A LADY IN TROUBLE AT RHYL. A sad case was heard before the Rhyl Magis- trates on Saturday, when Edith Davies, who described herself as the wife of a doctor's assis- ^nt, and who is staying at Gronant, was charged with stealing a tablecloth valued at 5s. frorn the house of Mrs Arnold, Millbank, Rhyl, on Sept 6th. Mr Perks and Mr Elwy Williams Were the magistrates present. Defendant admitted the offence and stated had drink in Rhyl on the night in question, missed the train, and went to a public house, where she failed to get lodgings, but met Han named George Blood, who offered to *jod her shelter at his lodgings in Millbank. "he went there unknown to Mrs Arnold, and Sat up until daybreak, when she left with the Jnan, taking the tablecloth. He left her at the cross roads to gather mushrooms, and she walk- ed home, selling the tablecloth to a milk dealer named John Roberts, Hafod Elwy, Prestatyn, I paid 6d for it. Mrs Arnold said the tablecloth was left with to wash, and bore marks.—John Roberts, stated that the woman asked for a drink of Water and for money on the tablecloth. The Magistrates' Clerk commented on the fact that 6d did not represent the value of the tablecloth. P.S. McWalter said he arrested the prisoner Who at first denied the charge. Defendant afterwards showed him the house where she sold it, and said she was in drink at the time of the theft. The Chairman said the Bench had taken a ^efy lenient view of the case aa she Avas in r*nk, bnt that did not justify theft. She ^°uld be fined 10s. or 7 days.

THE YEOMANRY'S RETURN.
THE YEOMANRY'S RETURN. A memorable episode in the annals of the county was enacted at Welshpool on Friday, when the members of the 31st and 49th Companies of the Montgomeryshire Imperial Yeomanry and the Service Section of the 5th Volunteer Battalion, South Wales Borderers, were feted in celebration of their recent homecoming from the South P-1 African war. Inside the Parish Church an exceedingly large congregation had assembled and, when the mili- tary had taken possession of the seats reserved for them, all the available space was occupied 'the clergy present were Archdeacon Thomas (Llandrinio), Rev D G Davies (Vicar of Welsh- pool), Rev E W Brown (Rector of Montgomery). Rev D Stephens (Vicar of Buttington), and the Revs J Jenkins, M Davies, and D James (of Welshpool). Mr T Maldwyn Price presided at the organ, and the Rev J Jenkins intoned the service. The opening byrnp, 0 God, onr help in ages past,' was rendered with fervour and im- pressiveness. Psalms 120 and 124 weie Sllnz, and the lesson, which was read by Archdeacon Thomas, was taken from Joshua 22. The Te Deum was ch-inted and the anthem was Psalm 107, during the singing of whic'n the Vicar of Welshpool ascended the pulpit and took as his text the 12th verse of the 116th Psahn The luncheon took place in the Town Hall, which was decorated with flags, &c., and a capital repa-t was laid on the tables by Miss Frost, Royal Oak Hotel. The Mayor of the Borough, wearing his chain of office, presided, and he was supported by the Countess of Powis, Mrs Humphreys Owen, &c. The Chairman proposed the health of the King and Queen and the rest of the Royal Family,' and the toasts were loyally received. Mr Morgan Owen, H M.I.. in response to the call of the Mayor, said it afforded him great pleasure to comply with the request of the com- mittee of this celebration to propose on this in- teresting and, he might add, historic occasion, the toat of The Imperial Forces.' The term Imperial Forces' was, in his opinion, just now of a most significant character, for it reminded them of the fact that the sun never sets upon those forces. They were to be found at home, in Canada, Australia, South Africa, and, indeed, all over the world (cheers). And, at the call of duty, they responded with alacrity and with a firm determination to discharge the various offices of that duty (hear, hear). He need scarcely remind them that they had performed their duty to the admiration of their friends and the consternation of their foes (cheers). In South Africa, the Im- perial Forces had had no light tasl, to do. Th< y bad to endure hunger, thirst, and every kind of fatigue while they encountered the crafty foe (hear, hoar). It would be remembered that the ex-President of the Transvaal said that the Boars would stagger humanity.' And they did I stag- ger humanity' when they established the human shambles at Vlakfontein, where British soldiers, while engaged in the task of binding up each other's wounds, were shot dead like dogs (shame). Unfortunately for us last year those in authority in South Africa were not acquainted with the real character of the B>er—-(hear, hpar) -or they would not have taken his word of allegiance t,) our King and allowed him to depart, not to his home where he said he was going, but to prowl about the country like a wolf in the night killing unsuspecting people and destroying the food sup- plies even of his own kith and kin (shame1. These were among the hardships and perils our Imperial Forces had to endure (hear, hear). And yet there were some i-eople so utterly shameless and so thoroughly unpatriotic as to blackguard our own men and to stand up for the Boers (shame). And, because some of these people were members of Parliament or what not, the Boers magnified the importance of their words and used them to prolong this horrible war (hear, hear). We, however, knew these people, and they only reminded us of the frog in the fable (laughter). But our Imperial Foices bad taught the whole world that-whether rich or poor, born in the hall or the cottage-they bad at heart the honour, safety, and welfare of the British Empire (cheers). And should the nations at any time combine against England, then with the speed of electricity, a question would be put to our brethren all over the world, and that question would be—" Are you ready?' And, with equal speed would be flashed back the reply ready, ever ready '(loud applause). Captain Pryce, in responding, said he returned his thanks on behalf of the Army, and he sincerely wished it was his duty to give them a vote for what they owed them. It was a consolation to know how much they were in touch with them and with the Army in South Africa (applause). Lieut. Col. Pryce-Jones, M.P., also responded to the toast. The toat of the afternoon—' The Montgomery- shire Imperial Yeomanry and the Volunteer Ser- vice Company '-was proposed by Mr Harrison. He was happy to think that the toast was one that could not infringe in any way whatever upon party politics: it was one in which they could be warmly united in welcoming their warriors from the front, and wishing suceess and prosperity to those who were left behind in South Africa (ap- plause). Referring to a reniaik made by Capt Pryce concerning Sir Watkin, he said it would be im- proper, and be knew it would not be in accordance with their feelings in introducing to their notice that toast, if he were not, on behalf of the county, to tender to His Majesty's Lord Lieutenant their warmest appreciation of what he had done for the county (applause). Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, Bart., who received a warm reception, said that the Yeomanry assem- bled there some twenty months ago, and some of them would remember one of their last experien- ces was to be entertained there before they went out and receive the whole of their equipment which took them out. He thanked the county for the patriotic way in which they supported the Yeo- manry and Volunteers throughout the time of equipment, Thej had sent 550 Yeomen to the front, and a Volunteer Service Company had also been to the front, and he thanked them for the way they had fought for the country and for the county (applause). Captain Robert Wynn also responded, and said that on behalf of the 31st and 49th Companies Imperial Yeomanry and the Volunteer Service Section, he thanked them for the kind reception they had given them. They were sent out K do their duty, and he thought they bad done .eir utmost to carry out their instructions. TL-y had come back safely, and if they were wanted again they would be ready to go out (applause.)

THE RHYL BELVOIR HOTEL.
THE RHYL BELVOIR HOTEL. At Chester Police COUlt on Tuesday, Mr J E Middlehurst, arbitrator and valuer, Manchester, lire: tor and chairman of the Belvoir Pier Hotel, Rhyl, appeared to an adjourned summons at the instance of the Official Receiver (M i- Hugh Jones) lor failing to supply a statement of accounts as required under the company's winding up act 1890. The Official Receiver now stated that the state- ment of affairs bad now been filed, and therefore the object he had in view in taking proceeding had been attained. He was now quite willing to allow the proceedings to drop on payment of the cost of the summons. Mr H P Jones, solicitor, Manchester, appeared for the defendant and stated that he still adhered to the opinion he had pre- viously expressed by letter, that the Chester magistrates had no jurisdiction to hear the summons, and he was supported in that view on looking into the! authorities on that subject. He did not wish to press the point now, however. There seemed to be an impression prevailing that there was some reflection upon Mr Middleburst's charac, ter in regard to his conduct in this matter, and he wished to have it removed, Mr Middlehurst had no wish otherwise than to assist the Official Receiver in every way he possibly could and he supplied him with information from time to time althousrh nerhaps not in the technical form he ought to have done. He probably ought to have applied to the Official Receiver for further time in which to file the statement, but be did not do so, being ignorant of these requirements. He had not been wilfully negligent in carrying out the duties which devolved upon him, and he wished the Officialltceiver to confirm this statement.— The Official Receiver said the only; thing he could say was that be did not get the statement of affairs. What Mr Middlehurst's grounds of excuse for failing to supply him earlier with the statement might have been, he did not know, but lie was 'fuite content to let the matter remain as it was. The magistrates made no order, and the defendant paid the court costs, amounting to 6s 6d.
