G hit-Chat. BY It A MULING TOMMY. Had! I must acknowledge myself fairly" had" last week by the man who described himself as Dr Hugh Findlay, and who on Thursday, preseuted me With his card. He stated that he had formerly lived |a Pcnarth, but that having' afterwards qualified for fie medical profession, lie had obtained a Government appointment at Trinidad, which he bad held for several years. On account of the death of his lather, how- ever, he had resign d the appointment, and had decided to get married and settle down in Penarth. He was not obliged to follow the profession, but would do so more as a hobby, He ordered the Chronicle 10 be sent, him weekly, and ptomised to send cash for twelve months' issups In advance the nxt morning. At- owever. the cash did not arrive, the paper was pot sent- 000 I am asktd to note thatthe total amount realised by the concert given for the benefit of the widow Of tie late Mr Thos Cotslett, lealised the band- ig n e suin of f30 after paying the expenses, which amounted to £5 18s 3d. Mrs Cosslett desires to ex. press her gratitude to the Committee, and the Com- plittee with ,o tetider tl eir thanks to all who gave their services, especially to Miss Beatrice Edwards, and to Profensor G. C. Kowell. o (J o For a parish of the size of Ccgan to be able to run successfully such a .-how as that held on Wednes- day last, sjeaks well for some of the resident?. The first show under tIe auspices of tie Horticultural Society, seven ago, was the beginning of great tliii gs. Where has lain the secret of all the success ? It bas been found in eneigetic Secretaries, tiiid V( od o kilicr comniittees-men wl0 lJave v. orked them-' | selves and have, therefore, not had much lime to look after the faults of their confreres- o Q 0 The question has been put to me by several local pigeon fanciers, why have not a few classes been made for pigeons? I cannot answer the question, except. that there does not appear to be a pigeon fancier on the Committee. Perhaps next year, now thac the question has been brought before the notice of the committee, they will give it consideration. 0 0 There were other attractions at the show besides fruit and vegetables and birds, for I heard one lady remark to another, Come and have a look at my sister's first baby." Doubtless to them this was the principal attraction. » o I noticed that at the commencement of two or three dances, couples of young ladies would start off together, as if to intimate to the young men that they were open to engagements. At all events, before the dance was completed their waists were being encircled by other arms "of a stronger ¡ manufacture." 000 It was evident that some young ladies wanted a twirl, but they did not like to. Some, perhaps, feared what their mater and paler would say, if they were discovered, (one, if she will, can tell us), whilst others appeared bashful. The temptation was strong, Dot only to the young, for one lady of about fifty summer s' remarked I envy those girls-" OOO The amount collected on the pier last Friday night, at a Concert party, in aid of the widow and family of the pooi- fellow who was drowned off the Lady Margaret, amounted to about £ 5 10s. In addition to this Mr Luwick has also collected a very substantial sum. A meeting of the Liberal u T wo Hundred will be- held on Saturday evening. OOO Blind leaders of the blind. On Thursday, morning, I saw two visitors to Penarth, both quite drunk, They were arm in arm and managed to keep their footing, although on several occasions they nearly measured the ground. OOO On Wednesday morning, about 9.30. I saw a working man, quite drunk, sitting by the way side, on the road to Cogan; asleep. I aroused him, but could not get any sense out of him, and as I had an important engagement, and he was not in dangers way I left him to sleep off the effects of his debauch- 000 The days of summer are swiftly passing, and pleasure seekers have been gaily taking advantage of the fine weather the last week or two, and have visited our town by thousands. The pier has been a great source of attraction. o 0 0 The Penarth Board Schools, were le-opened last Monday. There was a rumour to the effect that. there was an epidemic of measles in our town, and consequently the holiday would be extended. I am glad to say the rumour was unfounded. 000 It is with great regret that I notice the death of Mr Joseph Hallet, of Ivy Street, Penarth, who was one of the candidates at the late District Council. election. The deceased was one of the officials of the local branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and was greatly rejected. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon. OOO Next Sunday, the Hev T. E. Williams, of Newtown (late of Aberystwyth,) will preach at Andrews' Large Hall. Services nt 11 a-rr- and 6.30 p.m. Collections., in aid of the Tabernacle Baptist new chapel,
