A YOUNG WOMAN DROWNED NEAR…
A YOUNG WOMAN DROWNED NEAR RHYL. A sad ease of drowning took place near this town on Friday last. How it occurred remains a mystery. The jury at the inquest have come to a conelusion in the matter, but another theory appears to prevail in the minds of some people, who believe that the occurrence was an accidental one. The unfortunate person was a young; lady named Mary MoLenan, residing with her two brothers and sister at No, 10 Windsor Street, where she appears to have been acting as the house-keuper. Her brothers aro clothiers, travelling this and the neighbouring counties, and the sisters came to reeide in Rhyl some two years ago, from the north of Scotland. The family is a highly respectable one, and much sympathy is expressed with the aged parents and relatives in tbeir present bereave- ment. The deceased was missed on Friday evening, and steps were at once taken to discover her. These, however, were of no avail, and Saturday afternoon news reached Rhyl to the effect that Miss McLenan's dead body had been fiaad on the beach near to Prestatyo. THE INQUEST Was held at the Railway Hotel, Prestatyn, on < Monday morning, before William Davies, Esq., 0.0., the following being the j*urymen -Messrs Edmond Hunt (foreman), J as. Oldbam, Thos. Davies, Peter Davies, Robert Jones, Jas. Acton. W. H. Hughes, Griffith Eames, D. Davies, Peter Jones, R. Roberts, Thos. Jones, Jno. Jones, John Evans and William Bencett. The body having been viewed, evidence as follows was given:— Kenneth McEwen, Sussex Street, Rbyl, said that the budy was that of Mary McLenan, who was, be believed, in her 29th year. Peter Lloyd, fisherman, Penyffritb, Towyn, Prestatyn, said that at about 12 30 on Saturday afterooon he went to the sea side. He there saw an object at some distance away, and in going towards it discovered that it was a woman. Having gone up to the body, and looked at it, he went to L e village for a policeman. The officer, however, was not at home, and witness got Mr Lunt to bring down his conveyance to take up the body. That was done in the presence of many persons, and the body was placed in the hotel. Boger Prichard, labourer, Towyn, Prestatyn, said that on Friday, when going to Rhyl, he met two men, and whilst speaking to them his atten- tion was attracted to a woman of respectable appearance wandering about the sandbanks. She disappeared from his sight by goicg down into a hollow. Having parted with the men, and when opposite Ty Cocti, he again saw the woman, who was sitting ou a slope, having her hand under her head. Witness stood looking at her. She maw him, and puttiog on her gloves got up, aod walked in the direction of Prestatyn. This was between 4 and 5 o'clock. About 7 o'cloek, when returning from Rbyl, witness went from the path to where the woman had been sitting, and followed her footmarks for 100 or 200 yards. Oo Saturday he identified the body as that of the woman he had seen the previous day, and which was found at a distance of about two miles from Ty Coch. By the Foreman Witness had particularly noticed the dress and ident fled it. Flora McLenan, sister of the deceased, said that the latter was last teea by her about 1 30 p.m. on Friday, after dining together. Witness afterwards left the house to go to her business at Miss Furber's, leaving deceased in the house. When witness returned about 7.30 she found that her eister was not in the house. Their brother, John McLenan, lived with them, but he was away all day until 8 in the evening. When witness last saw deceased she was in her usual health, aud there was nothing in either her ap- pearanca or talk to attract attention. They had lived in Rhyl nearly two years, and during that time the deceased had not been confined to bed by any illness, nor was witness aware that she was troubled in her mind. They all lived ami- eably together. The deceased was subject to asthma, and that was the only ailment which troubled her.—That being all the evidence, The Coroner desired that Mr J. McLenan and and Mr McEwen should be called into the room, to listen to what had been said. He then J e- marked that the case was a somewhat peculiar one and indeed, from the evidence now before them he failed to see how the jury could arrive at any conclusion other than a very unfortunate one. He and the jury were placed in a very awkward position. As they were well aware, the object of an inquest was to ascertain whe- ther a deceased bad come to an end by fair or by foul means. If by fair means, such as death from natural oauses or by accident of any kind, the mstter ended there. But if by foul,—those means would have to be ascertained, so that they might discover at whose hands, whether by those of deceased herself or those of some other party. If by her own hand?, whether the deed was premeditated or whether it was done whilst she was suffering from insanity of any sort From the evidence there was nothing to c&ut'e suspicion that the deceased had come to bet dnnth by the hands of a third party. Having reviewed the evidence, the Coronersaid that it Was such as to leave them in an unfortunate predicament. He was always most anxious, If need be, to get hold of something that would enable the jury to bring n a verdiot other tb"n that of felo de se. Consequently he would have liked to have had some evidence to shew that deceased was depressed in spirits for some reason or the other; but so far th.,y h d bad nothing to shew that, tier lister hao eaid that when she last saw deceased there was t.othu g particular in either her manner or talk. hb r/minded the jury that their oath demandtd that they should give a verdict according to t!Jij evidence. He would have been glad it they hao so-Y e evidence before the itquiry was closed to enable the jury to bring in a verdict that the deceased committed saicide whilst labouring under temporary insanity. Mr McEwen said that he knew for a fact that when deceased on one occasion went along the cop towards Bhuddlau she suffered from one of the asthmatic attacks to which she was subject, and on her return stated that she could hardly get back, owing to being fatigued and done up in conseauence. Roger Prichard was recalled, and said that when the tide was at its full it came in as far as the border ef the sand hills. When he was going to and coming from Rbyl the tide was out. The Coroner having again addressed the jury, in the oourse of his remarks said that some men held that no one would commit suicide unless at the time suffering more or less from insanity oi oae kind or the other; and in a great measure he agreed with that theory. Mr McEwen suggested that deceased whilst walking home was overtaken by the tide, of the nature of which she was ignorant. The room was then cleared, and upon the ro- admifsion of the public a verdict of suioide whilst labouring from temporary insanity" was murDed.. In the afternoon of the same day the body was brought from Prestatyn and buried in the Bhyl cemetery, the Rev J. Verrier Jones offioi. ating, deceased having been a member at the English Presbyterian chapel.
- AUSTRALIAN COMMENT.
AUSTRALIAN COMMENT. The Sydney, N.S.W., Australia, Herald, publishes the following editorial comment:- Not only have England, India, Canada, Spain France, New Zealand, Australia and nearly every other civilised power under the sun, reeorded their grateful appreciation of the merits of St. Jacobs Oil, but we have besides received within the last few months spontaneous words of praise from the champion youth walker of Australia, a sculler who has held the championship of the world, the champion sprinter, a cricketer of universal reputation, and a host of other less distinguiihed athletes, all of whom attribute their success in a great measure to St. Jacobs Oil. Unanimity of praise is as decided among athletes as among nations." Mr. W Midwinter, of the Cly(Je Hotel, Carlton, Australia, is known as a great cricketer, both io England and the Australasian colonies, lie writes that from personal experience he has no hesitation in bearing testimony to the beneficial effects of St. Jacobs Oil, and that it is a reliable and effectual remedy for the numerous bruises and sprains appertaining to the cricket field, and capital-antidote for the many hard knocks always incidental to manly sports and gamss. Mr.E.F.Paioter, of the London Athletic Club and Ranelagb Harriers, suffered from a sprained tendon for three months, no remedies which he tried doing him any good. A quick cure was however, effected by St. Jacobs Oil, and he was able to resume his running and atheletie sports. The London Sporting Life says:—"An excellent remedy for spiains, brusisee, rheu- matism, &o., which has been for some times in use by athletes of all classes, will be found in St. Jacobs Oil. Amongst oarsmen and cricketers, it has long been acknowledged as one of th, best medicaments of its kind." Boating men and cyoliats, as well as athletes, everywhere use and reoommend St. Jacobs Oil for rubbing into the muscles after head training. It removes all istiffnessacd soreness directly. No cyclist should be without a bottle of Ct. Jacobs Oil on his machine m a put of his equipment
RHYL COUNTY COURT.
RHYL COUNTY COURT. An Infant and His Liabilities. This was an action heard at the Rhyl County Court on Friday, when Edward Hughes, Iron- monger, High Street, claimed L8 16s. 8d. from Alfred W. Torkington, builder and broker, Orescent Road. Mr Goronwy M. Evans. Rhyl and Holywell, appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Ed. Roberts for defendant. Mr Evans said that the debt was admitted, and it was simply a question for argument as to liability. Mr Boberts asked the judge to suspend judgment in this case, as there were other actions pending in the High Court bearing on the same question. One action would shortly be heard at the Assizes, to to the present claim, it was made with respect to goods supplied to enable defendant to carry out a certain contract which he, an inexperienced youth, had foolishly entered into; and which he could not have finished unless the goods ia question were supplied to him. The question was whether defendant was Hablo under those circumstances I taking into view that the contract was not a beneficial one. He maintained that a debt could not ba r6covered from an infant unless it had been entered into to provide him with necessaries. He also read several cases in support His Honour said that the cardinal rule con. sidered in these cases was whether contractb entered into were for the benefit of an infant. That infants were liable under certain circum- stances there could be no question. Mr Roberts said that his client, finding himself in difficulties, had placed his effects in the hands of auctioneers. But when the sale I was held, his client was boycotted, and the twentieth value of the goods was not realized. Mr Evans called for a proof of the infancy, and Mrs Torkington deposed that defendant was born July 23rd., 1868. Mr Evans said, in regard to oases quoted, that the tendency of the law was to relax 00 this question. If be could prove that the things purchased were necessary and beneficial to defendant, the debt was recoverable. They had i)othing.to do with the hazard attached to the contract. He knew nothing of any assize oases, and would ask His Honour for judgment that day. Defendant had started in bus noes some 18 months ago, and he did all that was necessary to bold himself out to the world as a man who was in the position to contract. He advertised, put up sign-boards, and issued note- headings in his own name. Since then he had admitted liability lin this case, and promised payment. But when a demand was made he set up a plea of infancy. Frederick Hoghes deposed to the sale of the good. required to enable defendant to carry out contracts at Rhyl and Colwyn Bay. Defendant was also sworn, and said that in these contracts he lost money, in one case the loss being BoO. Ho had no capital when he I started in business, and was now woiking for a general broker. The judge said he would reserve judgment. Claim for Gas. The Rhyl Gas Company, represented by Mr Jo?. Williams, collector, Maimed 21 3, alleged to be due for gas and fittings, from Mrs Myra Williams, Sussex Street. Defendant denied having used so much gas, hot proofs were pro- duced on the other side. Judgment for plain- tiffti was entered, payments t3 be at the rate of 5s. per month. For the above court there bad been set down for hearing 55 ordinary cases, 14 judgment summonses, three adjourned actions, and one application for a new trial. In the latter the applicant wa William Jonea Hughes, but he did not appear, and the respondents the Hydro- line Company Limited.

GAMES OF CARDS.-From a very early date play- ¡- ing cards have performed an important part in the amusement of the world, and that they can and do exercise a very beneficent effect on minds that are sick or weary is almost universally admitted. As a legitimate relaxation from business cares, or for whiling away the tedious hours of convalescence, games with cards are invaluable, and we, therefore, have pleasure in drawing attention to three little books recently published by Mr. L. Upcott Gill, of 170, Strand, London, which are specially designed to assist in a better knowledge of a harmless and even useful recreation. The first is Miss Whitmore Jones' "Games of Patience," for one or more players, which describes and, where necessary, illus- trates as many as forty varieties of the game, and is sold at a shilling; the second is Mr. Guerndale's "Poker Book" (also issued at a shilling), which gives the rules and methods of play of the famous American game of Draw Poker, now becoming so popular in England; and the third is Professor Kunard's Book of Card Tricks," which describes, in the clearest manner, how a great number of the most amusing tricks with cards can be performed by amateurs. We hear that these books, are very popular in London, and they should be no less so amongst our readers. COMFORT AND PROLONG YOUR EXISTENCE BY DRiNKING MITRE TEA s. d. THE MITRE Amgoorie 2 6 lb Consists of the choicest Indian Tea. selected from the famous growths of the unrivalled Amgoorie Gardens. It produces a liquor of extraordinary strength, posses- sing that creaminess and delicn,"v of flavour which Ü the distinctive feature of the FINEST INDIAN TEA. Sold in Quarter-Pound, Half-Pound, and One-Pound Parcels by appointed Agents throughout the United I Kingdom, bearing the Registered TRADE MARK which is an absolute gaarnntue of the high slandard of these Teas being uniformly maintained. Agents for this Neighbourhood:- J. TURNER, RUSSELL ROAD, RHYL. F. LANG FIELD, 49, KINMEL ST., RHYL 7931 A WELSH TRADESMAN AND THE ANALYST. Liverpool, July 23rd, 1888. E. P. JONES, ESQ., 7, Water Street, Rhyl. DEAR SIK, 1 now have pleasure in submitting my analyses of the two samples of Tea received from you, to test, marked respectively 2 and 2s. Gd. Both Parcels prove to be absolutely pure, ifenuine nno sound also or rich composition in the various active principles and nutrients belonging to this beverage. Judging chemically, there does not seem to be any marked difference of composition in the two samples, and in this respect they com- pare particularly well with the choicest qualities of Tea that are otiered. The flavour and aroma in each case are exceedingly pleasant and agreeable. And taking the figures upon them as indicating C, el their retail prices, I should consider them as offer- ing special value. T.
