A DEAD OFFICER'S PATHETIC STORY. f There is a more than usually melancholy interest attaching to one name in the list of killed officers in the battle at the Modder River. Lieutenant Lionel Long, of the Yorkshire Light Infantry. is a son of Mr. C. E. B. Long, brewer, of Portsmouth and Fareham. Last September, Lieutenant Lone, who had just-got hi-s commission, was explaining the technicalities of a. new rifle on the lawn of his father's place at Fareham to a favourite sister, when 4he gun slipped' and went off, and'Miss Long. a girl of only 15 or 16, was'killed on the spot.
