FOLLOW A GOOD EXAMPLE!
FOLLOW A GOOD EXAMPLE! THE COLWYN BAY TOWN BAND QUESTION. Just now the lodging-house-keepers of Colwyn Bay have again the opportunity of doing lasting good or lasting harm to Colwyn Bay's popularity as a summer watering-place, and that right quickly, so that those remaining but this one sea- son more in the above- capacity, will I ealise a handsome profit on their investment. We refer to the Town Band subscriptions, which we learn are coming in fairly, although there is plenty of room for improvement. At the Winter Concerts Com- mittee's meeting last Tuesday night, May 17th, the surplus arising from the 1890—91 and 1891-2 concerts was unanimously voted towards the pur- chase of a covered Band-stand, to be presented to the Local Board, as trustees for the people of Colwyn Bay. This devotion to the town's welfare is a good example, which ought to be followed, largely, extensively and at once Bis dat qui cito dat! The success of the Town Band move- ment means a successful season this year, whereas a failure to have a Town Band will not only drive intending visitors elsewhere, but will also cause many visitors intending a month's outing at the seaside to complete their outing at some place better provided musically than the pleasant town backed by those picturesque PwllycrochanWoods, erelong, it is hoped, to become the inalienable possession of the community. Thus the serious- ness of the matter becomes at once apparent when we state that unless the lodging-house-keepers come forward more heartily with their promises of Band subscriptions, there is serious danger that the idea of a Colwyn Bay Town Band must be seriously crippled-or possibly even lapse al- together-for the season of 1892. On the other hand it should be well understood that a circular has been well-circulated in Colwyn Bav giving all necessary information, and explaining that Mr Alfred Waters has again been appointed Collector of subscriptions this time on behalf of the Town Band contractor, Mr F. N. Scho- field, who contemplates--should the subscriptions warrant it,—coming on June 4th, with eight instrumentalists (one more than at the beginning of the 1891 season) and one vocalist, a second vocalist and additional instrumentalists to be added for August and September, to the extent that public support warrants the strengthening of the Band. The eastern portion of Colwyn Bay will not be deserted by the Band, at any rate at first, but what will happen later will largely de- pend upon the support accorded in that section showing a substantial increase upon 1891, when it was disproportionately low. Rhos, also, will not be neglected. Those who—in answer to the cir- cular—respond with subscriptions, the Band will be enjoined from troubling for subscriptions during the season. Though much more might be said, we should have, in any event, to conclude by ad- vising the Colwyn Bay lodging-house-keepers, those who desire the prosperity of Colwyn Bay's summer season of 1892, to take their pens in their hands and-this year even more than in 1891,— gladden the eyes ofJVIr Alfred Waters by subscri- bing handsomely, according to their respective means, to the Colwyn Bay Town Band Fund, 1892. Those who.don't see Mr Waters early, should not delay their subscriptions, but should pay them into the National Bank of Wales, to the account of the above Fund.

THE PRESENTATION OF. A TESTIMONIAL. -At the close of the Service at Engedi, Colwyn Bay, on Sunday evening, Mr Lewis, Eithinog, on the Church's behalf, presented Mr Thomas Williams, of Audley House, Llewelyn Road, with ten volumes of a commentary value £ g 10s, in recog- nition of his past services connected with the Chapel. THE COLWYN BAY SUBWAY.—On Sunday night, there was a fall of part of the masonry holding up the embankment at the Subway approach. The wall fell a distance of twenty feet. The accident, which happened through the foundation giving way, will not—it is stated,—cause any inference whatever with the Subway proper. It is also stated that the works will be completed about the middle of June. FORTHCOMING CONGO TRAINING INSTITUTE MEETINGS.—On Tuesday evening, May 24th, at the Colwyn Bay Baptist Chapel, the annual meet- ing connected with the Congo Training Institute, will be held under the presidency of Alderman R. Cory, J.P., Cardift, and English and Welsh ad- dresses will be delivered by Mr John Smout, of Llanidloes, and by several ministers. This meet- ing will be preceded by an afternoon Conference, to be held at the Institute at half-past two. No MORE COLWYN BAY "WINTER CONCERTS." —The Committee of the Colwyn Bay Winter Concerts having found that latterly the attendance at these enjoyable musical gatherings has greatly decreased, came to the conclusion, at their meet- ing on Tuesday night, May 17th, that their efforts were not appreciated, and decided to discontinue these concerts. A POPULAR CONCERT.—The last of a series of concerts held at Old Colwyn English Baptist Chapel, took place on Monday evening, May 16th. In Mr Lewis's'una\'oidable absence,Mr Brackstone took the chair. Miss Brackstone, Plas y Coed, and Miss Jones, Bryntirion, Colwyn Bay, played the pianoforte duett Bas Blue," in excellent time, reflecting great credit upon their musical instructor, Miss Grafton. Mr Davies followed with a good definition of A Life at Sea." The chorus, "The Flowers," by the Young Ladies' Choir was well given. In the absence of Mr T. Evans Hughes, his son Master Albert Evans Hughes, admirably filled the vacancy with the recitations, The Young Reciter," and I am a little soldier." Song, "Little Frisky," was admir- ably given by Miss E. Frances. A good recitation A Sailor's Yarn (or Told on the Jetty,") was excellently rendered by Mr T. Ormond, who responding to an encore, gave "After Balaclava," which was also enthusiastically received. Miss Grafton, on being asked to favor the audience with a song, answered with "No Sir," and, responding to an encore, gave very effectively "A Summer Shower." The first part of the pro- gramme wound up with a chorus, in the Congoese language, by the Congo boys, who had to re- appear and give another. The second part opened with a pianoforte solo, Dorothy," rendered with much dash by Miss L. Brackstone, followed by a song, Violets," prettily sung by Miss E. Jones and the Choir. Eos Llettv'r Dryw then gave the song "La Marseilaislie," and as the response to the enthusiastic encore, Aldiberon- tiphorscophorniochronohontothologus," and dur- ing these songs every one was as quiet as quiet could be. The acting-song, "The Japanese Fan" was coquetishly given by the young ladies, whose tasteful and graceful attitudinising elicited a hearty encore. The next ptepe, a recitation, The Fireman's Wedding," by Mr T. Ormond was well received. Miss L. Brackstone gave a good rendering of "Children's Voices," the chorus being quietly hummed as a refrain by the Choir. The song, Rigmumbullidemecoime," and its encore, Hen Glogs fy nain," were given by Eos Lletty'r Dryw. The Misses Jones, Brackstone, and Jones,' having played—with excellent preci- sion,—" Bonnie Dundee," on one piano, as a trio, the usual thanks were passed, and the concert wound up with the English National Anthem. Miss Brackstone (who, with her pupils, sustained the greater part of the programme, and who played the accompaniments), taking the lead. The audience was very large and most apprecia- tive.
