WHAT THE DOCTORS SAY; .
WHAT THE DOCTORS SAY; RIKGWORM.—Ringworm is a most contagious complaint, and most difficult to get rid of when once the unfortunate child is afflicted with it. I wish I could impress upon mothers the absolute criminality of allowing children suffering from y 11 any trouble of this description to mix with others, unless due warning is given to the mothers. Little heads will rub together, and the mischief is done and perhaps a whole family infected before the fact is discovered; and it is most annoying to be obliged to isolate one's children, and, perhaps, in case of a little girl, to sacrifice a beautiful head of hair. The great thing is to grapple with the disease directly it appears. Take the child to a doctor at once, carry out his directions to the letter, keep the head covered with a cap to pre- vent the mischief spreading. Be most careful to keep all washing apparatus, towels, pillow- cases, used by the child quite apart, and keep its hats in a separate place, and destroy when the child is really cured. I have heard of a case where headgear used by children suffering from ringworm was put by in a cupboard for a year or two, and then used for theatricals, with most disastrous results to the wearer. Remem- ber that so long as there is one affected hair in the head the child cannot be certified free from infection. ANOTHER HEAD TROUBLE.—While I am on the subject of hair it may not be amiss to say one word as to the treatment of para- sites or pediculi in the hair. It some- times, unfortunately, happens that if a child goes to a school-treat, or temporarily mixes with dirty children, that its hair be- comes infested. The worst of the trouble is that it is often unsuspected, and ordin- ary careful brushing or washing does not free the hair, and so the mischief goes on till the head is discovered to be full of nits. Get a bottle of carbolic-lotion, from a chemist, the strength known as one in twenty. Pour a little into a soap-dish, and add an equal quantity of methylated spirit; thoroughly saturate a small tooth-comb with this mixture, and carefully comb the child's hair from roots to tips, this will not only free the hair itself from pediculi, but destroy the nits. After- wards thoroughly wash the hair with carbolic- soap, repeating the combing process twice a day till you are perfectly certain all danger is past. THE GRAPE CURE.—The grape cure is re- commended by many eminent French and Italian doctors for cases of dyspepsia, especi- ally when accompanied by constipation, and in the gouty. It is also valuable in chronic diarrhoea of dysenteric origin, and Tissot tells a story of a regiment of soldiers decimated by dysentery, which vanished in a marvellous manner on encamping among the vineyards full of ripe grapes. Chronic cystitis is benefited by the alkaline carbonates developed by the vegetable acids of the fruit, but in such cases care must be taken that the grapes are not sour. Cardiac affections are relieved by the laxative and diuretic action, while almost all patients are benefited by the fresh-air exercise and early rising which the rules of the cure involve. Grapes grown on volcanic soil are said to have a more markedly stimu- lant and diuretic action than others. As to the amount, one French physician recom- mends patients to take as much as they possibly can without exciting disgust, while others ad- vise a gradual increase to a daily maximum of eight pounds. The duration of the cure is from one to three months. EAT BEFORE GOING TO BED.-Those who suffer from insomnia should eat something be- fore going to bed, having put aside work en- tirely at least an hour before. Verbum sap. If they are not hungry they should be instructed to eat, and if they are hungry they should eat whatever they want. Not an unpleasant pre- caution, surely. A glass of milk and a biscuit are sometimes all that can be taken at first, or mashed potato buttered. Before eating, how, ever, a bath should be taken, preferably cool or cohLwhichshould be given with a sponge or stiff brush, and the body thoroughly rubbed with ø. coarse towel afterwards. The bath need not be more than five minutes in duration. Further than this the patient should go to bed at the same hour every night and get up at the same time every morning. There is a popular super- stition that grown people should not cat imme- diately before going to sleep, that it will give them indigestion or nightmare, or both. The writer of these notes, however, c-annot see why adults should be so very diflerent in this re- spect from babies. The average person should be in bed seven or eight hours, which is time enough for the digestion of almost anything edible.—The Family Doctor. DIET IN CHILDREN.—Professor A. Czerny condemns the recommendation of a diet of milk, eggs, and meat to keep and make children) more than two years of age, strong, unless especially indicated by a certain disease, and then only for a time. He admits that such a diet often produces muscular children, but says they are liable to be constipated, the urine is very acid and loaded with sediment; vulvitis in young girls often thus has it origin; the children are pale in colour, apathetic, sleepy, are often afflicted with bone affections, eczema, prurigo, and have a tendency to tuber- cular diseases. He advocates, therefore, the ordinary mixed diet and would not bar out many of the vegetables which are still believed to be indigestible for children, nor a certain quantity of the sweets which are said to injure children's teeth. REST.—The necessity for an occasional rest from labour and more particularly for some outdoor recreation, is shown by some interest- ing experiments recently conducted at Munich, which demonstrate that the system losses oxygen to the amount of one ounce as the re- suit of a hard day's work. It has been found that the labourer does not recover during the night the oxygen he has thus overdrawn, but that an occasional day of rest intervening at the right time will serve completely to restore him. It is equally the case in other kinds of labour, whether mental or physical. A com- plete day's rest gives renewed vitality and re" newed energy to commence work. 11- FOR GATHERED Fi.NGEits.-Boracic fomenta- tions will soon cure these. Soak a piece of lint in boracic lotion, put a pad of it on the gathered finger, bind a piece of oil-silk over to keep the moisture in. and change often. To make the boracic lotion, get one ounce of boracic acid, pour on it one pint of boiling water, let it stand till cold, and bottle for use as required. This is also useful for bath- ing inflamed eyelids, but for this enough warm water should be added to it to make It lukewarm, and the eye must be wiped very thoroughly afterwards. ? ? THE VALUE OF APPLES.—Apples are said to be the best food for brain workers, as they contain more phosphoric acid than any othef fruit. They also promote sleep and thoroughly disinfect the mouth. A raw apple is digested in one hour and a half. If taken freely at break- fast with brown bread, and no meat they have an admirable effect on the system, and very little, if any, medicine will be required. For those who do not care for raw apples, baked ones are equally good. It Fon NERVOUS CHI. D I:N .—With children of a nervous, excitable frame of mind, who are, perhaps, naturally of a sensitive, nervous temperament, who are disturbed by the slight- est noise, and are unahle to go to sleep before ten or eleven o'elock at night, excellent effects will be produced lIy chamomilla, the tincture in minim doses, every 15 or 20 minutes. Put a teaspoonful in half a tumblerful of water, and let the child drink it freely.
A BIT OF IRISH IVili.
A BIT OF IRISH IVili. Some time ago while I was trading in » village store one of the clerks came to the junior partner, who' was waiting on me, and said: Please step to the desk. Pat Flynn wants to settle his account and wants a receipt." The merchant was evidently annoyed. Why, what does he want of a receipt ? bs said; we never give one. Simply cross his account off the book; that is receipt enough." "So I told him," answered the clerk, but he is not satisfied. You had better see him." So the proprietor stepped to the desk, and; after greeting Pat with a "Good morning)" said: "You want to settle your bill, do you?" Pat replied in the affirmative. Well," said the merchant, 11 there is no need of my giving you a receipt. See! I will cross your account off the book and suiting the action to the word he drew his pencil diagonally across the account. That is a good receipt." p "And do you mane that that settles it? exclaimed Pat. That settles it," said the merchant. And ye're sure ye'll never be askin' me for it again?" We'll never ask yon for it again," said the merchant decidedly. Faith, thin," said Pat, I'll be after kapin me money in me pocket, for I haven't paid it." Oli, well, I can rub that out!" Faitli now, and I thought the same," said Pat. It is needless to add that Pat got hi8 receipt.
