DEVOTEES OF BACCHUS. Mary Sullivan, an old bacchante! was charged by P.C. Keevii with being drunk and causing an obstruction, and disturbing her neighbours. Fined 5/- inclusive. Barry Fra nrpton was fined a similar amount for "being drunk and. disorderly, Col. Guthrie remarking it was a pitiful thing to see a young man looking so impenitent. The antipodes of this bacchant was Mickael Duff, a mariner, who when charged with being drunk and disorderly, said it was his first offence, and he was very sorry, but it should not occur again. When the witness arrived the landlord's son was trying to eject him. The constable asked the man to leave the premises but he refused to go, Upon being taken into custody he became very violent and abusive, and in a scuffle bit the officer's finger and tore his tunic. Other assistance arriving the obstreperous blackguard was conveyed in a truck to the police station. Asked by the Bench what the man did for a living witness said be lived with prosti- tutes, one of whom came to the station and demanded his release, using at the same time such bad French that they bad to lock her up. The prisoner having nothing to plead in extenuation was fined 2/6 for being drunk, 5/- for the assaults, and 1/- for damage to the tunic, plus costs or undergo 4 days hard labour. P. U. 79 then went into the box and charged Alice Moss for using most filthy language in Holton Road, Cadoxton on September tb. The officer proceeded to give a specimen of the unspeakably filthy language but the magistrates' clerk said one phrase was quite enough. rhe defendant, not out of her teens, appar- ently, replied that. she didn't remember anything of what was alleged against her. Questioned by the Colonel, the policeman said she was apprehended on a warrant yesterday, .and had been locked up all night; there was a previous conviction of drunk and disorderly. Fined 5/- inclusive, or to suffer 4 days' imprisonment.

Volunteer Intelligenea. REVOLVER SHOOTING COMPETITION. A Revolver Competition will take place on Wednes- day October 9th. at 3 p.m., a team of six N. C. officers and men of the Penarth Detachment 3rd V. B. Welsh Regiment—-Captained by L C Baker will fire a team of six gentlemen captained by Mr Kane.

Peuartli and District Blue Ribbon Choir. INAUGURAL MEETING. On Wednesday evening the members of the newly formed Temperance Choir were entertained to tea in the Welsh Independent Sehoolroom, kindly lent for the occasion. The arrangements for the tea were carried out by Misses Bull, Cosslett, Parish, Hodgson, Dugmore, and Tidball, and gave the greatest satisfac- tion. The tea being over, and the room re-arraiged, a business meeting was held, presided over by Mr J. F. Pickford, conductor. A hymn having been sung, Mr W. Jones Thomas offered prayer. The election of officers was proceeded with as follows:—Secretary, Mr T. Davies; Treasurer, Mr J. B. Lord Registrar and Financial Secretary, Mr Arthur Seagrave; Accompanist, Miss Coney. Miss Bull and Mi G. Gould were elected as representatives on the Federation Commitree, and Miss Cosslett, Miss L. Davies, Mr Chapman, and Mr Watkins were selected as the Choir Committee, in addition to officers and Federation representatives- It was resolved to call the Society The Penarth and District Blue Ribbon Choir." The subscription will be at the rate of 4d per month for male members and 2d per month for female members. After next Sunday new members will have to pay an entrance fee of 6d, which will include the first month's sub- scription, and after that date candidates for member- ship will be required to submit to a voice test, and to the vote of the choir if approved by the examiners. Mr W. Jones Thomas, as secretary, and on behalf of the Federation, congratakted the Choir upon their prospects, and expoessed the hope that they would never be carried away by any successas, but that they would remember that their work was God's work. Upon the success of the Choir, he ielt to a great extent, the Federation depended. Mr Wbeatly and Mr Dykes also briefly addressed the meeting, The remainder of the evening was devoted to games. A vote of thanks to the ladies for providing1 tea closed a very pleasant meeting.
