Hj^HE COMMITTEE deem it right to place before the Subscribers and Public the following statement relative to the above undertaking: PLANS.—The requisite plans, sections, and other documents, have been lodged with the Clerks of the Peace for the respective counties and divisions through which the Railway will pass. CHARACTER OF THE LINE,—The surveys have fully coniirmed every anticipated advantage of the route selected; for, with ihe exception of a very small proportion of the whole length, the line is practically level presenting in no one instance a steeper rise than five feet per mile. COST J'be Capital of Three Millions will he amply sufficient to complete the works. ROllTE.-The Railway will commence at Gonlston Street, Whitechapel, being about a quarter of a mile from the Koyal Exchange; and will pass through Cambridge, Lincoln, and Gainsborough, to York; having also a branch to Norwich, diverging from the main line at Saffron Walden. and passing through Bury. POPULATION —The aggregate number of inhabitants in the districts through which the line will actually pass, or which will be within its immediate influence, amounts to about Four Millions, or one fourth of the entire population of Great Britain, and of this number Seven Hundred Thousand are inhabitants of the principal cities and towns either upon or near the line of Raii.,ay. R'VE,NUP,Exi)erietice justifiesthe conclusion that existing traffic is doubled by the introduction of a Railway hut without calculating upon this addition, a dividend of 15 per cent. upon the capital may be confidently expected. According to the published rate of calculations, the gross receipts from passengers at present travelling this route alone will amount to £ '526,844. and from other sources to a nearly equal sum. DISTANCE.-The distance by the Railway will be, to Salfron Walden 39 miles; to Cambridge 55 miles; to Lincoln 131 miles; to Gainsborough 147 miles; to York 189 miles; to Bury St. Edmunds 65 miles; and to Norwich 103 miles. TIME OF 'I Iit A%'ELI,l NG.- I'lle time required to traverse these distances upon the Railway will be, to Saffron Walden lj, It tirs -1 to Cambridge 21 hours; to Lincoln 51 hours; to Gainsborough 6 hours; to York 7.} hours to Bury 2i hours; and to Norwich 4 hours In conclusion,it should be observed tbatthis Railway will pass through portions of the Kingdom now most in need of an improved means of transit; and it is a fact worthy of marked consideration that the undertaking will aid rather than injuriously interfere with any Canals, other liailways, or existing interests of iinpor, alice.
