A Twopenny Cabbage Costs 4/6 or 7 days. On Wednesday morning, at Penarth Police Court, Hillburn. a labourer, was charged with stealing a cabbage, with four roots, valued twopence. Ex-in- spector Rees deposed that on the 11th inst. at 11.0p.m. at Court Road be saw the defendant with the cabbage in his possession, and upon charging him with thieving a bit of a brush took place, and he ultimately gave Hilturn into custody, Hilburn stoutly denied any intention of theft and tried to make the Bench believe that he entered the gardens for another purpose. Mr Batcbelor, however, imposed a fine of 2/6, and 2/- cosls cr 7 days.

Mendicity and Mendacity. At Wednesday's Penarth Police Court, P.C. Wm. Smith tesrified, Biblically, that a peripatetic, named Edward Davies, was seen at 6.30 p.m. on the 17th inst. at High Street; Barry begging from door to door. He therefore apprehended him and upon searching him at the station, found on his parson, 3/7, 2/7 being in coppers and I silver, together with a quantity of bread, cheese, cake, and meat. When questioned, the prisoner replied that he had safed the money to send to his wife in North Wales. Superin- tendent Giddings hereupon stated that a great number of complaints had been lodged at the station against this mendicant, and the Bench sentenced the patriarchal-looking and somewhat-surprised incorrog- ible to 7 days h*rd.

A Batch of BaTry Blackguards at Penarth. Police Court. One more illustration, if there be need, that a Police Court at Ponaith is not altogether a necessity, was aga;n shown at Wednesday morning's protsacted sitting. James Thomas, seaman, for being disorderly drunk and indecently exposing- himself, was fined 10/- or 7 days. McGuiness, an unwholesome-looking charncter, for a similar offence, was fined the same amount, whilst! McGuire and Thomas Huggins sea-faiing men were each fined 5/- or 7 days for drunkenness. James Stokes, too, was in like niaauer ordered to pay 5/- or to undergo 7 days. Elizabeth Windwood, with a discoloured face and brazen boldness stamped thereon, had a had list against her, and for two specific cases of drunk and disorderly, was sent to gaol for 14 d-Ays 11 trd, without be option of a fine.

Only a Lark AN ACTRESS IN A NEW ROLE. At the Penarth Police Court on Wednesday morn- ing, before Messrs Batcbelor, Thornley, and Trayes, Lily Delaney, an actress, appeared, weeping, in the defendant's box. Opposite to her was Mrs Margaret Howe, 10, Regent Street, Barry Dock, wife of William Howe, a rigger. The prosecutor, after frequent admonishments to speak up," preferred a charge against Miss Delaney. to the effect that up till last Monday, the 16th iust., the defendant, with other artistes, was living wifrh her. On the day in question she, (witness,) before Miss Delaney left, missed a chemise and nightdress from a drawer in a bedroom occupied by Miss Delaner. Information having been given of the disappear- ance of these articles, the police came to her bonse, and P.C. Brown instituted a search- The defendant thereupon opened a basket and banded-,out one of the garments. The value of the articles would be lol-. Cross-questioned, Mrs Howe admitted that Miss Delaney said she had put them in her basket for a lark. Cross-questioned more closely by the clerk, the complainant further verified this by siivino, that the prisoner said she had done it for a lark, or "something to that effect. Furthermore, witness thought she did, and only missed them the same day as they were found. Superintendent Giddings attempted |to shake Mrs Howe$testimony, hut the Bench pulled him up sharp, and the chairman, remarking that sucb larking was to dangerous performance, dismissed the c,.

r '■ — Yoluuteer Intelligence. PRIVATE COBBLEDICK MAKES HIS MARK. SERGT. INSTRUCTOR LOBBAN INTRODUCES A REVOLVER COMPETITION- ANNUAL PRIZE MEETING. The Penarth Detachment 3rd V.B. Welsh Regiment held on Wednesday last, at Grangetown, theiraunun-l prize meeting-, whith was ithe best attended since the formation of the corps, more than half the company being present. The commanding- officer, Captain. p Coleman, and Lieut. Simpsoa, were also present. A (feature of the meeting was also the remarkably clever ^hooting of Private Cobbledick who only joined the ranks last year. A novel competition was that with twelvers. This form of shooting is not properly recognised by the service, but the Instructor-Selgt. zn Lobban-wbo was Ireland's crack shot for three years, and who also held the Army championship ia 18.92, has very wisely introduced it locally.
