COTTAGE GARDENS.-No. II.
COTTAGE GARDENS.-No. II. (From the Gardeners' Chronicle.) During the winter little can be done by the cot- tager, but the season is now approaching when every spare hour may be advantageously employed. In the ensuing week if the ground is tolerably dry and tit for working, a small portion should be dug for a sowing of Early Frame Peas, and another for Mazagan Heuns. For the former drills are to be made about three or four inches wide, and 1 he same deplh, three teet apart.into which the pease are to be laid as regular^ as possible from one end of the drill to the o>her, but not crowded, and then covered neatly. Beans may have similar drills made for them, but, instead of being sown like pease, they are to he dropped three inches distant from one another in the row. The space for beans should be about halt the size of the one allotted for pease. As these are the principal crops which require to be attended to this week, perhaps we cannot do better than avail ourselves of this opportunity to give a selection of the fruits which are considejed by Mr Thompson, of the London Horticultural Society's Garden, to be most deserving of general cultivation; and we would at the same time submit for the consideration of local horticultural societies, whether it would not be worth while to offer them as prizes for cottagers, and to authorise their secre- taries in the autumn to procure plants of theseveral kinds from those nurseries where theyare likely to be obtained true to their names. Apples.—Where the soil and situation arefavour- able for the Apple, and where the space will admit of onlyfour trees, the best arc, the VVormsley Pip pin, King of the Pippins, Ribston Pippin, and Dutch Mignonne; where six, the same kinds, with the addition of the Allreston and Old Nonpareil; where eipht, the -Wormsley Pippin, King of the Pippins, Ribston Pippin, Bedlordshire Foundling, Oourtpendu plat, Alfreston, Brabant Bellefleur, and Scarlet Nonpareil; where ten, the same sorts wilh the addition of the Downton Nonpareil and Pennington's Seedling. Pears.-Nilarie Louise. Beurre de Capiaumoni, Beiirr6 Diel, Gl out i\lorceau, Easter Beurré, and Beurre Rance. It would be difficult to select fewer sorts than these. They are all of first rale excel- lence, and hardy enough for standards. Several sorts may be grafted on the same tree where the space will not admit of one of each being planted- Plums-The best are the Green gage, Washing- ton, Coe's Golden Drop, and Early Orleans. Cherries,— May Dnke, Laie Duke, and Morel Io. These may either be trained against a cottage wall, or any outbuilding; and where this cannot be done, they may be grown as standards. The Pluins may also be treated in the same way. C-oosebei-i-ie.v.-Of this fruit the variety is almost endless, but the following may be stated as the very best sorts for general cultivation Red Cham- pagne, and Red Warrington Yellow Champagne, and Early Sulphur; Pitinaston Gi-eeri gage, Nlassey's Heart of Oak. and Early Green Hairy Woodward'* VVhi estniih, Taylor's bright Venus, and Crystal. Raspberries. —Red Antwerp, Double bearing Hed, and Yellow Antwerp. Curron(s.-Red Dutch. Knight, Sweet Red, White Dutch, and Black Naples. The laiter is far superior to the common Blaok, which it is fast superseding everywhere. Strauibfrries -Thee are as variable as Goose- herries, but the following kinds are most to be depended on:-C-toveetid Scarlet, Old Pine, and the Red and White Alpine. 'I o those benevolent individuals, or Horticul- tural Societies, who may be desirous of aiding the industrious cottager, the preceding lists will be fflund very useful. I'Iiey inay be (,oiifideiitly relied on as by far the best selections that have ever been made for the cottager.

ON THE CULTURE OF THE OXALIS DEPPKI AS A CULINARY PLANT.—The uses of the Oxalis are many. The YOllnng leales are dressed like sorrel, in so,,por as a v(.getable; tl)ey have a fresh and agreeable acid, especially in spring. The flowers are excellent in salad, alone, ormixed with corn salad, endive of both kinds, red cabbage, beet root, and even with the petals of the Dahlia, which are delicious when thus employed. When served at table, the flowers with their pink coiolla, green calyx, yellow stripes, and little stamens, produce a very pretty effect. The roots are taken tip in September or October, and preserved through winter in a cool cellar. They are genily boiled itli salt and water, after having been and slightly peeled they are then eaten like a^paragos, in the Flemish fashion, uiih melted butter and the yolk of eggs. They are also served up like Scorz- onera and endive, with while sauce. They form, in whatever way they are dressed, a tender, succulent dish, easy to digest, agreeing with the most delicate stomach. TheanaioayottherootwithSatepindi- cates tllat its effect should be excellent upon all constitutions. — Ch. Mort en, Prof. Bot., Lieae, Dec. 18, 1840. PAIns FLOWER INIARKET.-I" ev persons in England have any idea of ihe vasl number of flowers which are daily exposed for sale in the maikels of Paris. Almost the whole of the fio ists in or near the city are engaged in this branch o! ihe trade. The principal market is held tinder a double avenue of trees, on the Quai anx Fleurs; and here are assembled in the open air, both in summer and winter, more than 400 florists, who find a ready sale for their produce at about the jverage price of eight sous. The extent of this trade may seem strange to those unaccustomed to the manners of the French. It is lie custom with all class-s to make presents to their friends on their birth day. or the lete of their patron saint. and among other things plants and flowers are always given; this necessarily causes a large demand; a" ball marche" is, however, everything GiJrdeuen' Chronicle. MKMCAL PROPERTIES OF THE BI.VCH—A cor respondent reminds us that the account givPII at 37 <>f tb<* iiiuretic effects of this plant is con Hi liii'd Dy tlif following quotation • In sumo places these trees ((he birches) arc tapped in the spring, and the sap drawn out to make birch wine, which has been recommended for stone and gravel, as is also the sap unferinented," —MilUr's Dictionary. He says with great reason, that it is a pity modern writers should have altogether forced old Miller out of the way; surely there is more good sense and information in his hook than in many modern works upon gardening matters; in which we agree with iii iD. -Gardeners' Chronicle. ANTS REMOVED BY Cp,tpHoR -Itt Arabia there are many kinds ol ants; most of them ar» as harin- less as our own, excepting two species, one of which becomes troublesome by the voracity with which it attacks victuals, unless driven away by ihe odour of camphor Tti bite of the other is little less paiuful than that of the scorpion, or less fatal in its eiTt-cts.- I Niebuhr's Travels. A COCKNEY SPORTSMAN.- t)urit)g the late severe frost, a dashing youllg blood of this city bethought himself he would spend a day in sporting. Accord- ingly, he equipped himself in a bang up velveteen jacket, with the figure of a dog on every button, and having capacious pockets on tne outside, lutooneof these was duly stowed the requisite proportion of shot, al)(i ill that on the contrary side, a quarter pound of powder. His borrowed gun was taken on his shoulder; but as, like other sparks, he never considers himself completely fitted out without his cigar, one ot the largest and best of this description wasstu'ekon one side of his month, and ihus equipped, and with something heller than the figure of a dog at his heels, he gaily sallied forth. As being a path on which lie was more likely to see and be seen than many others, he bent his way towards Alphington, but had not gone far when lo! a blackbird appeared in sight. this was luck beyond expectation, and he hastened to have a pwp. at what he already considered his prize. As he could not. however, shoot with a Havannah in his mouih, the twisted and Iragrant, and now fierv leaf, was plinked into the I• 11 pocket, and the guu duly fixed at the shoulder, when, in the twinkling ol au eye, without atlording time for anything like deli- berate aim, a loud explosion followed, not Irom th< fowling piece —which, with its master, fell heavily to the groutid-but from our hero's pocket, the lighted cigar having come in contact with the powder, and with a scald, or rather hum, of 110 ordillllry kind, literalh blown this cockney sportsman ul). CORN TRADE. ..
CORN TRADE. The wheat market during the past week was devoid of any particular activity, although, under the influence of an exceedingly moderate supply of English, and the transactions amongst town and country inillers were itiostly itiomediate wants. The indifferent condition of many of the samples reu- necessary to SiltTmil to a decline in prices, but .notwithstanding the slow demand experienced for English g tid Foreign Wheat, no disposition was evinced to take less money for ivally^fiiie qualHies. Foreign wheat his met with a liutt'-d inquiry only late, pat ticulai ly amoufjst country «STefs," but the interruption to the trade by the frost, and inundation subsequently in some measure account for this. Very litile re- duciion has occurred in the value of fine Damzic qualities, but for the ordinary and second inte samples, it has been necessary to give way in prices from Is to 2s per quarter. The supplies of malting barley are much iucreasing, and in conse- quence of the reduced rates at which malt was at present selling, there is by no means a livel, demand amongst the maltsters. The country itiar- kets also being so well stocked with this graii» enables many of our large buyers to suit theru- selves better at home. A very consicierable pro portion of the recent supply in Mark Lane slili remains undisposed of, and prices have evidently a downward tendency. A very good inquiry ex- ists for stout parcels of English and Foreign for grinding, but the quantity offering is small, and prices seem rather disposed to improve. English beans, old ai^d new, have lately appeared in large- quantities, but there is not any material reduction: in prices. The demand, though far from lively, still enables a tolerable clearance of the fresh supplies to be made. There are several cargoes of Foreign beans recenHy oni-ed (upon which duty has been paid), offering for sa'e, but the qualify being so much itifet-ior to the English, they do not excite much attention. Hog pease are beginning; to improve in value, and sales are at present I quick, but the importations of Foreign white pease have been so extensive that 110 improvement has yet occurred in them. The present duty, how- ever, being high will no doubt prevent further importations. The supplies of Irish oats, which three weeks "hee were exceedingly liberal, are beginning to tall off, and by far die largest pro- portioll of the samples now at market are quite of second and third rate quality. A few Yorkshire and Lincolnshire cargoes have lately been received but Irom Scotland tbe arrivals continue scanty, and principally Angus Feed We are in daily exnecta- tioll of fu. ther supplit's from this quarter, hut caleu- late upon a good demand when they do arrive. The town hping likely to fill at the present period (the meeting of Parliament) will no doubt cause a g.-eaily increased consumption o( this as well as other [anic es of grain, and ihe fine parcels of oa:s that are at present to be met w ith readily obtain advanced rates. The increasing arrivals of malt have occa- sioned a very slow sale, and many of the samples being inferior ill quality, are difficult of disposal, thoug-I. ottered at reduced prices. The fiour trade for some time past has been very animated, but there is not quite so much doing at present, and a slight reduction in the prices of ship marks has occurred. -Juhn Bull.
