Football. -I The roaring grne of football is unce again claiming tbe attention of the public. The principal opening matches lost Saturday attracted large crowds of specta- tors, but locally the game will not betaken up seriously for another week. A good deal of amusement was extracted from Saturday's encounter on the Belle Vue Athletic Grounds between Mr E H Williams' Merrie Men and a team of picked visitors,—the proceeds of which were devoted to the funds of the Rhyl Football Club. This event has become a hardy annual, and the eelf-sacritising and practical interest in the club thus demonstrated by Mr S H Williams is greatly apprecia- ted. The match was started by the Chairman of the Urban District Council (Mr J W Jones), and a most entertaining game ensued. The tenma were constituted as follows ;—Merrie Men Van (captain), E H Williams, Charlie Drew, Clauie Torulin, Major Hubble, King Sco't, Robb Gilmoie, l'erey Galino, Johnnie Martin, W Roberts, W Mid('-leton. Visitors: Messrs Sidney Ed- wards (Birmingham), ctptrun, Percy Kuowles (Sutton), Ernest Kceler (Birmingham), Leonard Smith (Wolver- hampton), Herbert Stanley (Manchester), William Bed- slows (Birmingham), Walter Wells (Birmingham), Fiehi Chilwell (Bradford), BF Helwood (Birtuirighai-u), Davies (Wolyerhampton), irreerlavm (Oxford). The foregoing encounter was followed by a contest between Rhyl and the Church Guild, in which the former fulfilled expectations by winning easily. The feature of last Saturday's Combination matches was that in the seven games played only two of the home clubs secured both points, the results at a glance being as fojlcwi- Oswestry 1, Crewe Alexandra 0 Whitchurch 3, Nantwich 0 Glossop 1, Port Sunlight U Chirk 4, Birkenhead 0 Bangor 1, Chester 1 Tranmero Rovers 4, Brougliton 3 Middlewich 2, Druids 2 -1" Rhyl's first Combination match this season will be at Broughton, to morrow. The following Satnrdsy they will be at home to Glossop, one of the new comers. There was a Rood rally of football enthusiasts on Wednesday night at the Birmingham Arms, the new headquarters of the Rhyl Football Club. Mr F, Brown .Tones, the late Hecretary, presided, and in dealing with the club's prospects, he said they had a better fixture list this season than ever before, owing to the adoption I by the Combination authorities of the .Fletcher system of arranging the fixtures, whereby a club secures, as far as possible, a. home match every alternate Saturday. That arrangement, he thought, oitqiit to go a long way to stimulate a deeper interest in the doings of the club. They had enrolled about £ 0 players, the hnff ;of whom were of the first flight, so to epeak. TÍJat the club was determined to encourage local tulent was proved by the fact that nearly all the playeis were Illtyliceg. It ought also it) bo a great advantage to the club in having its own representatives on the councils of both the WeUli F. A. :Jd the Combination. The cup matches included bids for the English Cup and the Welsh Senior Cup. In connexion with the former they had choice of ground against Wrexham on 'the 23rd in?t., but in consequence of a good offer from Wrexham they had decided to try their luck away from home. Ti ey were also hoping to augment tho funds of the club by means of a draw, which was being well worked by Messrs .T P 1-joiies and A Prit, ebard. Everything, in short, pointed to a very glloú. season, and it only remained for ouo and all to strive to realise expectations. Mr W J JI» Storey, J.P., High Sheriff of Flintshire, was nominated as president, and the following as vice- presidents—Rev T Jenkins and Messrs J H Ellis, J.P., F L Rawlins, 11 A Tilby, J W Jones, J.P., T E Owens, .1 Pierce Lewis, W G Story, L G Hall, and A A Goodall. The appointment of Mr J P Jones, John Street, as secretary was confirmed, and Mr A Pi-iteliaril wns ejected treasurer, while the committee was constituted as follows—Messrs E Brown Jones (chairman), W Jones, H Hughes, F J H Beech, W Evans, G Evans, W Hughes. C Hubbard, T Robinson, X C Ellis, 'J' A Jones, and T Oritlitbs, with power lo add to their number. Mr was chosen as captain of the team, and Mr R J Jones vice-captain. The team selected to oppose Brooghton at Broughton to-morrow is as follows-Goal, R J Jones; backs, OgilTio and Jack Jones; halves, J Wlutelock, W Roberts, and J W Ellis forwards, D W Jones, Rowland Thomas, J Love Jones, E T Williams, and R Owen.
