Notes and Comments.
Notes and Comments. Referring again to the vote of the District Council last week, presenting the Surveyor with a cheque for X25 in acknowledgement of his services last year in opposing the Cardiff Corporation Bill, we are pleased to express the opinion that the amount inade- quately pays for the work done. We were under the impression that what he did was only that which fell to him in the discharge of his regular duties, bUt such was -,io" l the case. Mr Evans had to work during the whole of the Easter holidays (not omitting Sunday) and even whole nights, and spent upwards of 80 hours on the water. When in London it was stated to some of the Board that had Mi Evans not done this particular work, it would have been necessary to have sent some engineers from London especially, which would have cost the ratepayers a sum far iu advance of that voted) so that Mr Evans ? by his extraordinary ability, bas saved our rates, and proved himself a valuable servant. Under these eir cumstances we congratulate Mr Evans upon receiving this small mark of the Council's good will.

. Opening of Penarth Pier.
Opening of Penarth Pier. The Penarth Pier, although having been liberally patronised for some months past aa a promenade, was tormallyopenedon Saturday illsomewhat unfavourable weather. Notwithstanding this fact, however, a keen interest was manifested in the event. The structure- looked gay with colour, decked as it was with a pro- fusion of flags and bunting. There were flags, too, on the sea route from Cardiff to Penarth, whilst the Bonnie Poon and Wa^erley were both rigged up for the occasion. Shortly after 2 o'clock the former steamer left Cardiff with a goodly number of passen- gers. On approaching Penarth. a salute was fired from the pier- It was replied to from the vessel amidst cheers, followed by the strains of the Co^an Brass Band, whose services had been retained for the occasion. Upon reaching the pier Mr Edwards was the first to step upon the structure. There were no speeches, and after discharging passengers for Penarih, the steamer proceeded for the first time this season to Wesson. The operations of the Waverley, which followed, were pretty much in the wake of the Bonnie Doon, and the proceedings ter- minated. We noticed three of the directorate of the Pier Company present—Messrs Edwards, E. Hancock jar. and Mr Vellacott. .l1li Dirt thinks itself the most abused When MATCHLESS CLEANSER SOAP is 1,sc).
