Rhyl Orchestral Society. ANNUAL CONCERT. There was an audience of very encouraging dimensions at the Town Hall, Rhyl, last night on the occasion of the seventh annual concert in con- nection with that thriving institution, the Rhyl Orchestral Society, which owes the creditable position it occupies in thia part of the musical world very largely to the zeal of its capable con- ductor, Mr J D Asher, and to the loyalty of its members. The concert was under the patronage of the gentry of the town and district, who, to show their appreciation of the society's efforts to afford the public from time to time a thorough treat in the orchestral music line, also supported it by their presence in good numbers. Having secured the assistance of some of the leading vocalists of Rhyl and St Asaph, Mr Asher was able to submit a programme in every way worthy of the occasion. The first item was the rendering by the orchestra of two dances by Arthur H Wood (deputy conductor of the Llandudno Pavilion Orchestra), Treue Herzen," and Ne m'oubliez pas," which received an inter- pretation that would have delighted the composer and was highly satisfactory to the audience. Helmund's Roccoco," a serenade br strings (pizzicato) which has become a very popular item locally, was also accorded ample justice by the orchestra, who later on still were heard to ad- vantage in the rendering of two pieces by Tschai- kowsky — Chanson Triste" (Op. 40) and Humore«ke (Op. 10)—and of Mendelssohn's barcarole No. 13 (Op. 38). The playing was smooth throughout and a pleasing crispness marked the spirited passages, this being par- ticularly noticeable in the concluding item of the programme, "Gaiety" (A H Weod). Mrs Tayleur, whose capabilities are too well known to need emphasising here, gang in a very acceptable manner Love's Coronation" (with violin obligato by Mr E J Robert*, of the Queen's Palace Orchestra), and later on Daffodils- a-blowing," the pleasing interpretation of the latter securing for her a well deserved encore. A mos*. cordial reception awaited Mr William Brown (tenor) and Mr H Finch (bass), the two new choristers of the St Asaph Cathedral. We believe both appeared last night for the first time before a Rhyl audience, and the very favourable impres- sion they created we venture to take for a sign that their services will be much sought after in connection with future local concerts. The recitative and air, Lend me your aid," from C Gounod's opera Irene," was sung with excellent tone and expression by Mr Brown but it was in Wilhelm Ganz's song, I seek for thee in every flower," that he was heard best—for the rendering of this he WAS applauded with such enthusiasm that he was obliged to give the audienae another song, The Kingdom," which also was finely rendered. Mr Finch sang on his first appearance "Jilted" (J Stainer), which proved him to be the possessor of a voice of great purity and compass. He also sang The Curfew" (Monk Gould), for which he was encored in a most hearty manner, giving in response a spirited ren- dering of The Skipper" (Jude). Mr Frank Lloyd, by no means a stranger, was in great form with his sketches, the two he was announced to give—" Portraits of Everyday Life and The Village Concert "—being (given in such an enter- taining manner that he had to supplement each with another. So much then for the programme. The orchestra, which was directed in an able man- ner by Mr J D Asher, included the following Mr E J Roberts, leader the Misses Bibby, Drummond, Evans, Gardner, Hamlett, May Hughes, Sheffield and M Williams, and Messrs Norman Bibby, Bosanquet, Cookson, John Evans, Richard Evans, and De Quincy, violins; Mr D Trehearn, viola; Messrs 0 T Jones and Winter, basses; Mr Mohr, Flute; Mr F S Jenks, oboe; Mr Dejan, clarinettel; Messrs Vaughan and Ellis, cornets; Messrs Mohr and J Jones, horns Mr Davies, trombone Mr Mohr, tuba and Mr L J Foster, piano. The duties of acoompanist were very satisfactorily discharged by Miss Mabel Hughes. The decoratione with which the platform was adorned were kindly lent by Mr Greenslade and Mr Williams, of the Queen's Palace.
