ENGLISH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH YOUNG PEO- PLE'S SOCIETY OF CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR SOCIAL EVENING.—This social gathering was held, on Wednesday evening, at the English Presbyterian Schoolroom, when a fairly good number of friends responded to the invitations sent out. The presi- dential'chair was under the able control of Mr D. Lewis (Eithinog), who called upon Miss Ada Burwell to open with the pianoforte solo "Tam o'Shanter," and the playing of this young lady showed great skill and careful training. The Christian Endeavour Choir, following, sang the tune "Tan y Castell," with marked effect. Miss Linsay followed with a fine rendering of "Masks and faces." Miss Ada Burwell and Mr Burwell (Lawson Road) gave a capital duett with plenty of dash and fire, and entitled Rossini's "Litaliania in alegori." Miss Nicholson (Lawson Road) was most pleasing in her "Old fashions are better than new," and, by way of a change, Miss Richardson (Lawson Road) with true elocution recited effect- ively, Santa Claus." Miss Linsay (Lawson Road), again favoured the audience with a capital rendering of the Scottish air" Rothsav Bay," accompanied upon the pianoforte by Miss Rowland (Lawson Road). The Christian Endeavour Choir sang, "Our land for Christ," and afterwards tea and cake, which was much enjoyed by those present, was served out by the members of the Society.—A conversazione was afterwards held, and great was the delight of all who had an opportunity of viewing the various curiosities, etc. Mr J. Lewis (Eithinog) then gave a grand exhib- ition of photos, by the aid of a magnificent lantern, the places visited commencing with a start from the Flagstaff, and then a ramble here and there and everywhere, and all over the Continent. Included were Warwick Castle Mill Lane and cottages, Warwick The Hospital erected in the year 1571 Shakespeare's Home Museum Strat- ford-on-Avon Ann Hathaway's cottage Cotting- don, South Devon The Old Post-office, Cotting- don, which is a few miles distant from Torquay Exeter Cathedral; The "Swan" at Streakley; Goring Church Windsor Castle another view from the river The Village of Bray ;Wittenburg, —it was here that Luthur lived, and was martyred "Stockholme" at Copenhagen,-there are what are usually termed the Serpent Spires, at the base of which are the Serpents' heads; Cathedral of Florence; The Vatican, including works of Raph- ael etc; and the sacred stairs at Rome. The Rev J. Edwards proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all who had taken part in the assemblage, alluding in terms of special praise to Miss Linsay for her able singing, this being her first appearance at Colwyn Bay as a vocalist. A strange coincidence is the fact that all the musical portion of the entertainment, except the choral singing, was taken part in by artistes all of whom live in Lawson Road. Miss Lily Evans (Bay View Villa) played the accompaniment for the Christian Endeavour Choir. The tea arrangements were presided over by the Misses Davies, Glyndwr Miss Burwell, Lawson Road Miss Evans, Bay View Villa and Miss Lloyd, Morvan and were excellently carried-out to the satisfaction of all. HOW TO ENCOURAGE, OUR CITIZEN-SOLDIERS. —Now that all the most thoughtful-minded are considering the question of maintaining adequate national defences, the Volunteers at length are securing a larger measure than heretofore of the appreciation to which their patriotic services and sacrifices justly entitle them. And as, although all cannot be Volunteers, all gain financially by the existence and efficiency of the Volunteers, all should delight in taking advantage of any opportunity of encouraging the Volunteers, especially when they are endeavouring to attain an even prouder position in the future than they have maintained in the past. Such an opportunity now offers, in the shape of a Bazaar to be holden, in the Public Hall, Colwyn Bay, on Wednesday and Thursday, November 21st and 22nd, the proceeds going in aid of the funds of the N (Colwyn Bay) Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and more especially to- wards defraying the expenses of a Rifle-Range, Drill-Hall, and additional instruments for the Band. All should contribute to the Bazaar according as circumstances permit, and should go early, stay late, and buy often, by doing which they will greatly gratify the deserving Volunteers of Colwyn Bay and neighbourhood, and will, besides, be considered to be paying a justly-earned" tribute to the merits of the Volunteer Forces in general. THE RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEET- ING.—At the Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Rate- payers' Association's annual meeting this (Friday) evening, in the Public Hall, Colwyn Bay, can- didates will be nominated for the forthcoming election of Urban District Councillors. A LOCAL CASE AT THE BANGOR COUNTY COURT.—At the Bangor County Court holden, on Monday, October 29th, before His Honor Judge Sir Horatio Lloyd, Edwin Jones, coach-proprietor, Colwyn Bay, was sued by.R. W. Jones, grocer, Llanfairfechan, for the value of provendor sup- plied.—Mr W. Ellis was for the plaintiff, and Mr Amphlett (Messrs Wm. Jones, Porter, & Amphlett) for the defendant.— The point at issue was the authority of a servant temporarily in the defend- onts employment, to pledge his credit.—Judgment was entered for the defendant, who did not ask for costs. A PHARMACEUTICAL SUCCESS.—It is gratifying to be in a position to chronicle that Mr Robert L. Burchinshaw (pupil of Mr Fredk. J. Sykes, chemist, Abergele Road) has passed the Prelimin- ary Examination, held in October, in connexion with the Pharmaceitical Society of Great Britain. THE COLWYN BAY ART CLASSES.—It is with pleasure that we announce the commencement of the Art Classes, at the Board School, Conway Road, where Freehand and Model Drawing, Plane and Solid Geometry, and Building Con- struction, will be taught every Friday evening. Despite unpropitious weather twelve students attended the first meeting of these Classes, on Friday evening, October 26th, and there were also present several of the Committee (which, as will be seen from our advertisement columns, is a thoroughly representative one). These Classes are so much needed in the town and neighbour- hood, that it is to be hoped that the young people generally, will avail themselves of these oppor- tunities, We would mention that there seems to be some slight misapprehension that these Classes are worked for the sole benefit of the Hon. Sec. The reverse is the case, as Mr Bremner's services are given gratuitously, and it is a fact that Mr Bremner, although has no monetary interest in connexion with the Classes, takes a great interest in the work done and in the progress made in affording increased opportunities to students. A PROJECTED EXTENSION OF THE RHOS-ON-SEA PI.ER.-It has been decided to extend the Rhos- on-Sea Pier, and the piles intended for the Pierhead, although they had been put down, have been got up again. As it now is, passen- gers cannot land at low-tide. CHANCES TO HEAR DR. GOMER LEWIS—At seven o'clock next Tuesday evening, November 6th, the Rev Owen Evans, Pastor of Engedi Welsh C.M. Chapel, Colwyn Bay, will take the chair, at the Public Hall, the occasion being a lecture, in aid of the Congo Institute, by the Rev J. Gomer Lewis, D. D., whose subject is "The World's Fair."—On Wednesday afternoon and evening, November 7th, the Revs Dr Gomer Lewis and J Morgan Davies (the new tutor at the Congo Institute, will preach at the Public Hall, the services commencing at 2.30 and 6.30. SOME VERY EXTRAORDINARY WEATHER !—Ex- traordinary weather prevailed, along the North Wales Coast, on Monday, October 29th. At one time the sun shone brilliantly, the air being as balmy as that in April or May. Suddenly dense masses of clouds came from seaward, and a sudden transformation took place. Hail decend- ed violently, accompanied by loud peals of thunder and vivid flashes of lightning, the air being bitterly cold. Directly afterwards the clouds passed away, the downpour ceased, and Old King Sol again shone forth in all his glory. WELSH CONGRGEGATIONALIST INDUCTION SER- VICE.—The induction of the Rev John Evans, of Bangor College, to the pastoral charge of the Welsh Congregationalist Church, Colwyn Bay, took place on Tuesday evening, October 23rd, and was conducted by Dr E. Herber Evans, Pro- fessors T. Rhys and J. M. Davies, the Revs H. Hermony, D. D. Williams, W. Keinion Thomas, and E. J. Lloyd. DENBIGHSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL.—At the Denbighshire County Council's October Quarterly meeting, the following were elected to represent the Council on the Committee of the North Wales Counties Lunatic Asylum Mr Thomas Gee, Col- onel J. R. Barnes, Mr Thomas Parry (Colwyn Bay), Mr Owen Williams, Colonel Mainwaring, and Mr J. Watkin Lumley. The following were appointed Representatives on the Conway Fish- ery Board Messrs David Jones, Roger Hughes, John Davies, O. Isgoed Jones, and John Black- wall.-Mr R. H. V. Kyrke was elected to represent the Council on the Board of the Lan- cashire and Cheshire Sea Fisheries District in respect of the Flintshire and Denbighshire coast just added to that district.—The attention of farmers was called to the fact that an analyst (Mr Lowe, of Chester) had been appointed under the new Act for the analysing of fertilisers and feed- ing stuffs, and that of each half-guinea fee the county would pay 7s.- The standing orders were suspended in order that the Council might pro- ceed with the appointment, under clause 8, schedule III., of the Denbighshire Intermediate Education Scheme, of the County School Gov- ernors and 13 Representative Governors on the County Governing Body as follows;—Mr T. Gee, Capt Griffiths Boscawen, Messrs 1. Jones, S. Moss, T. Parry (Colwyn Bay), W. G. Dodds (Llangollen), E. Hooson, S. Jones, Colonel Main- waring, Mr J. W. Lumley, Miss Gee, and Mrs R. J. Powell (Wrexham).—On the motion of Mr Jones, the estimate for the ensuing year was accepted, at a rate of 5 six-eighth in the pound was passed. HOLYWELL COUNTY COURT.-An action was brought by Bent's Brewery Company for C,5, the amount claimed for ale, etc., supplied to Mrs Roberts, Colwyn.—Mr Bromley appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr Amphlett (Messrs Wm. Jones, Porter, & Amphlett) appeared for the defendant, who admitted liability to the amount of £2 10s.— Judgment was given for £ 2 10s, with costs on that amount. BASS'S BEER OR NOT! A COLWYN BAY DISPUTE. On October 24th, before Mr Justice Stirling, in the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice, the case of Bass, Ratcliff, and Gretton v. Lowe came on for hearing, Mr Buckley, Q.C., was for the plaintiffs, and Mr Graham Hastings, Q.C., for the defendant. Mr Buckley said that the defendant, Mrs Lowe, was the lessee and licensee of the Imperial Hotel, Colwyn Bay, and he (the counsel) had to move for an injunction to restrain the defendant from pass- ing off or attempting to pass off ale or beer not made by the plaintiffs as or for the goods of the plaintiffs, until the trial of the action or further order. Mr Graham Hastings said that there was a question to be tried, and it was desirable that they should have more information' about it. It would injure his client as much as anybody to sell Bass's beer which after all, was not Bass's. However, he was perfectly willing to give an undertaking, without prejudice, to suspend selling as alleged, till the trial of the action. His Lordship made the order granting the undertaking by consent accordingly, and intimated that if the parties would try it without pleadings he would set down the action for trial at once.
