The Monmouthshire Assizes will be held at Mon- mouth, on Wednesday, March 28. "UMONS" USHER THE NEW ACT, -The Mon- mouth Beacon mentions with just pride that it has not yet had all opportunity of recording one instance of persons so far degrading themselves as to be cor- poreally united under the new act for the relief of dissenters, hv the 11 Relieving" Officer of the poor. Long may the sense of feminine purity and holiness in the religious contract of matrimony, which thus distinguishes the amiable sex in Monmouthshire, continue to their liQuour. and may it become an ex- ample to iiieil- country It is understood that the Rev. Hugh Williams, M.A. of Liatidiff, is to succcd to the living of Bassale; and ill this event, the reetorv of Ltallirtli, near Aber- gavenny, and the curacy of Roath, near Cardiff, will be vacated. The neighbourhood of Castletown have been thrown into by the very sudden and awful death of the landlat v of the Coach and Horses Inn, which will be elucidated by the Coroner's inquest. The Duke of Beaufort left town yesterday for Bad- minton, where his Grace and famiiy are expected to sojourn untill the beginning of April. The now writ moved by Mr Holmes, for Bridge- north, was m the room of Henry Hanbury Tracv, Esq.* who has accepted the stewardship of the Cniltcrn Hundreds. TREnRq.^R, 22nd February, lS3S.-Yester(liy the Petty psSIOlls for the parish of Bedwelltv, &c., held at the Rock Inn, before Samuclllomfrav and Joseph Davies, Esqrs.—J;unes Goold, a native of Sainer- setshire, was brought upon suspicion of steal- ing i4 10s. the property of Thomas Richards, in the J redegar Iron Works, on the 13th inst. On his exam 1 nation such a catalogue of falsehoods was stated by himself and his reputed wife, ns to tue manner in which they became possessed of the money that the court was kept in a continued roitr of laughter. The woman persisting she had been married five months at Bristol, but in what part, cr in which church, she could not tell, nor yet the month. The man stated he was married since the new year, tuat he and his beloved wife came to Bristol, Oil their way tQ Pontypool, in search of work; he had know ha fair partner twelve years, and on entering Bristol, for the first time, on a Tuesday morning, they saw a church open and vyallced in, when the clergyman, most condespendingly united them for the sum of 10 shillings. They wero not required to sign any ^aak, nor hswLthey any certificate given them; they did not know what banns meant' This happy pair were, however, divided by the magistrates committing the bridegroom,to the house of correction, for three months' hard labour, the circumstantial evidence not being sufficient to prove the theft. Thomas Mastefis, a notorious Sunday gambler was convicted fur playing; at pitch and toss during Divine Sen ice, and by way of example to the numerous junior delinquents (lie being a married man ') was committed to two months' It,-ird labour, Mary James, wife of Evali James, was summoned for illegally taking away a mare, the property of Mary James, widow, of Lower Ebbw Vale; it being a fiiiiily affair, the Magistrates humanely ar- ranged the transaction to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. Isaac Thomas, H. Harris, and Evan Lewis, be- longing to the ''Speedwell'' locomotive engine of the Tredcgar Iron Works, were summoned for driving against a mare, the property of William Jones, and breaking her foro legs. It having been proved that tho engineers were going at a very slow rate, and admitted by the plaintiff to be clearly accidental, the men having borne excellent characters for many years in the employ of theTre- degar Company. Samuel Homfray, Esq. regretted the occurrence, and paid the poor man Jones 3?1'2, the value of the mare, hoping, at the same time, that it would stimulate all others in his employ, to use cau- tion in future, and appreciate the value of a good character. This act of unlooked for liberality called forth the warmest approbation from all present. There were many other cases, which the magistrates allowed to be arranged, being of no public im portance. n'e are happy to state that the litigation so long pending between the parish of Bedwellty and the Messrs Harford, was this day amicably settled at the TownHafofTredegar. A vote of thanks was then passed to Edmund Williams, Esq., magistrate, for his able and efficient conduct as chairman of the meet- ing. Samuel Homfray, Esq., having been unavoid- ably called away to Newport, was uot present on tLis occasiou,
