MAKING LOVE UP A TRKE.
MAKING LOVE UP A TRKE. Billing and cooing amongst Llie l'ijiiiiq is a curious feature in their social customs. It is decidedly against the rule to do any courting within doors. The gardens or plantations are the spots held sacred to Cupid, and the gener- ally approved trysting-place of lovers is high I up amongst the branches of a bread-fruit tree. You mny often walk round a plantation on a moonlight night and see couples perched forty feet from the ground in the bread-fruit trees, one on each side of the trunk, a position which comes fairly within the limits of a Fijian maiden's ideas of modesty.
YET ANOTHER.
YET ANOTHER. An apt and witty retort was that made to the colonel of a regiment on one occasion by an old Quaker aunt, to whom lie was complain- ing. He was an unpopular officer, filled with a sense of his owi. importance, and most over- hearing in manner to his inferior officers, who disliked him heartily in return, and in conse- quence shirked their duties whenever oppor- tunity offered. "I have a most unsatisfactory set of men under me," lie complained, standing before the little old lady in a pompous attitude. I am practically forced to do all the work which should be done by them a great part of the time. I am my own major, my own lieutenant, and my own sergeant." He stopped and frowned down upon his listener. And thee is thine own trumpeter, also, William, I fear," said the old lady, with a merry twinkle.
NOT THE SORT OF BREAK ONE…
NOT THE SORT OF BREAK ONE WOULD LIKE. A good and true story is told of the mayor of a provincial city, who was a stout man with such hroad shoulders and ample girth, that an ordinary floor shook when he walked across it. One day while descending the staircase of his house, he slipped and plunged down to the landing, falling heavily. As soon as he could regain his footing, he walked back to his wife's room and lighted a candle. "I heard something break on the stairs when T fell," he exclaimed, and I want to find out how much damage was done." llnH'.nii-limir n ftp r wards he returned to his wife's room with the candle. 1 have looked up and down the stairs," he said, from top to bottom, and I do not find anything out of gear; yet I am certain that I heard something break." The next iiiot-iiiiig lie lighted the candle again and made a prolonged investigation of the stairs, and even went into the cellar to I ascertain if the iron post underneath the main floor had given way. His search was without result. "ThehouseseemhtobealJ right," he said to his wife, ";ret I a.m certain that! heard some- thing break. In the coiir,,ia week I." [a iffered from pain in his chest, and a-sked his wife to rub him with embrocation. She complied with the request, but he fairly howled with pain at the first, stroke, and begged her to stop. His wife sent a messenger at once for the family physician, who soon entered the house. He examined the patient, and exclaimed sharply: « Why, my dear man, what has happened to you ? Two 01 your ribs are broken, and a tliird is, illiiired." With a. look onntenserenel, the injured man painfully raWd himself in bed. I (old you a week ago, he said to lus wile, 11 1 litipav I something break. I was absolutely certain of it," and he sank back with a sigh, and a mind evidently relieved by the <li-c<ner\ ¡ Two or more lirok^n vih^ would nn\6 given most men something else to think about.
