternoon, and despite tbe fact that the streets were covered with snow, and its being intensely cold, a very large number attended, including friends from the Tabernacle Baptist Chapel the Sons of Temperance, the Foresters the Coal' trimmers' Association, his late fellow-workmen, and other persons. The funeral cortege left the house a little after three o'clock, and subsequently a service was conducted at the Tabernacle Chapel bv the Rev W. G. Davies, who, after reading several suitable por- tionsof Scripture, addressed the large congregation Ile first spoke of the sad calamity which had brought them together, and referred to the deceased's connec- tion with the Church. He then sought to impress upon the assembly the necessity of beii)- pi-epared for death, whenever and however it may occur. Two of deceased's favounte hymns, We cannot ahvays trace the way? and •< Jesus, lover tf my soul, were sung and as t&e mourners and friends left the Church tfm Dead Marchwas played on the organ' by Miss Powell- Mr T.
