LIVERPOOL. LIVERPOOL MERCHANTS I'N P AItLIAMENT.-TuEDERBVELEC- TION.—Although by the decision of the committee of the House of Commons Sir Joshua Walmesley, M.P. for Leicester, a late Liverpool merchant, was unseated on the ground of bribery, Liverpool has the honour of having another of her merchants elected for the borough of Derby, in the person of Mr. Law- rence Heyworth, a gentleman who is universally respected by all who are acquainted with him. Mr. Heyworth was on Sa- turday last returned for the borough of Derby by the triumph- ant majority of 914, against 775, the number polled by Mr. Freshfield, the Tory candidate next beneath him on the poll. This election is very gratifying to all true friends of progress and reform; it is not the triumph of a party, but of principles, as will be seen from the following summary of Mr. Hey worth's political cretd :He advocates Manhood Suffrage in contra- distinction to those who maintain that property ought to be made the basis of the Suffrage vote by ballot, triennial par- liaments, and the equalisation of electoral districts, are also supported by him; he is also favourable to the payment of members he is opposed to the Church and State union Mr. Heyworth was the chairman of the first public meeting of the Anti-State Church Association held in this town, on which oc- casion Edward Miall, Esq., Dr. Price, and our distinguished countryman D. Rhys Stephen, attended as the deputation from the Association on that evening the worthy chairman was hooted, hissed, and yelled at, by a numerous phalanx of the defenders of Mother Church, who were determined to pre- vent a word being heard from any of the speakers, and they were partly successful; none of the speakers had as good a hearing as Mr. Stephen, who told them to hoot, and yell, and stamp, till they were tired, and then that he would begin and speak to them, but that it was of no use attempting to prevent him from saying his say, as he was a son of the mountain," and would make them listen to him so in truth they did, with occasional howls, which re-echoed through the building. On this memorable occasion Mr. Miall challenged the defenders of State Churches to discuss the question publicly, and not to send their creatures to a public meeting for the purpose of sti- fling the expression of opinions held by the opponents of State Churches, which challenge was accepted by the Rev. J, Bay- lee of Birkenhead, and a public discussion, which excited the greatest interest in the town, took place in March, 1847, and lasted for two nights. But to return to Mr. Heyworth. He is opposed to the punishment of death in any case, and to crown all he is a professed teetotaller, and has been so for many years a few years ago he visited Rhyl, and other parts in North Wales, and lectured on temperance out of his own car- riage to assembled thousands, who were gratified to see a real gentleman eloquently advocate the principle of total absti- nence from intoxicating drinks.- Otir Correspondent. A LIVERPOOL correspondent begs to call the attention of Mr. Symons to the following case of astonishing ignorance. In a case of burglary tried before Mr. Justice Cresswell at the last Liverpool" assizes, a young girl, apparently about fourteen years of age, from the neighbourhood of Wigan, was called as witness. On being questioned by the counsel for the defence, she confessed, to the astonishment of all in court, that she did not know how many days there were in a week! Further questioned, she said Monday was the first day of the week, Tuesday the second day, and Wednesday she believed the third. She had learned the latter facts since she was before the magistrates a few weeks ago. She had never been at school, nor in any place of worship in her life. Worse than this, an elderly woman, called immediately after in the same case, said she had never heard of the word Easter, or Christ- mas, in her lifetime before, and did not know when either of the terms happened. Newton races was the chief event from which she was able to affix a date to the particular transaction inquired of her.
